Kitco (Canada) review: is it a good place to buy gold?
Kitco is a long-running Montreal dealer that sells and buys gold in Canadian dollars and publishes its buy prices openly. It requires a CA$5,000 minimum on physical bullion. On 12 October 2026 its 1 oz Maple Leaf cost 5.70% over spot by wire, more than two Toronto-area dealers. It suits larger buyers who value storage and two-way pricing.
Many Canadians know Kitco first as the gold price chart they check on their phone. Behind the charts is a Montreal bullion dealer that has been trading since 1977. This review looks at Kitco from a Canadian buyer's point of view: prices in Canadian dollars, how you can pay from a Canadian bank, what selling back looks like, and where the currency conversion quietly costs you money. Our US readers should read the separate Kitco review for US buyers, because the payment options, taxes and prices differ.

How does Kitco score on our checks?

How much does Kitco charge in Canadian dollars?
A dealer's price is the spot price (the live market price of one troy ounce of gold) plus a premium. Kitco shows the premium indirectly: each product page lists a wire or cheque price and a higher card or PayPal price. We captured Kitco's Canadian-dollar prices automatically and compared them with three other Canadian sellers.
| Seller and product | Checked | Wire or cheque | Over spot | Card | Over spot |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Gold Stock Canada: random year | 11 Oct | CA$6,079.19 | 1.68% | CA$6,307.16 | 5.49% |
| Canadian PMX: 2026 | 11 Oct | CA$6,167.69 | 3.16% | CA$6,414.40 | 7.29% |
| TD Precious Metals: 2026 (paid from a TD account) | 12 Oct | CA$6,191.98 | 3.82% | n/a | n/a |
| Kitco: 2026, MintFirst (current year, uncirculated) | 12 Oct | CA$6,294.14 | 5.70% | CA$6,556.40 | 10.10% |
GoldVetted automated price checks. Kitco captured 12 October 2026 at 08:39 UTC, spot CA$5,954.73/oz; TD at 06:32 UTC, spot CA$5,964.19; Gold Stock Canada and Canadian PMX on 11 October at 12:05 UTC, spot CA$5,978.73. Spot from gold-api.com. Premium = price / spot - 1. Kitco's random-year 1 oz Maple Leaf was out of stock at our check; its random-year Gold Eagle was CA$6,301.40 by wire (5.82%). More in the October 2026 Canada premium report.
On one coin, Kitco's wire price was CA$214.95 more than Gold Stock Canada's. Some of that gap is product: Kitco's MintFirst line is current-year coins straight from the Mint, while Gold Stock Canada's cheapest option was random year. Even so, if you only want the gold, Kitco was not the low-cost choice in this check.
The Canadian-dollar gap
Kitco prices everything in US dollars and Canadian dollars, and the two do not line up exactly with the market exchange rate. Within three minutes on 12 October, its random-year Gold Eagle cost US$4,340.40 and CA$6,301.40 by wire. That implies about 1.452 Canadian dollars per US dollar, while our spot feed's rate was 1.4256. So buying in CAD cost about 1.8% more than the US price converted at market. On the selling side the gap runs the other way: Kitco's CAD bid for a Maple Leaf implied a rate of about 1.408, around 1.2% below market, as our guide to selling gold in Canada found the same morning. Every dealer builds a currency margin into its prices; Kitco's is simply easy to see because it publishes both. If you already hold US dollars, compare the two before you order.
Paying from a Canadian bank
Kitco's payment options are one of its strengths for Canadians. Payment is due within three business days of your order.
| Method | Limit for first order | Hold before shipping | 4% discount? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Online bill payment (CAD) | No stated limit | None | Yes |
| Bank wire | No stated limit | None | Yes |
| Bank draft or certified cheque | $25,000 | 3 business days | Yes |
| Personal cheque | $25,000 | 5 business days | Yes |
| Interac e-Transfer | $10,000 | None | Not listed |
| Visa, Mastercard or PayPal | $10,000 | None (may need verification) | No |
Online bill payment works from BMO, CIBC, RBC, National Bank, Scotiabank, TD, Simplii Financial, Laurentian Bank, Desjardins, Tangerine and Manulife: add "Kitco Metals" as a payee and use your Kitco account number as the reference. Kitco does not accept third-party payments; the name on the payment must match your account.
Online bill payment is the quiet winner here: no limit stated, no hold, and it earns the 4% discount. On a CA$6,000 coin, paying that way instead of by card saves about CA$260.
Shipping, insurance and pick-up in Canada
Standard shipping costs $15, or nothing on orders of $5,000 or more, which in practice means every physical bullion order because of the minimum. Insurance is charged separately at 0.65% of the metal value, so a CA$6,300 coin adds about CA$41. Kitco says parcels take 2 to 5 business days, occasionally 10 to 15 by Canada Post, and every parcel needs a signature. If you live near Montreal, you can collect from the counter free of charge when the item is in stock; our Montreal gold buying guide covers other local options. Problems with a delivery must be reported within 48 hours, and returns or exchange requests within three business days.
GST/HST on what you buy
Canada exempts gold bars and government coins of at least 99.5% purity from GST/HST, treating them as financial instruments under the Excise Tax Act (CRA Memorandum 17-1). Maple Leafs and .9999 bars qualify. Kitco also sells 22 karat Eagles and Krugerrands, which are 91.67% gold and fall outside that rule, so expect tax on them. Our Canadian gold tax guide explains the 99.5% test in full.
Selling gold back to Kitco
Kitco is one of the few dealers in Canada that shows its buy prices to anyone, without an account. We captured its Canadian-dollar bids on Thanksgiving Monday, 12 October 2026:
| Item (1 oz of gold each) | Kitco pays | vs spot |
|---|---|---|
| Gold Maple Leaf, .9999 | CA$5,846.66 | -2.06% |
| American Buffalo | CA$5,817.28 | -2.55% |
| American Gold Eagle | CA$5,758.51 | -3.53% |
| Royal Canadian Mint 1 oz bar (latest design) | CA$5,729.13 | -4.03% |
| Older Maple Leaf, .999 (1979 to 1982) | CA$5,582.23 | -6.49% |
GoldVetted automated capture of Kitco's "Sell to Kitco" page in CAD. An hour later, at 08:39 UTC, the Maple Leaf bid was CA$5,838.36 as spot eased.
The process: choose your items on the sell page, create a packing slip, print two copies and ship. A price confirmed on the slip is guaranteed if the parcel is postmarked within one business day and reaches Kitco within 10 business days. Kitco-assisted shipping costs a flat $35 plus $6.50 per $1,000 of insurance, and both can come out of your payout. The minimum is CA$5,000 for physical metal, and Kitco buys jewellery and other scrap only from businesses such as jewellers and pawn shops, not from individuals. For selling a single coin or a chain, a local buyer is the better fit; our Canadian selling guide compares them.
The round trip. At 08:39 UTC on 12 October, Kitco sold a 2026 Maple Leaf for CA$6,294.14 by wire and bid CA$5,838.36 for a Maple Leaf. Buying and immediately selling would have cost CA$455.78, or 7.2%, before shipping and insurance. That is the spread you need gold to rise by just to break even.
Storage, Kitco Pool and RRSPs
Kitco offers three ways to hold gold without keeping it at home, and they work very differently:
- Kitco Allocated Storage: your own bars or coins, kept separate and recorded as your property, in Canadian vaults that Kitco says include the Royal Canadian Mint, or in Hong Kong or a COMEX-approved US depository. Fees are by quote.
- Kitco Pool: an unallocated metal account. You own a claim on metal held for Kitco's clients in depositories and refiners, not specific bars. No minimum, no shipping, but you rely on Kitco.
- VaultChain: a digital product that Kitco says represents gold held physically at the Royal Canadian Mint, tracked on a blockchain ledger.
For registered accounts, Kitco says it refers clients to partner custodians to hold precious metals in an RSP, and tells them to read the CRA's rules. Our guide to gold in an RRSP or TFSA explains what qualifies.
What do customers say?
We do not invent ratings. These are the scores shown on independent sites when we checked on 12 October 2026:
| Site | Score shown | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot (online.kitco.com) | 4.3 out of 5 | 7,306 reviews |
| Shopper Approved | 4.7 out of 5 | 10,753 reviews |
| Better Business Bureau | A+ rating | Shown for both the Montreal and Rouses Point, New York listings in BBB search; the full profile blocked our automated visit |
Recent Trustpilot reviews praise packaging and phone service. The criticisms that recur are about time: settlement on sales and delivery taking longer than expected. Build that into your plans if you need the money or the metal by a certain date.

Good fit: Canadians buying CA$5,000 or more at a time who want to pay from their bank without a wire, see a published buy price before they commit, or store metal in Canada instead of at home.
Look elsewhere if: you want a single coin or a small bar, you want the lowest premium on a Maple Leaf, or you want to sell jewellery.

Frequently asked questions
Is Kitco a Canadian company?
Yes. Kitco Metals Inc. is based at 620 Cathcart in downtown Montreal, where it also runs a walk-in counter. Its corporate site says it began in 1977 as a scrap precious metals business started on a $700 loan, and it opened a Hong Kong office in 2007. It also has a US mailing address in Rouses Point, New York.
What is Kitco's minimum order in Canada?
CA$5,000 for physical bullion, whether you order online, by phone or at the Montreal counter, according to Kitco's How to Buy FAQ. The same CA$5,000 minimum applies when you sell physical bullion to Kitco. Kitco Pool metal accounts and its Cool and Collectible range have no minimum.
Can I pay Kitco by Interac e-Transfer?
Yes. Kitco accepts Interac e-Transfer in Canadian dollars up to CA$10,000 for first-time buyers, with auto-deposit. It also takes online bill payment from 11 Canadian banks, including RBC, TD, BMO, CIBC, Scotiabank, National Bank and Desjardins, with no stated limit. Bill payment, wire and cheque all qualify for Kitco's 4% discount; Interac is not on the discount list.
Does Kitco charge GST or HST on gold?
Pure gold bars and government coins of at least 99.5% fineness, such as Maple Leafs, are exempt from GST/HST in Canada. Coins below that fineness, such as 22 karat Gold Eagles and Krugerrands, are generally taxable. Check the tax line at checkout. Our Canadian gold tax guide explains the rule.
Is Kitco cheaper than other Canadian dealers?
Not on the coin we checked. Kitco's 2026 1 oz Maple Leaf was CA$6,294.14, 5.70% over spot, by wire on 12 October 2026. Gold Stock Canada sold a random-year Maple Leaf at 1.68% and Canadian PMX a 2026 Maple Leaf at 3.16% on 11 October. Kitco's strengths are its published bids and its storage options.
How does Kitco pay when I sell gold to it?
You create a packing slip online or call, ship the metal, and Kitco pays once it receives and checks it. A price confirmed on the slip is guaranteed if your parcel is postmarked within one business day and arrives within 10 business days. Kitco-assisted shipping costs a flat $35 plus $6.50 per $1,000 of insurance, deductible from your payout.
Should I trade with Kitco in Canadian or US dollars?
If you have a US-dollar account, compare both. On 12 October 2026, Kitco's CAD prices implied an exchange rate about 1.8% above the market rate when buying and about 1.2% below it when selling. Converting your own dollars at a better rate can beat that, but only if your bank's conversion costs less.
