What is an ounce, gram or kilo of gold worth in CAD?

Canadian dealers mostly sell by the troy ounce, but bars are also sold in grams and kilos, and the Royal Canadian Mint makes gram-sized bars as well as coins. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, so it is heavier than the ounce on a kitchen scale. Many Canadians also hold the 1 oz Maple Leaf, which weighs 31.11 g.

How much is 10k, 14k and 18k gold worth in Canada?

Canadian jewellery is usually stamped 10K, 14K or 18K. Under the federal Precious Metals Marking Regulations, a gold quality mark can be applied only to gold of at least 9 karats, and the real gold content may fall short of the stamp by no more than 3 parts per thousand (7 where solder is used). So a 14K ring really is close to 58.3% gold. Melt value is the live price times the purity.

What are a Gold Maple Leaf and Canadian gold bars worth?

The Royal Canadian Mint, a federal Crown corporation, makes the Gold Maple Leaf in 99.99% pure gold. The 1 oz coin weighs 31.11 g, measures 30 mm and carries a $50 face value. Its security features include machined radial lines, a micro-engraved maple leaf with the last two digits of the year at its centre, and the Mint's Bullion DNA authentication for coins dated 2014 and later (Royal Canadian Mint). Because it is nearly pure, a 1 oz coin holds a full ounce of gold.

How much over spot do Canadian dealers charge for a Maple Leaf?

Spot is the starting point; the extra a dealer adds is the premium. We read single-coin prices for a 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf on two Canadian dealer sites on 11 October 2026, when spot was CA$5,978.73 an ounce. Both dealers price lower for a bank wire than for a credit card, and the difference is large.

Gold Stock Canada, 1 oz Maple LeafCA$6,079.191.68%CA$6,307.165.49%
Canadian PMX, 2026 1 oz Maple LeafCA$6,167.693.16%CA$6,414.407.29%

GoldVetted automated price check, 11 October 2026. Premium = price divided by spot, minus one. Canadian PMX's price is for a current-year (2026) coin; current-year coins often cost a little more than mixed years. No GST/HST applies to either, as both are 99.99% gold.

Three things stand out. Paying by wire instead of card saved CA$227.97 at Gold Stock Canada and CA$246.71 at Canadian PMX on a single coin. The cheapest wire price was CA$88.50 below the dearer one. And even the best price needs gold to rise before you could sell at a profit, because dealers buy back below spot. Banks and big-box stores also sell gold in Canada, usually at different premiums; our guides to buying gold from Canadian banks and Costco gold cover those, and the guide to buying gold in Canada compares every option.

Do I pay GST or HST on gold in Canada?

On qualifying bullion, no. The Excise Tax Act defines "precious metal" as a bar, ingot, coin or wafer of gold refined to at least 99.5% purity. Selling it counts as a financial service, which is exempt from GST/HST, and a refiner's own sale is zero-rated. Either way, you pay no sales tax on a Maple Leaf or a standard bar. This rule is stricter than in the UK or US: 22K coins such as Krugerrands and American Gold Eagles fall below 99.5%, so GST/HST applies to them in Canada, as it does to jewellery.

ItemPurityGST/HST charged?

Standard gold bar or wafer99.5% or moreNo
Krugerrand, American Gold Eagle, Sovereign91.67% (22K)Yes
Gold jewelleryUsually 10K to 18KYes

When you sell gold at a profit, half the capital gain is added to your taxable income: the government cancelled the planned rise in the inclusion rate in March 2025, so the 50% rate still applies. Frequent trading can instead be treated as business income. Our Canada gold tax guide goes through it, and you can read about holding gold in an RRSP or TFSA.

Why does the gold price in Canadian dollars change when the US price does not?

Three things move the Canadian dollar price at once.

  • The global gold price. Driven by interest rate expectations, central bank buying and investor fear.
  • The US dollar. A stronger US dollar usually weighs on gold.
  • The USD/CAD exchange rate. The Canadian dollar is sensitive to oil and trade news. If it drops against the US dollar, gold rises in CAD terms.

This means a Canadian buyer can see gold rise in CAD on a day when the US dollar price is flat, simply because the loonie fell. The market is closed over the weekend, so the Saturday and Sunday figure is Friday's close. See the gold price history in CAD.

When is the gold market open in Canada?

Canada has no gold benchmark of its own. Canadian prices are the global price, set by the LBMA Gold Price auction in London (run by ICE Benchmark Administration) and by COMEX futures trading in New York, converted into Canadian dollars. Because Toronto shares New York's clock, the busiest hours for gold fall in the Canadian morning.

How should I use the price when buying or selling?

  1. Find the live melt value of what you hold or plan to buy.
  2. Ask the dealer for the all-in price, including shipping and payment fees.
  3. Divide that by the melt value and subtract one, to see the premium.
  4. Before buying, ask for the buy-back price as a share of spot.

This is information, not advice. Gold can fall in value as well as rise, and premiums and fees change daily.

Frequently asked questions

What is the price of gold in Canada today?

The live price is at the top of this page in Canadian dollars per troy ounce, with its update time. It is the spot price, the wholesale price. When you buy a Maple Leaf from a Canadian dealer you pay more: on 11 October 2026 we found 1.68% to 3.16% over spot by wire transfer, and 5.49% to 7.29% by card.

How much is a gram of gold worth in Canadian dollars?

Take the ounce price and divide by 31.1035, because a troy ounce holds that many grams. The table on this page shows the live per-gram price for pure gold. Jewellery is worth less per gram: 10K is 41.7% gold, 14K is 58.3% and 18K is 75%. Canada's marking rules allow gold quality marks from 9K up.

Do I pay GST or HST on gold in Canada?

Not on bullion that qualifies. The Excise Tax Act defines precious metal as a bar, ingot, coin or wafer of gold refined to at least 99.5% purity. A dealer's sale of it is a GST/HST-exempt financial service (a refiner's sale is zero-rated), so you pay no sales tax. Jewellery and 22K coins such as Krugerrands and American Eagles do not meet the test and are taxable.

Why does the gold price in CAD move when the US price does not?

Gold is priced in US dollars worldwide and converted into Canadian dollars at the current exchange rate. If the Canadian dollar weakens against the US dollar, gold costs more in Canadian dollars even if the US price is steady. If the loonie strengthens, the opposite happens.

How is a gain on gold taxed in Canada?

A profit on selling gold is generally a capital gain, and half of the gain is added to your taxable income. Whether the gains are treated as business income instead depends on how often and why you trade. The CRA guidance covers both cases, so ask an accountant if you are unsure.

What is a Gold Maple Leaf worth?

The 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf is 99.99% pure, weighs 31.11 g and has a $50 face value, according to the Royal Canadian Mint. Its gold is worth the live ounce price, shown in the coin table. Dealers sell it above that: in our 11 October 2026 check the cheapest was CA$6,079.19 by wire, 1.68% over spot.

What time does the gold price update in Canada?

Live prices move almost around the clock on weekdays, from Sunday 6:00 p.m. to Friday 5:00 p.m. Eastern time. The London benchmark auctions are at 5:30 a.m. and 10:00 a.m. Eastern (2:30 a.m. and 7:00 a.m. Pacific) for most of the year. On weekends the market is closed, so the price shown is Friday's close.
