Where to buy gold in Australia: dealers compared on price
Australia's lowest gold premiums are close together. On 11 October 2026, a 1oz Perth Mint cast bar cost 2.86% over spot direct from The Perth Mint, and a 1oz Perth Mint Swan minted bar cost 2.87% at Ainslie Bullion. Investment gold of 99.5% purity or more carries no GST.
Buying gold in Australia at a glance
- Tight premiums. Six 1oz gold prices we captured ranged from 2.86% to 4.80% above spot.
- The mint is not always cheapest. The Perth Mint's own Swan minted bar cost A$29.15 more than the same bar at Ainslie Bullion.
- No GST on investment gold of at least 99.5% fineness in bar, wafer or coin form (ATO ruling GSTR 2003/10).
- 50% CGT discount for resident individuals who own the gold for at least 12 months before selling (ATO).
What do Australian dealers charge for 1oz of gold? Our price check
Every gold price has two parts. The spot price is the wholesale value of one troy ounce of pure gold. The premium is what you pay on top for making, handling and the dealer's margin. We captured the single-unit price of popular 1oz products on each seller's own product page and worked out the premium.
| Seller | Product | Price | Premium over spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| The Perth Mint | Perth Mint 1oz cast bar | A$6,184.39 | 2.86% |
| Ainslie Bullion | Perth Mint Swan 1oz minted bar | A$6,185.24 | 2.87% |
| Jaggards | Perth Mint Swan 1oz minted bar (bank transfer or cash) | A$6,193.19 | 3.00% |
| The Perth Mint | Perth Mint Swan 1oz minted bar | A$6,214.39 | 3.35% |
| Ainslie Bullion | 1oz Gold Kangaroo, various years (mostly buybacks) | A$6,240.24 | 3.78% |
| Jaggards | Perth Mint Swan 1oz minted bar (standard price) | A$6,301.57 | 4.80% |
How we checked: prices were captured automatically from each product page on Sunday 11 October 2026, The Perth Mint at 10:47 UTC and Ainslie Bullion and Jaggards at about 16:08 UTC. The gold market was closed all day, and spot from gold-api.com was A$6,012.71 at both times. Each product holds one troy ounce of 99.99% gold, so premium = price / spot - 1. Jaggards' Swan bar was on backorder (delivery in one to two weeks) when we checked. ABC Bullion's site does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a premium for it. This check repeats monthly; see the Australia gold premium report and the premium tracker.
What this means for you: the Swan minted bar is the fairest like-for-like test, because three sellers offered the identical bar. Ainslie charged A$6,185.24, Jaggards A$6,193.19 by bank transfer, and The Perth Mint A$6,214.39. On one bar that is a A$29.15 spread, small next to the A$108.38 Jaggards adds if you do not pay by bank transfer or cash. Check the gold price today in AUD before you buy.

How is gold taxed in Australia?
Two taxes matter: GST when you buy, and capital gains tax (CGT) when you sell at a profit.
| What you buy | GST when buying | CGT when selling at a profit |
|---|---|---|
| Bars, wafers and coins of 99.5%+ fineness (Kangaroo, Swan bars, Maple Leaf) | None: input taxed precious metal | Taxable gain, halved if owned 12+ months |
| 22 carat coins (Sovereign, Krugerrand, Gold Eagle) | 10% may apply: below 99.5% fineness | Taxable gain, halved if owned 12+ months |
| Gold jewellery | 10% included in the price | Special collectables rules can apply |
| Gold held in an SMSF | As above | Fund tax rules apply; see gold in an SMSF |
Why investment gold has no GST. ATO ruling GSTR 2003/10 explains that gold counts as a "precious metal" only if it is at least 99.5% fine and in an investment form: a bar, wafer or coin that can be traded on the international bullion market, carries an accepted mark and is priced mainly by its metal content. The first sale after refining can be GST-free, and later sales by dealers are input taxed. "Input taxed" means the dealer charges you no GST but cannot claim back GST on its own costs. For you, the result is the same: no GST on the price.
The 22 carat catch. A Sovereign or Krugerrand contains real gold, but at 91.67% it falls below the 99.5% line, so a GST-registered seller adds 10%. Australian buyers who care about cost usually choose 24 carat (99.99%) products such as the Kangaroo or a Perth Mint bar.
Capital gains. The ATO says resident individuals get a 50% CGT discount if they owned the asset for at least 12 months; neither the purchase date nor the sale date counts towards that period. Example: buy a 1oz bar for A$6,200, sell it 18 months later for A$7,200, and A$500 of the A$1,000 gain goes on your return. Our Australian gold tax guide covers record keeping and losses.
Which coins and bars suit Australian buyers?
The Gold Kangaroo from The Perth Mint is Australia's best-known bullion coin: one troy ounce of 99.99% gold and legal tender in Australia. Bars from The Perth Mint, ABC Bullion and international refiners are also common, and 1oz bars often cost less than coins, as our table shows.
| Product | Fineness | GST | In our check |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1oz cast bar | 99.99% | None | 2.86% (The Perth Mint) |
| 1oz minted bar (Perth Mint Swan) | 99.99% | None | 2.87% to 4.80%, by seller and payment |
| 1oz Gold Kangaroo | 99.99% | None | 3.78% (Ainslie, various years) |
| Krugerrand | 91.67% (22 carat) | 10% may apply | Not checked |
Bigger bars, such as 10oz or 1kg, usually carry a lower premium per ounce, but they are harder to sell in part. See our gold bar sizes guide, best gold coins for beginners and the full walkthrough on how to buy gold.
Where should you store gold in Australia?
A home safe is free to run, but many contents policies cap cover for bullion, so ask your insurer. A bank safe deposit box is an option where your bank still offers them, but contents are generally not insured by the bank. A vault costs money but deals with security and insurance: The Perth Mint runs depository accounts, and Ainslie and Jaggards list storage or vaulting services. Our gold storage guide compares the options.
How do you sell gold in Australia?
A dealer's buy-back price is lower than its selling price. That gap is the spread, and with premiums near 3% you need the gold price to rise before a quick sale breaks even. Ainslie and Jaggards both list buy-back services, and Jaggards publishes buy-back prices on its site. We did not capture buy-back prices in this check, so we do not quote any. Get more than one offer and keep your invoice for CGT. Our guide to where to sell gold in Australia compares dealers, and local guides cover Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane, Perth, Adelaide, Gold Coast, Canberra and Hobart.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the cheapest place to buy gold in Australia?
In our check on 11 October 2026, the lowest single-unit premiums on a 1oz bar were almost level: 2.86% for a Perth Mint cast bar bought from The Perth Mint and 2.87% for a Perth Mint Swan minted bar at Ainslie Bullion. The same Swan bar cost 3.35% over spot direct from The Perth Mint. Prices change daily, so compare on the day.
Do you pay GST on gold in Australia?
Not on investment gold. Under the GST law, gold of at least 99.5% fineness in an investment form, such as a bar, wafer or coin, is a precious metal, and dealers' sales of it are input taxed, so no GST is added. Jewellery and 22 carat coins do not qualify. See our Australian gold tax guide.
How is a gold profit taxed in Australia?
Selling gold for more than you paid is usually a capital gain. If you are an Australian resident individual and owned the gold for at least 12 months, the ATO lets you halve the gain before adding it to your income. Sell sooner and the whole gain is taxable. Keep your purchase invoices.
Is it cheaper to buy from The Perth Mint or a dealer?
It depends on the product. On 11 October 2026, The Perth Mint's own 1oz cast bar was the cheapest item we found, but its 1oz Swan minted bar cost A$29.15 more than the identical bar at Ainslie Bullion and A$21.20 more than Jaggards' bank transfer price. Read Perth Mint vs ABC Bullion.
What is the difference between a cast bar and a minted bar?
A cast bar is made by pouring molten gold into a mould, so it has a rougher finish and is usually cheaper. A minted bar is cut from a gold strip and struck like a coin, giving sharp detail, and usually comes sealed in a card. Both contain the same gold. Our guide on cast vs minted gold bars explains more.
Can I hold gold in my super fund?
A self-managed super fund can hold physical gold if its investment strategy allows it, but the gold must belong to the fund, be stored apart from members' personal assets and not be used by members. The rules are strict, so read our guide to gold in an SMSF and speak to your fund's adviser.
Why does Jaggards show two prices?
Jaggards lists a standard price and a lower discounted price for bank transfer and cash payments. For its 1oz Perth Mint Swan minted bar on 11 October 2026, the gap was A$108.38: A$6,193.19 by bank transfer or cash against A$6,301.57 otherwise. Always check which payment method a quoted price assumes.
