What is gold worth per ounce, gram and kilo in AUD?
Australian buyers meet three units. Coins and small bars are sold by the troy ounce, jewellery and scrap are priced by the gram, and larger bars come in 100 g and 1 kg sizes. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, about 10% heavier than the ounce on a kitchen scale, so always use troy figures. Some older jewellers and scrap buyers still quote in pennyweights.

How much is 9ct, 18ct and 22ct gold worth in Australia?
Australian jewellery is usually stamped with its carat (such as 9ct or 18ct) or with parts per thousand (375 or 750). Australia spells it "carat", and 22ct is often seen in South Asian jewellery. The stamp is applied by the maker or importer, so a gold buyer will usually test the metal before paying. Melt value is the live price multiplied by the purity.
| Carat | Fine gold | Melt value per gram | Melt value per troy oz of item |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24ct (bars and Kangaroo coins) | 99.9%+ | ... | ... |

What are a Kangaroo, a Lunar coin and a gold bar worth?
Australia's best-known bullion comes from the Perth Mint, which is operated by Gold Corporation and wholly owned by the Government of Western Australia (Perth Mint). It makes the Gold Kangaroo coin, the yearly Lunar series and cast and minted bars, including the Australian Swan minted bar, all in 99.99% gold. So the gold inside a 1 oz Perth Mint coin or bar is a full troy ounce. The table shows what that gold is worth right now.
| Coin or bar | Fine gold | Melt value (live) |
|---|---|---|
| 1 oz Gold Kangaroo | 1 oz | ... |
| 1/2 oz Gold Kangaroo | 0.5 oz | ... |
| 1/4 oz Gold Kangaroo | 0.25 oz | ... |
| 1/10 oz Gold Kangaroo | 0.1 oz | ... |

How much over spot does the Perth Mint charge?
The amount added to spot is the premium. We read the single-bar prices on the Perth Mint's own online shop on 11 October 2026, when spot was A$6,012.71 an ounce.
| Product | Bar type | Price | Premium over spot | Extra over gold value |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Perth Mint 1oz cast bar | Cast (poured) | A$6,184.39 | 2.86% | A$171.68 |
| Perth Mint 1oz Australian Swan minted bar | Minted (stamped) | A$6,214.39 | 3.35% | A$201.68 |
GoldVetted automated price check, 11 October 2026. Premium = price divided by spot, minus one. No GST was added, as both bars are 99.99% gold.
The minted bar cost A$30 more than the cast bar for the same ounce of gold. Minted bars are cut and stamped, which takes more work and gives a smoother finish, while cast bars are poured into a mould; see cast vs minted gold bars. We have not yet published checks for other Australian dealers, so compare them in our Australian dealer reviews, the Perth Mint vs ABC Bullion comparison and our page on buying from the Perth Mint.

Remember the other side: dealers buy back below spot, so gold has to rise by more than the premium before you could sell at a profit.
Do you pay GST on gold in Australia?
Not on investment gold, though the legal route is unusual. The GST law treats gold of at least 99.5% fineness in an investment form (a bar, wafer or bullion coin that trades on the bullion market and is priced from spot) as "precious metal". The first sale after refining, from a refiner to a dealer, is GST-free, and every later sale is input taxed, which means the seller charges no GST (ATO ruling GSTR 2003/10). The same ruling says proof coins and granules do not count, so GST can apply to them, and jewellery carries the normal 10% GST.
| Item | Counts as precious metal? | GST added? |
|---|---|---|
| Kangaroo bullion coin, 99.99% bars | Yes | No |
| Proof coins | No (ATO view) | Yes, usually |
| 22ct coins such as Sovereigns or Krugerrands | No (below 99.5%) | Yes, usually |
| Gold jewellery | No | Yes, 10% |
If you sell for a profit, the capital gain is taxed, with a 50% discount for Australian resident individuals who owned the gold for at least 12 months (ATO). Read the Australia gold tax guide and the page on gold in an SMSF.
Why does the gold price in AUD move overnight?
Most gold trading happens while Australia sleeps, during London and New York hours, so the price you see over breakfast often differs from last night's. The Australian dollar price moves because of:
- The world gold price. Driven by US interest rate expectations, central bank buying and fear.
- The US dollar. A strong dollar usually weighs on gold.
- The AUD/USD rate. The Australian dollar often rises and falls with China demand and commodity prices. A weaker Aussie dollar lifts gold in AUD.

What time is the gold market open in Australia?
There is no Australian benchmark price. Local prices follow the LBMA Gold Price, an auction held twice each London business day and run by ICE Benchmark Administration (see the LBMA price data), and COMEX futures in New York, converted into Australian dollars. For Australians, that puts the key moments in the evening and overnight.
| Event | Sydney, Melbourne (AEST, winter) | Sydney, Melbourne (AEDT, summer) | Perth (AWST) |

Converted from 10:30 and 15:00 London time and from CME's Sunday 6:00 p.m. to Friday 5:00 p.m. US Eastern hours. Ranges reflect daylight saving changes in the UK, US and eastern Australia; Queensland does not use daylight saving. Our guide on how gold prices are set covers the rest.
How should I use the price when buying or selling?
- Work out the live melt value of the coin, bar or jewellery.
- Get the dealer's total price, including delivery, insurance and card fees.
- Divide by melt value and take away one: that is your premium.
- Ask for the buy-back price as a share of spot before you buy.

Frequently asked questions
What is the gold price in Australia today?
The live price is at the top of this page in Australian dollars per troy ounce, with the update time. It is the spot price, the wholesale rate. A coin or bar costs more: on 11 October 2026 the Perth Mint sold a 1oz cast bar for A$6,184.39, 2.86% above spot of A$6,012.71.
How much is a gram of gold worth in AUD?
Divide the ounce price by 31.1035 to get the price per gram of pure gold, which the table above shows live. Jewellery is worth less per gram because it is an alloy: 9ct is 37.5% gold, 18ct is 75% and 22ct is 91.7%.
Do you pay GST on gold in Australia?
Not on investment gold. Gold of at least 99.5% fineness in an investment form, such as a bar or bullion coin, counts as precious metal. The first sale after refining is GST-free and later sales are input taxed, so no GST is added to the price you pay. The ATO says proof coins do not qualify, and jewellery carries 10% GST.
Why is the gold price in AUD different from the US price?
Gold is priced in US dollars and converted to Australian dollars at the live exchange rate. If the Australian dollar weakens, gold costs more in AUD even when the US price is flat. A rising Aussie dollar has the opposite effect.
What is a Perth Mint Kangaroo worth?
The 1 oz Gold Kangaroo from the Perth Mint is 99.99% pure and holds one troy ounce of gold, so its melt value equals the live ounce price on this page. Dealers sell it above that value because of the premium. Smaller sizes hold a fraction of an ounce, as the coin table shows.
How is a gain on gold taxed in Australia?
Selling gold at a profit is usually a capital gain. Australian resident individuals who owned the gold for at least 12 months can generally reduce the gain by 50% before tax, according to the ATO. Gold held for less time gets no discount. Ask a registered tax agent about your own circumstances.
What time does the gold market open in Australia?
The global gold week begins on Monday morning Australian time, when New York futures reopen: about 8:00 to 10:00 a.m. in Sydney and 6:00 to 7:00 a.m. in Perth, depending on daylight saving. The London benchmark auctions fall in the Australian evening and around midnight on the east coast. The market closes early on Saturday morning.
