Spot-based melt values in Australian dollars, not dealer or buyer prices. Ounce and kilo prices, Kangaroo coin values and Perth Mint bar premiums are on the main gold price in AUD page. See what the spot price means if the term is new.

Australians price gold by the gram mostly when they sell jewellery or buy a small minted bar. The numbers below let you check an offer from a jeweller, a cash-for-gold buyer or the Perth Mint's own trading room against what the gold is really worth.

How much is gold worth per gram by carat in Australia?

Carat (spelt with a "c" in Australia) is parts of gold out of 24. The other parts are alloy metals added for strength and colour. The carats you will meet most often here are 9ct, the everyday choice for chains and rings; 18ct, used for engagement rings and finer pieces; and 22ct, common in jewellery bought in India, the Middle East and South-East Asia. To value a piece, multiply its weight in grams by the per-gram figure for its carat.

What do Australian gold stamps mean?

Australia has no government assay office that tests and hallmarks every item. There is a national standard, AS 2140, which sets composition and marking requirements for precious-metal jewellery and uses the millesimal system (375, 750 and so on) rather than carats, according to a 2008 Jewellery World report on its launch. But following it is not policed: in 2012 the Gold and Silversmiths Guild of Australia told Jeweller Magazine that the government was not enforcing the standard and that no penalties exist for ignoring it.

In practice, that means:

  • A "375" or "9ct" stamp is the maker's or importer's claim, not an independent test.
  • Pieces with no stamp, or a worn one, are harder to sell. The Perth Mint says it may refuse items without visible or legible hallmarks.
  • Stamps such as "GF", "GP" or "HGE" mean gold-filled or plated. These hold very little gold and are not valued at the carat gram price.
  • Any serious buyer tests the metal before paying.

For what "pure" means in practice, read what 24 karat gold is.

What does the Perth Mint pay per gram for gold jewellery?

The Perth Mint, owned by the Government of Western Australia, buys gold jewellery over the counter at its East Perth trading room and publishes indicative per-gram prices on its sell your gold jewellery page. We recorded them on 11 October 2026; the page's prices were stamped 10/10/2026, 04:58:08 AM. That was just after the market's Friday close, so we compared them with the spot price that held over the weekend: A$6,012.71 an ounce, or A$193.31 a gram.

Perth Mint figures copied from its website on 11 October 2026. Melt value = spot per gram x fineness. "Kept per gram" is melt value minus the price paid. These are fixed figures, not live: the Perth Mint updates its prices with the market.

Every carat came out at the same 77% of melt, which suggests a single flat percentage applied to the gold content. Points to know before you go, all from the Perth Mint's page:

  • Prices on the website are indicative only and are finalised in store at the time of trading.
  • You need an account set up in store with 100 points of ID, and photo ID on every visit.
  • Money goes only to an Australian bank account in your own name, normally in two business days, or five for jewellery over A$5,000.
  • Deductions may apply for gemstones and other non-metal parts, and it does not currently accept jewellery by mail.

Other buyers may pay more or less than 77%, so use the Perth Mint figure as a benchmark when you ask for quotes. Our guide to how to sell gold in Australia covers the alternatives, and the Perth Mint buying guide covers its bullion side.

What are gram gold bars worth in Australia?

Small minted bars are how many Australians start buying gold. The Perth Mint's Australian Swan range, for example, includes a 1g minted bar in 99.99% gold (Perth Mint). The table shows the value of the gold in each common size.

Smaller bars cost more per gram to buy, because minting, packaging and handling cost much the same for 1g as for 20g. Divide any dealer's price by the bar's weight and compare it with the 24ct figure at the top of this page. That tells you the real cost per gram. The guide to buying gold in Australia compares dealers.

A troy ounce, the unit used for bullion, is 31.1035 grams, heavier than the 28.35g ounce used for food. Is there GST on gold by the gram?

For investment gold, no. Under the GST law, gold of at least 99.5% fineness in an investment form (a bar, wafer or bullion coin traded on the bullion market and priced from spot) is precious metal. The first sale after refining is GST-free and later sales are input taxed, so no GST is added (ATO ruling GSTR 2003/10).

Proof coinOften 99.99%Yes, usually (not investment form, ATO view)
9ct to 22ct jewellery37.5% to 91.7%Yes, 10%

That 10% GST, plus design, labour and retail margin, is why a new 9ct chain costs far more per gram than its melt value, and why the gap is not recovered when you sell. Profits on gold may also face capital gains tax; see the Australia gold tax guide.

Frequently asked questions

What is 1 gram of 24ct gold worth in Australia?

The live figure at the top of this page is the spot value of one gram of pure gold in Australian dollars, which is the ounce price divided by 31.1035. A jeweller or gold buyer pays less than this when buying, and a dealer charges more when selling you a 1g bar.

How much does the Perth Mint pay per gram for 9ct gold?

Its website showed an indicative A$55.80 a gram for 9ct jewellery, stamped 10/10/2026 at 04:58 AM. That was about 77% of the gold's melt value at spot at the time. The Perth Mint says website prices are indicative and are finalised in store, and it does not accept jewellery by mail.

Is 9ct gold worth selling?

9ct gold is 37.5% gold, so a gram holds 0.375 g of pure gold and is worth well under half the 24ct gram price. Its value comes from weight: a heavy 9ct chain can still be worth hundreds of dollars at melt. Compare offers per gram at the 9ct rate before selling.

Is hallmarking compulsory in Australia?

There is no government assay office stamping Australian jewellery. Standards Australia's AS 2140 sets marking requirements using millesimal figures such as 375 and 750, but trade press has reported that the government does not enforce it and that there are no penalties. A stamp is the maker's claim, so buyers test the metal.

Is there GST on gold bought by the gram in Australia?

Not on investment gold. A bar or bullion coin of at least 99.5% gold, in investment form, is precious metal under the GST law: the first sale after refining is GST-free and later sales are input taxed, so no GST is added. Jewellery carries 10% GST, and the ATO says proof coins do not qualify.

Why does the per-gram price change overnight?

Most gold trading happens during London and New York hours, which is night-time in Australia. The Australian dollar price also moves with the AUD/USD exchange rate. So the morning price often differs from the evening before, and weekend prices repeat Friday's close.
