Silver Gold Bull vs Kitco: which is better?

By GoldVetted Editorial TeamLast updated Last fact-checked How we research
Quick answer

Choose Silver Gold Bull if you are spending under CA$5,000, want to pay by Interac e-Transfer with a 4% discount, or want vault storage abroad. Choose Kitco if you buy CA$5,000 or more, want published Canadian-dollar buy prices, or want Montreal counter pick-up. Kitco's Maple Leaf was 5.70% over spot on 12 October 2026.

Both are online bullion dealers that Canadians often find first, and both knock 4% off for paying from a bank account. The similarities end there. Kitco is a Montreal firm, trading since 1977, that shows its buy and sell prices to anyone. Silver Gold Bull is a Calgary e-commerce business majority owned by a US-listed parent, with no minimum order but no published price we could check.

Which is cheaper for gold in Canadian dollars?

A dealer's price is the spot price (the live market price of one troy ounce of gold) plus a premium. We tried to capture both dealers' prices for a 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf on the same morning. Kitco's page could be read. Silver Gold Bull's site does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a premium for it.

Premium = price / spot - 1. Kitco's random-year Maple Leaf was out of stock at our check. See the October 2026 Canada premium report.

How to compare Silver Gold Bull yourself: open the same coin on its site, take the listed price (which already includes the 4% cash discount), divide by the spot price shown in the sidebar and subtract 1. Under 5.7% beats Kitco's figure above; under about 1.7% beats the cheapest Maple Leaf we captured. Silver Gold Bull also advertises a price-match guarantee, so a dated quote from another dealer is worth having.

The Canadian-dollar gap at Kitco

Kitco lists prices in both US and Canadian dollars, and they do not convert at the market rate. Within three minutes on 12 October, its random-year Gold Eagle cost US$4,340.40 and CA$6,301.40 by wire, implying about 1.452 Canadian dollars per US dollar against a market rate of 1.4256. Buying in CAD therefore cost about 1.8% more than the US price converted at market. On the selling side, its CAD bid implied a rate about 1.2% below market. Every dealer builds in a currency margin; Kitco's is simply visible because it publishes both. If you already hold US dollars, compare both prices before you order.

Paying from a Canadian bank: which is easier?

Both reward paying from your bank, but the details matter for small and first-time orders.

Payment methods and the 4% discount (from each dealer's payment page)
MethodSilver Gold BullKitco (first order)
Interac e-TransferUp to CA$20,000; 4% discountUp to CA$10,000; not on discount list
Online bill paymentBank's limit; 4% discountNo stated limit, 11 banks; 4% discount
WireCA$1,000 and up; 4% discountNo stated limit; 4% discount

Credit cardUp to CA$20,000; no discountUp to CA$10,000; no discount
Payment deadline72 hours3 business days

For e-Transfer users, Silver Gold Bull is the easier fit: the discount applies and the limit is higher. Kitco's online bill payment from banks such as RBC, TD, BMO, CIBC, Scotiabank, National Bank and Desjardins earns its discount with no stated limit. Silver Gold Bull warns that late e-Transfers can trigger "market loss charges", and that direct deposits or branch transfers may be held for 60 days or more.

Shipping, insurance and pick-up

Silver Gold Bull ships free on orders over $999, with insurance, tracking and signature included; smaller orders show a charge in the cart, listed at $19.95. It packs within five business days of cleared payment. Kitco ships free over $5,000, which covers every physical bullion order because of its minimum, but charges insurance separately at 0.65% of value, about CA$41 on one Maple Leaf. Kitco's Montreal counter offers free pick-up when the item is in stock (see our Montreal gold buying guide); Silver Gold Bull offers Brink's pick-up in the Greater Toronto Area. Gold of 99.5% purity or better, including Maple Leafs, is exempt from GST/HST at both; our Canadian gold tax guide explains the rule.

Selling gold back: which buyback suits you?

Kitco is one of the few Canadian dealers that shows its bids without an account. At 07:32 UTC on 12 October 2026 it offered CA$5,846.66 for a 1 oz Maple Leaf, 2.06% under spot of CA$5,969.41, and CA$5,729.13 for a Royal Canadian Mint 1 oz bar (4.03% under). A confirmed price is guaranteed if your parcel is postmarked within one business day and arrives within 10. Assisted shipping costs $35 plus $6.50 per $1,000 of insurance, deducted from your payout, and the minimum sale is CA$5,000. At 08:39 UTC, buying a 2026 Maple Leaf and selling one back would have cost CA$455.78, or 7.2%: the spread gold has to rise by just to break even.

Silver Gold Bull's Sell Cart shows live payout quotes in your account. Once you confirm, it emails shipping labels; shipping is free and insured above $5,000 and a flat $50 below. It pays within one business day of verifying your metal, by wallet credit, direct deposit or wire. We could not capture its buy prices automatically, so we cannot say how they compare with Kitco's. Our guide to selling gold in Canada compares other buyers.

Storage: Calgary and abroad vs the Royal Canadian Mint

Silver Gold Bull's storage page lists six facilities in Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and Singapore, including its own Calgary facility with video audits. Holdings are allocated and segregated (your own bars, kept apart) and insured through Lloyd's of London. Customers outside North America can currently buy only for storage. Kitco offers allocated storage in Canadian vaults including the Royal Canadian Mint, plus Hong Kong and a COMEX-approved US depository, and a Kitco Pool unallocated account with no minimum. Neither publishes storage fees; both quote on request, so get the yearly figure in writing. For registered accounts, see gold in an RRSP or TFSA.

Frequently asked questions

Is Silver Gold Bull or Kitco cheaper for a gold Maple Leaf?

We can only measure Kitco. Its 2026 1 oz Maple Leaf cost CA$6,294.14 by wire on 12 October 2026, 5.70% over spot. Silver Gold Bull's site does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a premium for it. Gold Stock Canada sold a random-year Maple Leaf at 1.68% on 11 October, a useful benchmark for both.

Can I buy a single gold coin from Kitco?

Not as a physical bullion order. Kitco's How to Buy FAQ sets a CA$5,000 minimum for physical bullion, online, by phone or at its Montreal counter, and the same minimum applies when you sell. Silver Gold Bull has no minimum order stated on its policy pages and ships free on orders over $999.

Who owns Silver Gold Bull and who owns Kitco?

Silver Gold Bull, founded in Calgary in 2009, has been 55.4% owned since June 2024 by Gold.com, Inc. (formerly A-Mark Precious Metals), a US-listed company. Kitco Metals Inc. is a Montreal company that its corporate site says began in 1977 as a scrap precious metals business. Both are profiled by the LBMA as Affiliate Members.

Do both give a discount for paying by e-Transfer or wire?

Both give 4%, but on different methods. Silver Gold Bull's 4% cash discount covers Interac e-Transfer, online bill payment and wire, and is built into its listed prices. Kitco's 4% covers wire, cheque, bank draft and online bill payment; Interac e-Transfer is not on its discount list. Cards and PayPal pay the higher price at both.

Why are Kitco's Canadian-dollar prices higher than its US prices?

Kitco prices in both currencies, and its CAD prices carry a currency margin. On 12 October 2026, buying in CAD implied an exchange rate about 1.8% above the market rate, and selling in CAD about 1.2% below it. If you already hold US dollars, compare both before ordering. Silver Gold Bull's own currency margin cannot be measured because it blocks automated checks.

Which is better for storing gold, Silver Gold Bull or Kitco?

Both offer allocated, segregated storage with fees by quote. Silver Gold Bull uses six facilities in four countries, including its own Calgary vault with video audits, insured through Lloyd's of London. Kitco offers Canadian vaults including the Royal Canadian Mint, plus Hong Kong and US options, and an unallocated Kitco Pool account with no minimum.

Which pays faster when I sell gold back?

Silver Gold Bull says it pays within one business day of verifying your metal, with free insured shipping on sales over $5,000 and a flat $50 below. Kitco publishes CAD bids anyone can see, guarantees a confirmed price if you ship promptly, and charges $35 plus $6.50 per $1,000 of insurance for assisted shipping, with a CA$5,000 minimum.
