Where to buy and sell gold in Montreal

By GoldVetted Editorial TeamLast updated Last fact-checked How we research
Quick answer

Montreal is home to Kitco, which sells and buys bullion from a downtown counter, with a CA$5,000 minimum. For a single coin, Canada Gold on Avenue Van Horne listed a 1 oz Maple Leaf at CA$6,050, 1.68% over spot, on 12 October 2026. Gold of 99.5% purity or more pays no GST or QST.

Montreal has something most Canadian cities do not: one of the country's best-known bullion dealers has its head office downtown. That is useful if you are buying in bulk, but Kitco's minimum order puts it out of reach for a first coin. This guide lists the Montreal dealers we could verify from their own websites and the Royal Canadian Mint's dealer list, compares their prices with online sellers that deliver to the island, and explains how the Quebec sales tax (QST) treats gold. For the national picture, see the best places to buy gold in Canada.

Which bullion dealers are in Montreal?

The Royal Canadian Mint publishes a list of its authorized bullion dealers. For Montreal it names two: Kitco Metals Inc. and Canada Gold. Both also appear on their own sites with Montreal premises. We add one long-standing coin dealer that is useful for collector pieces and for selling, and one South Shore option.

Kitco has traded since 1977 and is a Royal Canadian Mint authorized dealer. Online orders can be picked up free at the downtown counter when the item is in stock, which saves the 0.65% insurance charge on a shipped parcel. Paying by online bill payment from a Montreal bank such as Desjardins or National Bank earns its 4% discount.

Carsley's site describes it as a coin store operating since 1928 that buys coins and gold jewellery. It does not list gold bullion for sale, so treat it as a place to value older or collector coins rather than to buy a Maple Leaf.

On the South Shore, Monnaie Collection Royale in Brossard is also on the Mint's dealer list. Its site sells 1 oz Maple Leafs and Mint bars and offers buyback, but shows only a postal box, not a storefront, so plan on delivery.

Is it cheaper to buy gold in Montreal or online?

On the coin most people buy, a local store matched the cheapest online dealer in our checks. The table puts the Montreal options next to online sellers that deliver to Quebec. The premium is the amount paid above the gold's spot value.

The Montreal advantage is not price so much as the round trip. At Canada Gold the gap between its selling price (CA$6,050) and buying price (CA$5,800) for the same coin was CA$250, about 4.1%, and you can do both in one visit. Kitco's equivalent gap was 7.2% on its MintFirst coin. Buying online means waiting for a parcel and, if you sell later, posting it back.

Online still wins on choice. If you want a specific bar brand or a quantity a store does not have, a dealer such as Silver Gold Bull ships free over $999, insured and signed for.

How does the QST apply to gold in Quebec?

Quebec runs its own sales tax alongside the federal GST, at 9.975% under section 16 of the Act respecting the Québec sales tax. For gold, the QST copies the federal test. The Act defines "precious metal" as a bar, ingot, coin or wafer of gold at least 99.5% pure and lists it as a financial instrument, the same way the CRA's Memorandum 17-1 treats it for GST.

Proof or collector coinVariesUsually 5%Usually 9.975%
Gold jewelleryUsually 10K to 18K5%9.975%

Based on the purity test in the QST Act and the Excise Tax Act. Check the tax line on your receipt; the seller applies the tax.

Together, GST and QST add almost 15% to a 22 karat coin. On a CA$6,000 Gold Eagle that is about CA$900, which wipes out any premium saving. That is why Quebec buyers who want only the gold value usually stick to Maple Leafs and .9999 bars. Profits when you sell fall under federal and Quebec income tax as capital gains; our Canadian gold tax guide explains the rules.

Can I buy gold at a bank in Montreal?

Two big banks still sell gold to everyday customers. TD sells coins and bars through TD Precious Metals online and at TD Canada Trust branches; its customers can spend up to CA$24,999.99 a day online. CIBC sells Maple Leafs and bars through online banking, up to CA$9,500 in 24 hours, and at banking centres for larger amounts. Desjardins and National Bank are not on the Mint's dealer list, so ask your branch before you go. The trade-offs, including stricter buyback rules, are in our guide to buying gold from Canadian banks.

For one or two coins, Canada Gold is the practical choice: Kitco will not buy less than CA$5,000 of bullion and does not buy jewellery from individuals. For a larger holding, Kitco's higher bid can outweigh its CA$35 shipping charge. For old or collector coins, a numismatic dealer such as Carsley may value the coin above its gold content. Our guide to where to sell gold in Canada covers jewellery and scrap.

How do I stay safe buying gold in person?

  • Stick to listed dealers. The Mint's dealer list is a good starting filter. Ads offering Maple Leafs below spot on classified sites are a common gold scam.
  • Ask for the price per coin in writing before you pay, and compare it with the live spot figure at the top of this page.
  • Bring photo ID. Canada Gold asks for it at pickup, and any dealer must identify you on transactions of CA$10,000 or more.
  • Avoid carrying large sums of cash. In Quebec, Canada Gold accepts wire, debit and bank draft; a wire or draft leaves a paper trail.
  • Know how to check a coin. Maple Leafs dated 2014 or later carry the Mint's Bullion DNA security mark; our guide on how to tell if gold is real covers simple tests.

Buying gold elsewhere in Canada

Our local guides cover buying and selling gold in Toronto, where several online dealers have showrooms, buying and selling gold in Ottawa, home to the Royal Canadian Mint's Sussex Drive boutique, and buying and selling gold in Winnipeg, where the Mint strikes Canada's circulation coins.
