Where to buy and sell gold in Winnipeg

By GoldVetted Editorial TeamLast updated Last fact-checked How we research
Quick answer

Winnipeg buyers can visit the Royal Canadian Mint's boutique on Lagimodière Boulevard, which sells Mint bullion when in stock, or two Corydon Avenue dealers. On 12 October 2026, Gatewest Coin listed a 1 oz Maple Leaf at CA$6,077.50 (2.17% over spot) and Canada Gold at CA$6,050 (1.68%). Pure bullion pays no RST or GST.

Winnipeg is one of only two cities where the Royal Canadian Mint has a production plant, and its Winnipeg facility is where the Mint mass-produces Canada's circulation coins. That makes it an unusual place to shop for gold: you can buy a Maple Leaf at the source, then compare it with a local coin dealer that publishes its buy and sell prices online. This guide covers both, plus Manitoba's sales tax rules and how delivery from out-of-province dealers stacks up. For every Canadian seller we track, see the best places to buy gold in Canada.

Can you buy gold at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg?

Yes. The Mint's Winnipeg facility page says you can buy its bullion products there, with one caveat: availability is not guaranteed. The building, designed by architect Étienne Gaboury, rises from the prairie like a glass prism, and the Mint says it draws close to 70,000 visitors a year.

Because the Mint does not post boutique bullion prices, you cannot compare before you travel. Note the live prices from the two dealers below on your phone first, then ask the boutique for its price per coin. The Mint's own online shop is a different matter: its 1 oz premium coins cost 19.80% to 24.99% over spot when we checked them on 12 October 2026, and its standard Maple Leaf has no online price. Our guide to buying from the Royal Canadian Mint explains the difference.

Which gold dealers are in Winnipeg?

The Mint's authorized dealer list names one Winnipeg firm, Gatewest Stamp & Coin. Canada Gold, which appears on the same list for other cities, also runs a Winnipeg store.

Gatewest describes itself as an official Royal Canadian Mint distributor with industry experience since 1972. Its bullion pages refresh every minute and show both what it charges and what it pays, coin by coin. Two things to know: the posted prices are cash-discounted and "prices and policies in our retail store may vary", and it accepts no more than CA$5,000 in cash per customer in 48 hours. If you order by phone, the metal must be shipped to you rather than collected.

Two Winnipeg stores sit within half a percentage point of the cheapest online price we found anywhere in Canada. Ordering online makes more sense for a product neither store has, or if you would rather not travel with gold. Calgary-based Silver Gold Bull ships free and insured over $999, but says orders can take up to five business days to pack. For Mint online orders, the Mint itself quotes 4 to 9 days by Canada Post to major cities outside Ontario, plus two days of processing.

Fractional coins cost far more per ounce wherever you buy. At Gatewest, a 1/10 oz Maple Leaf was CA$649.50, a 9.19% premium, against 2.17% for the full ounce.

Do you pay PST on gold in Manitoba?

Manitoba's provincial sales tax is called RST and its general rate is 7%. The province spells out its gold rules in RST Bulletin 043, revised in July 2026. Bullion sold as bars, ingots, coins or wafers of gold at least 99.5% pure is exempt, regardless of value, weight or packaging. That matches the federal GST rule in the CRA's Memorandum 17-1.

Sales tax on gold bought in Manitoba
ProductGST (5%)RST (7%)
Gold Maple Leaf, any size (99.99%)NoNo
Recognized .9999 gold barNoNo
Krugerrand or Gold Eagle (91.67%)YesYes, as it is not exempt bullion
Proof, collector or commemorative coin sold above face valueUsuallyYes, unless it qualifies as bullion

This is where Manitoba differs from Alberta or Quebec. Gatewest's own tax note says pure gold collector's coins are tax-free in every province except Manitoba, where PST applies. So a pure gold proof coin bought from the Mint boutique can carry 7% RST in Winnipeg even though the same coin's gold content is 99.99%. If you only want the metal, stick to standard bullion. For income tax when you sell, see our Canadian gold tax guide.

Gatewest buys any quantity and says in-store sellers are paid the same day. Buying a current-date Maple Leaf at CA$6,077.50 and selling it straight back for CA$5,843.69 would cost CA$233.81, or 3.8%. That spread is what the gold price has to rise before you break even. Gatewest also posts per-gram prices for scrap jewellery: CA$102.38 a gram for 14K at the same time. TD clients can sell at any TD branch. More options, including mail-in buyers, are in our guide to where to sell gold in Canada.

Staying safe when you buy in person

  • Check the price against spot before you pay. A 1 oz Maple Leaf more than about 5% over spot was expensive on the day we checked.
  • Know the cash rules. Gatewest caps cash at CA$5,000 per 48 hours, and dealers must report cash of CA$10,000 or more to FINTRAC.
  • Bring government photo ID for the Mint boutique, Canada Gold pickups and any large sale.
  • Be wary of private sellers. Our guide to gold scams lists warning signs, and how to tell if gold is real covers simple checks.
  • Plan where it will live. Our gold storage guide compares home safes and bank boxes.

Frequently asked questions

Can you buy gold at the Royal Canadian Mint in Winnipeg?

Yes. The Mint's Winnipeg facility at 520 Lagimodière Boulevard has a boutique that sells Royal Canadian Mint bullion products, subject to availability. Prices are not published online, so call or ask in store. Government-issued ID may be required for cash or larger purchases. From Labour Day to Victoria Day the boutique opens Tuesday to Saturday.

Is the Winnipeg Mint open to visitors?

Yes. The Mint runs 45-minute guided tours of the Winnipeg facility, where Canada's circulation coins are mass-produced. Its site lists adult admission at $14, seniors $12, children aged 5 to 17 $10 and a family rate of $30, plus taxes. Seeing production is not guaranteed, and groups of 20 or more must book by email.

Do I pay PST on gold in Manitoba?

Not on investment-grade bullion. Manitoba's RST Bulletin 043 exempts gold bars, ingots, coins and wafers of at least 99.5% purity, whatever their weight. Coins that are sold above face value and do not qualify as bullion, such as proof and collector coins, are subject to RST at the general 7% rate, plus 5% GST where it applies.

Where can I sell gold coins in Winnipeg?

Gatewest Coin publishes live buy prices: CA$5,843.69 for a current-date 1 oz Maple Leaf at 6:21 a.m. Central on 12 October 2026, and pays in-store customers the same day. Canada Gold on Corydon Avenue listed CA$5,800. TD buys from its own clients at branches. See our guide to selling gold in Canada.

Is it cheaper to buy gold in Winnipeg or online?

In our 12 October 2026 checks the gap was small. Canada Gold's walk-in 1 oz Maple Leaf was 1.68% over spot and Gatewest's was 2.17%, against 1.68% to 3.16% at online dealers in Toronto. Buying locally avoids a wait of several days for a parcel, while online dealers offer more choice.

Does Gatewest Coin take cash for gold?

Only up to a limit. Gatewest says it accepts no more than CA$5,000 in cash from one customer in a 48-hour period, and treats people sharing cash as one customer. The rest can be paid by debit card. For phone orders it asks for certified funds or a bank wire, with a credit card used only as a deposit.
