Kitco review: is it a good place to buy gold?
Kitco is best known for its gold price charts, but it is also a long-established bullion dealer selling to US buyers in dollars. On October 12, 2026, its 1 oz Gold Eagle cost $4,340.40 by wire, 3.89% over spot, with a $5,000 minimum order. It suits larger buyers who want published buy prices and storage options.
Type "gold price" into a search engine and Kitco is usually near the top. That brand recognition comes from the price charts and news site, which Kitco says it launched in 1995. The dealing business is older: the company traces its start to 1977. This review is about the store, not the charts. We look at what Kitco charges a US buyer, how its rules compare with the big US dealers, and how to use its published buy prices even if you never buy from it.

How Kitco scores on our checks
We use the same criteria for every dealer and record what we could verify, not testimonials or star ratings. The method is explained in how we review gold dealers.
| Check | Result | What we found |
|---|---|---|
| Ownership and track record | Meets | Trading since 1977; LBMA Affiliate Member; A+ in BBB search results. |
| Clear, live pricing | Meets | Live prices with quantity tiers and separate wire, card and Bitcoin columns on each product page. |
| Premium we could verify | Meets | Gold Eagle at 3.89% over spot by wire on October 12, 2026, between SD Bullion (3.33%) and APMEX (5.59%) a day earlier. |
| Low payment fees | Meets | 4% discount for wire, check and online bill pay; card costs about 4% more. |
| Small orders | Does not meet | $5,000 minimum on physical bullion. |
| Insured delivery | Partly | Fully insured in transit with a signature, but insurance is billed on top (0.65% to 0.99% of value). |
| Buyback available | Meets | Buy prices published openly, with a price guarantee once you create a packing slip. |
How much does Kitco charge?
Every dealer sells at the spot price plus a premium. Kitco lists its premium in the price table on each product page. We captured its American Gold Eagle on the morning of October 12, 2026 and compared it with the two big US dealers in our tracker.
| Dealer | Checked (UTC) | Wire or check | Premium | Card or PayPal | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| SD Bullion (BU) | Oct 11, 22:26 | $4,327.23 | 3.33% | $4,507.53 | 7.64% |
| Kitco (may be circulated) | Oct 12, 08:36 | $4,340.40 | 3.89% | $4,521.25 | 8.22% |
| APMEX (BU) | Oct 11, 22:26 | $4,421.69 | 5.59% | $4,605.93 | 9.99% |
GoldVetted automated price checks, single-coin price. Kitco spot $4,177.90 (gold-api.com, 08:36 UTC on October 12, 2026); SD Bullion and APMEX spot $4,187.60 (22:26 UTC on October 11). Premium = price / spot - 1. Kitco's Bitcoin price was $4,384.24 (4.94%). Kitco says its random-year Eagles "may not be in mint condition" and lists the condition as circulated, while SD Bullion and APMEX sold brilliant uncirculated (BU) coins. Prices exclude Kitco's insurance charge. See the October 2026 US premium report.
So Kitco was in the same range as the big US dealers on price, though not the cheapest, and its coin was a slightly lower grade. On a 10-coin order the wire price drops by $10 a coin. The card price is about 4% higher, which matches the 4% discount Kitco gives for wire, check, online bill payment or funds held on account.
The extra costs to add
Kitco's minimum order is $5,000, and standard shipping is free above that, so in practice you pay no shipping. But Kitco charges insurance on every bullion order: 0.65% of the metal value ($6.50 per $1,000), rising to 0.80% for Washington and 0.99% for Texas. On two Gold Eagles (about $8,680) that adds about $56, or $86 in Texas. JM Bullion, for comparison, says it ships free and fully insured on orders over $199. Add sales tax if your state charges it on bullion; Kitco's FAQ says tax "may apply" depending on the state and the product.
Payment, shipping and delivery
Payment is due within three business days. US buyers have more ways to pay Kitco than most dealers offer, but the holds differ:
| Method | First-order limit | Hold before shipping | 4% discount? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Bank wire (same-day wires only, no ACH) | No stated limit | None | Yes |
| Cashier's check, certified check or bank money order | $25,000 | 3 business days | Yes |
| Personal or company check | $25,000 | 5 business days | Yes |
| Online bill pay (US banks) | No stated limit | 5 business days | Yes |
| E-check (via Plaid) | $7,500 | About 3 business days | Not listed |
| Bitcoin (via BitPay) | $10,000 | None | No; own price column |
| Visa, Mastercard or PayPal | $10,000 | None (may need verification) | No |
Kitco does not accept postal money orders, prepaid cards or third-party payments. Checks go to Kitco Metals Inc. at its Rouses Point, New York address with your account number written on them.
Parcels go by Kitco's preferred carriers in 2 to 5 business days, occasionally 10 to 15 by USPS for PO boxes and rural addresses. Every package needs a signature, and Kitco does not ship to APO addresses. Kitco's insurer covers loss in transit, but Kitco says it is not responsible if you have a signature waiver on file with the carrier, ship to a non-residential address, or let a third party sign. Report damage or missing items within 48 hours, and any return or exchange request within three business days of delivery.
Selling gold back to Kitco
Kitco is one of the few dealers that posts what it pays, so its sell page is useful even if you plan to sell elsewhere. These are the bids we captured on the evening of Sunday, October 11, 2026:
| Item (1 oz of gold) | Kitco pays | vs spot |
|---|---|---|
| Canadian Gold Maple Leaf | $4,154.62 | -0.76% |
| American Gold Buffalo | $4,133.75 | -1.26% |
| American Gold Eagle | $4,091.99 | -2.25% |
| South African Krugerrand | $4,071.11 | -2.75% |
| 1 oz bar, .9999 (Valcambi, Argor-Heraeus or Johnson Matthey, in assay card) | $4,071.11 | -2.75% |
GoldVetted automated capture of Kitco's "Sell to Kitco" page in USD. On October 12 at about 08:38 UTC, with spot near $4,177, the bids were $4,146.26 (Maple Leaf), $4,125.43 (Buffalo), $4,083.76 (Eagle) and $4,062.92 (Krugerrand and 1 oz bars).
Notice the pattern: Kitco paid more for pure 24-karat Maples and Buffalos than for 22-karat Eagles and Krugerrands holding the same ounce of gold. If you buy Eagles mainly to sell later, that gap is worth knowing.
How it works. Pick your items, create a packing slip online and ship. A price confirmed on the slip is guaranteed if the parcel is postmarked within one business day and arrives within 10 business days. Kitco-assisted shipping is a flat $35 plus $6.50 per $1,000 of insurance, deductible from your payout. The minimum is $5,000 of physical metal, and Kitco buys scrap and jewelry only from businesses, not individuals.
The round trip. On the morning of October 12, Kitco sold a random-year Gold Eagle for $4,340.40 by wire and bid $4,083.76 for one. Buying and selling straight away would have cost $256.64, or 5.9% of the purchase price, before insurance. That spread is the real cost of owning gold for a short time. If you sell at a profit, the IRS taxes gains on gold held over a year as a collectible, at up to 28% (IRS Topic 409). Our guide to selling gold in the US compares other buyers.
Kitco as a price source: what the charts do and don't tell you
LBMA's profile of Kitco says it was "the first to publish live market prices online". Its charts are a widely used reference for spot. Two things to keep in mind when you use them to judge a dealer:
- The headline number is a bid. Kitco's sell page labels its ticker "BID PRICE (USD)". It is a market price for one ounce of pure gold, not what any coin costs at retail.
- Every product has its own premium. The same morning the ticker showed about $4,176, Kitco's own Eagle was $4,340.40 by wire and its Maple Leaf bid was $4,146.26. Use the chart for spot, then ask each dealer for the product price.
Our local coin shop vs online guide shows how to use Kitco's bids to test a local shop's buy offer.
What customers say
We do not invent ratings. These are the figures shown on independent sites when we checked on October 12, 2026:
| Site | Score shown | Based on |
|---|---|---|
| Trustpilot (online.kitco.com, the store) | 4.3 out of 5 | 7,306 reviews |
| Trustpilot (www.kitco.com, the news site) | 2.7 out of 5 | 14 reviews |
| Shopper Approved | 4.7 out of 5 | 10,753 reviews |
| Better Business Bureau | A+ rating | Shown in BBB search for the Rouses Point, NY listing; the full profile blocked our automated visit |
The store and the news site have separate Trustpilot pages, so make sure you are reading the right one. Store reviewers often mention careful packaging and helpful phone staff. The recurring complaints are about timing, especially how long sales take to settle.

Good fit: US buyers spending $5,000 or more at a time who want to see a dealer's buy price before they commit, are happy to pay by wire or check, or want allocated storage outside their home.
Look elsewhere if: you want one coin or a small bar, you want free insurance built into the price, or you want the lowest premium on uncirculated coins. SD Bullion was cheaper in our Gold Eagle check.

BBB search results show an A+ rating for its Rouses Point, New York listing, and it scored 4.3 out of 5 from 7,306 Trustpilot reviews when we checked on October 12, 2026. Its head office is in Montreal, Canada.
Is Kitco a US company?
No. Kitco Metals Inc. is headquartered in Montreal, Quebec. Canadian readers should see our separate Kitco Canada review.
What is Kitco's minimum order?
$5,000 for physical bullion, online or by phone, according to Kitco's How to Buy FAQ. The same $5,000 minimum applies when you sell physical metal to Kitco. Its unallocated Kitco Pool metal accounts and its Cool and Collectible range have no minimum, so the rule mainly affects people buying one or two coins.
Is the gold price on Kitco.com the price I pay?
No. The headline price on Kitco's charts is a market bid for one ounce of pure gold, a benchmark for spot. Any coin or bar costs more, because dealers add a premium. On October 12, 2026, Kitco's own 1 oz Gold Eagle was $4,340.40 by wire with spot at $4,177.90, a premium of 3.89%.
Does Kitco charge sales tax?
It can. Kitco's FAQ says sales tax may apply to orders shipped to certain states, depending on the product and local rules, and points to its US sales tax information page. Many states exempt investment gold, but some do not. Check our US gold tax guide for your state before you order.
Can I put Kitco gold in an IRA?
Kitco says it works with IRA custodians and will connect you to its partners once you place an order. Its Gold Eagle product page lists the coin as IRA eligible. Kitco also states it cannot give investment advice. Our gold IRA guide explains custodian fees and the IRS rules on approved coins and storage.
Is Kitco or APMEX cheaper?
On the Gold Eagle we checked, APMEX was 5.59% over spot by wire on October 11, 2026 and Kitco 3.89% on October 12. SD Bullion was lower at 3.33%. Kitco's random-year Eagle may be circulated, while the others were uncirculated, so compare like for like.
