Where to buy and sell gold in Sydney

By GoldVetted Editorial TeamLast updated Last fact-checked How we research
Quick answer

Sydney's main bullion counters sit in the CBD around Martin Place and Pitt Street. On 12 October 2026, Jaggards sold a 1oz Perth Mint Swan bar for A$6,171.88 paid by bank transfer or cash, 3.27% over spot, and A$6,279.89 by card. ABC Bullion's flagship is at 38 Martin Place. Investment gold has no GST.

In Sydney you can buy gold refined a few kilometres away: ABC Bullion's bars come from ABC Refinery in Marrickville, which is on the LBMA Good Delivery list. It is also home to Jaggards, which traces its history to 1963. Below are the counters we could verify, what buying in store saves, and where to sell and store.

Which gold dealers have a shop in Sydney?

Each dealer below has a Sydney address on its own website or on The Perth Mint's official list of approved bullion distributors. We give the street only. Several Sydney counters work by appointment, so check before you visit.

Does buying gold in a Sydney store cost less than delivery?

A gold price has two parts: the spot price, which is the wholesale value of pure gold, and the premium the seller adds. Buying over a Sydney counter removes a third cost, delivery. We captured single-item prices from each product page.

How we checked: Jaggards and KJC Bullion were captured automatically at about 11:19 UTC on 12 October 2026 (spot A$5,976.19 from gold-api.com). The Perth Mint and Ainslie Bullion were captured at 07:51 UTC (spot A$5,987.36). Delivery fees are as each dealer publishes them. ABC Bullion's site does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a premium for it. Later checks are on the premium tracker.

What this means for you: for a Sydney buyer paying by bank transfer, Jaggards' counter price matched the cheapest delivered options almost to the dollar, and you walk out with the bar. The A$108.01 gap between Jaggards' two prices matters far more than delivery, so decide how you will pay before you go. The KJC coin is a new-year Kangaroo, which usually costs more than a bar; it is not a like-for-like comparison, but it shows how much product choice moves the premium.

Posting still has its place. KJC says its shipping within Australia starts from A$1.95 per ounce of gold with door-to-door insurance included, subject to a A$40 minimum on bullion orders. ABC Bullion charges A$30 plus 1% insurance on orders under A$8,000, which is why its Martin Place showroom makes sense for small ABC orders. Jaggards' product page says the Swan bar is available to buy at its Sydney store, and its delivery is by priority courier with parcel insurance up to A$50,000. National prices are on our best places to buy gold in Australia page.

Where can you sell gold in Sydney?

Selling is where a Sydney counter helps most, because you avoid posting gold. The price will always be under spot. That gap between a dealer's buy and sell prices is the spread.

Jaggards' live buyback table was captured at 07:38 UTC (spot A$5,997.38) and Ainslie's estimator at 07:40 UTC (spot A$5,994.95). Ainslie's figure is indicative until the metal is received and tested.

Jaggards asks sellers for a physical driver's licence, or a passport plus a utility bill or bank statement. It pays cash on the spot for sales under A$5,000; larger amounts go by bank transfer, which can take up to 48 hours. Ainslie paid more in our snapshot, but from Sydney you would post the gold: verify ID online first, keep the parcel under A$25,000 and use Express Post with signature on delivery. The price is set when it arrives, not when you post it. Our guide to where to sell gold in Australia covers jewellery buyers and more dealers.

Where can you store gold in Sydney?

Sydney still has bank safe deposit boxes in the city, which is not true everywhere. CommBank's safe custody page, with availability as at 3 September 2026, listed:

CommBank safe custody vaults available, Sydney branches (3 September 2026)
BranchVaults available
48 Martin Place, CBD680
Pitt Street (Martin Place), CBD200
Sussex Street, Chinatown189

You need an eligible CommBank account and an in-person appointment. The page does not mention insurance of contents, so check your home or contents policy.

Westpac paused new safe custody sales in August 2022 and is moving customers of its 341 George Street vault to Guardian Vaults, a separate company. Among dealers, Guardian Gold runs vault storage at its Sydney site, Jaggards offers allocated storage at 0.5% a year for gold with a A$265 yearly minimum, and ABC Bullion operates private vaults in Sydney through its sister company Custodian Vaults. Our gold storage guide weighs a vault against a home safe.

Does New South Wales tax gold differently?

No. GST is federal, so the rule is the same in Sydney as in Perth: no GST on gold of 99.5% purity or more in bar, wafer or coin form. A profit when you sell may be a capital gain. Our Australian gold tax guide has the detail; we don't repeat it here.

How do you buy and sell gold safely in Sydney?

  • Check the buyer is licensed. In NSW, "gemstones and precious metals", including jewellery, are prescribed goods, so a business buying them second-hand needs a second-hand dealer licence from the state.
  • Expect ID checks. From 1 July 2026, AUSTRAC regulates bullion trades of A$10,000 or more paid in cash. Jaggards caps cash at A$10,000 in store.
  • Book ahead where the dealer asks. Royal Bullion works by appointment only, and KJC lets you book online. Reviews of ABC's Martin Place flagship mention queues.
  • Keep the invoice with product, weight, fineness and price; you will need it to work out any capital gain.
  • Buy sealed, recognised products. Our guide on how to tell if gold is real shows simple checks.

Frequently asked questions

Where is the best place to buy gold in Sydney?

On price, Jaggards' Pitt Street store was among the cheapest in our 12 October 2026 check: A$6,171.88 for a 1oz Perth Mint Swan bar paid by bank transfer or cash, 3.27% over spot. ABC Bullion's flagship at 38 Martin Place sells its own Sydney-refined bars, but its site does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a premium for it.

Is Martin Place the main place to buy gold in Sydney?

It is one hub. ABC Bullion's flagship is at 38 Martin Place, and CommBank's 48 Martin Place branch had 680 safe custody vaults available in September 2026. Jaggards (74 Pitt Street), KJC Bullion (12 O'Connell Street) and Guardian Gold (151 Castlereagh Street) are all within a short walk.

Where can I sell gold in Sydney?

Jaggards publishes a live buyback table and paid A$5,798.57 for a 1oz .9999 bar or coin on the morning of 12 October 2026, about 3.31% under spot. It pays cash on the spot for sales under A$5,000. ABC Bullion buys in its Martin Place showroom with no minimum once you open an account. See where to sell gold in Australia.

Why does Jaggards have two prices?

Jaggards shows a standard price and a lower discounted price for bank transfer and cash. On 12 October 2026 the gap on a 1oz Swan bar was A$108.01: A$6,171.88 by transfer or cash against A$6,279.89 by card. In the Sydney store you can also pay by EFTPOS from a savings account or cash up to A$10,000.

Do I pay GST on gold bought in Sydney?

Not on bars, wafers or coins of at least 99.5% gold in investment form. GST is a national tax, so New South Wales has no different rule, and the state adds no tax of its own on bullion. Jewellery and 22 carat coins can carry 10% GST. Read our Australian gold tax guide.

Can I get a safe deposit box in Sydney?

CommBank still offers safe custody vaults. On 3 September 2026 it listed 680 available at 48 Martin Place, 200 at its Pitt Street branch and 189 in Chinatown, but none at North Sydney, Chatswood or Parramatta. Westpac stopped new safe custody in August 2022 and is moving its George Street vault customers to Guardian Vaults.
