Where to buy and sell gold in Melbourne
Melbourne's bullion trade is concentrated on Collins Street in the CBD. On 12 October 2026, Ainslie Bullion sold a 1oz Perth Mint Swan bar for A$6,170.87, and collecting it from its Collins Street office was free. Melbourne Gold Company's posted counter price for a 1oz bar was A$6,261. Investment gold carries no GST.
Buying gold in person in Melbourne mostly means one walk: a few city blocks between Elizabeth and William streets hold almost every bullion counter in Victoria. This guide lists the dealers we could verify, puts a number on collecting versus delivery, and covers where to store and sell.
Which bullion dealers have a showroom in Melbourne?
We only list dealers whose Melbourne location appears on their own website or on The Perth Mint's official list of approved bullion distributors. We give the street, not opening hours, because hours change and some counters work by appointment. Check the dealer's site before you go.

The Perth Mint's list also names As Good As Gold Australia (257 Collins Street) and Bullion Traders Australia (227 Collins Street). Sources: dealer websites and The Perth Mint distributor list, checked 12 October 2026.
Notice how many names share 227 Collins Street. That makes comparing quotes in person unusually easy here: you can ask three counters for a price on the same 1oz bar within ten minutes. We have separate reviews of Ainslie Bullion, ABC Bullion, Melbourne Gold Company, Bullion Now and Guardian Gold.
Is it cheaper to collect in Melbourne or have gold delivered?
Two costs decide this: the premium (the amount above the spot price, which is the wholesale value of pure gold) and the delivery charge. A dealer with a Melbourne counter lets you skip the second. Here is what one 1oz bar cost a Melbourne buyer on 12 October 2026, using our own automated price captures.
| Option | Bar price | Premium | Delivery | Total |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ainslie Bullion, collect at 357 Collins Street (Perth Mint Swan minted bar) | A$6,170.87 | 3.06% | A$0 | A$6,170.87 |
| The Perth Mint online, delivered (1oz cast bar, no transit cover) | A$6,165.72 | 2.98% | A$17.50 | A$6,183.22 |
| Ainslie Bullion online, delivered to Melbourne (Swan bar) | A$6,170.87 | 3.06% | about A$52 | about A$6,223 |
| The Perth Mint online, delivered with 1.1% transit cover | A$6,165.72 | 2.98% | about A$85 | about A$6,251 |
| Melbourne Gold Company, counter price (1oz 999 bar, brand not stated) | A$6,261 | 4.76% | A$0 | A$6,261 |
How we checked: Ainslie and The Perth Mint prices were captured automatically from each product page at 07:51 UTC on 12 October 2026 (spot A$5,987.36 from gold-api.com). Melbourne Gold Company's price was captured from the rates table on its home page at 11:14 UTC (spot A$5,976.62), so the times differ. Delivery fees are as published: Ainslie A$15 plus 0.6% of value with insurance included (minimum A$31); The Perth Mint A$17.50 per kilo, cover optional at 1.1%. ABC Bullion's site does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a premium for it. See the premium tracker for later checks.
What this means for you: on a single bar, collecting from a Melbourne counter saved about A$52 against having the same bar posted. The Perth Mint's cheap freight narrows the gap only if you skip its optional insurance. ABC Bullion's published rate, A$30 plus 1% insurance on orders under A$8,000, works out at about A$92 on one bar, so its Melbourne showroom matters more if you buy from ABC. Melbourne Gold Company's posted counter price was higher, but its larger bars were keener: A$196,947 for 1kg, 2.49% over spot.
Insured delivery still makes sense if you live in the outer suburbs or regional Victoria and the trip costs more than A$50 in time and fares. Ainslie and The Perth Mint both require a signature, and Ainslie only ships to Australian addresses. National price comparisons are on our best places to buy gold in Australia page.
Where can you store gold in Melbourne?
Melbourne has a dedicated private vault in the CBD. The Melbourne Vault sits in the sub-basement of 257 Collins Street and offers document wallets, safe deposit boxes and bullion lockers, with storage advertised from A$2 a week. Ainslie Bullion holds its customers' allocated metal (specific bars recorded in your name) in its facility there, and it delivers free to The Melbourne Vault if you rent a box. That keeps your gold off the road between the shop and storage.
Guardian Gold also runs vault storage at its Melbourne site and says its online prices include insured freight to its own vaults. ABC Bullion's private vaults are in Sydney and Perth, not Melbourne, though its storage page says stored metal can be collected at any of its showrooms.
Bank boxes are harder to find in the city centre. CommBank's safe custody page (availability as at 3 September 2026) showed no vaults available at 385 Bourke Street or Kew, but hundreds in the suburbs: 1,021 at Glen Waverley, 724 at St Albans, 564 at Brighton, 499 at Bentleigh and 424 at Moonee Ponds. Westpac stopped selling safe custody in August 2022 and is moving its Collins Street vault customers to Guardian Vaults, a separate company. Banks do not say they insure box contents, so check your own policy. A home safe costs nothing to run, but many contents policies cap cover for bullion. Our gold storage guide compares the options.
Where can you sell gold in Melbourne?
Every dealer in the table above buys back gold, and two of them publish a number before you walk in. A buyback spread is the gap between what a dealer sells for and what it pays, so the price you get is always below spot.
| Buyer | Item | Price paid | vs spot |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ainslie Bullion (estimator) | 1oz gold | A$5,877.61 | -1.96% |
| Melbourne Gold Company | 1oz 999 gold bar or coin | A$5,828 | -2.49% |
| Melbourne Gold Company | 1kg 999 gold bar | A$187,404 | -2.47% |
| Melbourne Gold Company | 24ct jewellery, per gram | A$171.80 | 89.5% of gold value |
| Melbourne Gold Company | 9ct jewellery, per gram | A$64.49 | 89.5% of gold value |
Ainslie's estimate was captured at 07:40 UTC (spot A$5,994.95) and is confirmed only once the metal is received and tested. Melbourne Gold Company's posted rates were captured at 11:14 UTC (spot A$5,976.62). Jewellery percentages compare the rate with the spot value of the pure gold in one gram at that carat.
Melbourne Gold Company also lists fixed prices for coins, for example A$1,257 for a Sovereign and A$5,379 for a 1oz Krugerrand on the same capture. It says purity and weight tests are done in front of you. For bullion, Ainslie paid slightly more in our snapshot, and it accepts sales in store, from its storage, or straight from The Melbourne Vault. ABC Bullion buys in its showroom with no minimum, but you need an ABC account first. Our guide to where to sell gold in Australia adds postal buyers such as Jaggards in Sydney.
Is there any Victorian tax on gold?
No. GST is a national tax, and Victoria adds nothing of its own on bullion. Gold of at least 99.5% purity in bar, wafer or coin form is sold without GST; jewellery and 22 carat coins such as the Sovereign may carry 10%. A profit when you sell can be a capital gain. The detail is in our Australian gold tax guide.
How do you stay safe buying gold in person in Melbourne?
- Prefer bank transfer to cash. From 1 July 2026, AUSTRAC treats bullion trades of A$10,000 or more in cash as a regulated service, so expect ID checks. A transfer also gives you a record for tax.
- Bring photo ID when selling. Consumer Affairs Victoria says registered second-hand dealers must ask every seller for proof of identity and record it. A counter that does not ask is a warning sign.
- Get a tax invoice showing the product, weight, fineness and price, and keep it for when you sell.
- Know the CBD logistics. Most counters are on upper floors of office towers; Ainslie's page suggests parking at 333 Collins Street and walking through. Don't announce a purchase on the way out, and go straight to your vault or home.
- Check the product. Buy recognised brands in sealed packaging. Our guide on how to tell if gold is real explains simple checks.

Not on investment gold. GST is a national tax, so the rule is the same in Victoria as everywhere else: bars, wafers and coins of at least 99.5% gold in investment form carry no GST. Jewellery and 22 carat coins can. Victoria adds no separate tax on bullion. Our Australian gold tax guide explains GST and capital gains.
Can I store gold in a vault in Melbourne?
Yes. The Melbourne Vault, in the sub-basement of 257 Collins Street, offers safe deposit boxes and bullion lockers and advertises storage from A$2 a week. Ainslie Bullion holds allocated metal there and delivers free to it if you rent a box. Guardian Gold also offers vault storage at its Melbourne site.
What ID do I need to sell gold in Melbourne?
Consumer Affairs Victoria says registered second-hand dealers must ask every seller for proof of identity, such as a driver's licence or passport, and record it. Bullion dealers also check ID under AUSTRAC rules, especially for cash trades of A$10,000 or more. Take your licence and your original purchase invoice.
