Where to sell gold in Australia
In Australia, bullion dealers that publish buyback prices usually pay most. On 12 October 2026, Ainslie Bullion quoted A$5,877.61 for 1oz of gold, 1.96% below spot, and Jaggards A$5,798.57, 3.31% below. The Perth Mint buys bullion in person in East Perth and paid about 77% of melt value for jewellery.
Australia makes selling gold unusually transparent. Several big dealers put a live buyback price on their websites, and the Perth Mint, the government-owned refinery that makes most of the country's bars and Kangaroo coins, publishes what it pays per gram for old jewellery. That makes it easy to check an offer before you accept it. Below are the buyers worth knowing, the prices we captured on Monday 12 October 2026, and the GST, capital gains tax and AUSTRAC rules that apply when you sell.
Who buys gold in Australia?
What you hold decides who will pay most. Bars and coins of 99.99% gold from known refiners trade close to the spot price (the live market price of one troy ounce of pure gold). Jewellery is bought as scrap, because the buyer has to test and refine it.
| Buyer | How you sell | Payment | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ainslie Bullion | In store (Brisbane, Gold Coast, Melbourne), by post, or from storage | Cash or bank transfer in store; same day for metal in its storage | Bullion bars and coins | Posted price is locked only when the parcel arrives |
| Jaggards | Sydney CBD showroom or by post | Cash under A$5,000; otherwise bank transfer (up to 48 hours to clear) | Bars and coins up to 1oz (firm prices) | Prices above 1oz are indicative only |
| The Perth Mint | In person, East Perth bullion trading room | Bank transfer after 2 business days (jewellery 2 to 5) | Perth Mint products, nuggets, jewellery | Account and 100 points of ID needed first |
| ABC Bullion | Not checked | Not checked | Not checked | Its site does not allow automated price checks |
| Jeweller or cash-for-gold shop | Walk in | Usually on the spot | Small jewellery items | Bullion may be weighed in as scrap |
Terms from each seller's own website on 12 October 2026. ABC Bullion's website blocked our automated visit, so we do not publish a buyback price for it; see our ABC Bullion review and Ainslie vs ABC Bullion.
The Perth Mint
The Mint buys "Perth Mint-branded gold, silver, platinum and palladium coins and medallions, gold and silver legal tender coins, gold and silver bars and ingots and natural gold nuggets" at its East Perth shop. You register an account at the bullion desk with 100 points of ID, the metal is assessed, and the money arrives in your bank account after two business days. You can also put the proceeds straight into new bars or coins. It does not publish its bullion buy prices online, so ask for a quote on the day. More on its products and fees in our Perth Mint guide, and other local buyers in our Perth gold guide.
Ainslie Bullion
Ainslie, trading since 1974 according to its website, has stores in Brisbane, the Gold Coast and Melbourne and runs an online buyback estimator. Sellers can post bullion from anywhere in Australia if they verify their ID online first, keep each parcel under A$25,000 and use Express Post with signature on delivery. Ainslie says its insurance covers the parcel, so there is no need to insure it again. The price is fixed when the metal arrives, not when you post it. Read our Ainslie Bullion review.
Jaggards
Jaggards, which says it has more than 60 years in the trade, publishes a live buyback table from Pitt Street in the Sydney CBD. Prices are firm for gold products up to and including 1oz, subject to inspection, and indicative above that. Its standard is .9995 gold or better from LBMA-registered brands, but it also buys some 22 carat coins such as Krugerrands, Sovereigns and the Australian A$200 gold coin. See our Jaggards review.
What do Australian dealers pay compared with spot?
We captured each published price automatically on Monday 12 October 2026, during Perth trading hours, and compared it with spot from the same few minutes.
| Dealer and item | Dealer pays | Spot at the time | Below spot | vs spot |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ainslie Bullion, 1oz gold (estimator) | A$5,877.61 | A$5,994.95 | A$117.34 | -1.96% |
| Jaggards, 1oz gold .9999 | A$5,798.57 | A$5,997.38 | A$198.81 | -3.31% |
| Jaggards, 1g gold .9999 | A$186.43 | A$192.82/g | A$6.39 | -3.3% |
| The Perth Mint, bullion | Not published online; quoted in store | |||
GoldVetted automated capture, 12 October 2026: Jaggards' "Live Gold Bullion Buy Back Price" table at 07:38 UTC; Ainslie's buyback estimator set to 1 ounce of gold at 07:40 UTC (Ainslie notes its estimate is indicative and confirmed once the metal is received and verified). Spot from gold-api.com at 07:37 and 07:39 UTC. Ainslie's figure was exactly 98% of the A$5,997.56 spot shown on its own page.
A gap of about 1.35% between two big dealers is A$79 on one ounce and almost A$800 on ten. That is why a second quote is worth a phone call. Jaggards paid the same share of spot for a 1g bar as for 1oz, so on its list small bars did not suffer a worse rate.
What a round trip costs
On 11 October 2026, our check found the Perth Mint's 1oz cast bar at 2.86% over spot and Ainslie's Swan 1oz minted bar at 2.87% over. Add Ainslie's 1.96% buyback discount and the round trip on 1oz was close to 5% of its value, before postage or any change in the gold price. How much does the Perth Mint pay for gold jewellery?
The Perth Mint is one of the few Australian buyers to publish jewellery rates. We read them at 3:35 pm AWST on 12 October 2026 and compared each with the value of the gold in the alloy at spot.
| Carat (fineness) | Perth Mint pays per gram | Spot value of the gold per gram | Share of spot value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24k (999) | A$148.64 | A$192.63 | 77.2% |
| 22k (916) | A$136.29 | A$176.62 | 77.2% |
| 18k (750) | A$111.59 | A$144.62 | 77.2% |
| 14k (585) | A$87.04 | A$112.80 | 77.2% |
| 9k (375) | A$55.80 | A$72.31 | 77.2% |
Prices from the Perth Mint's "Sell your gold jewellery" page, timestamped 3:35:08 pm AWST. The Mint says website prices are indicative and finalised in store. Spot value is our arithmetic: gold-api.com spot of A$5,997.38 an ounce (A$192.82 a gram) at 07:37 UTC, times fineness. An earlier reading the same day, at 2:59 pm AWST, gave 9k A$55.77 to 24k A$148.58.
Compare that roughly 77% with the 96.7% to 98% that dealers offered for bullion in the table above. The difference is the cost of testing, melting and refining mixed jewellery. A 10 gram 18k chain, for example, would fetch about A$1,115.90 at the Mint's rate. Before you sell, weigh items separately by carat, and never include a bullion coin in a scrap lot. Our scrap gold guide explains how to estimate the value at home.
How do you sell gold in Australia, step by step?
Sort and record
Write down each bar or coin's maker, weight, fineness and year, and find your purchase invoice. You need the cost base for CGT, and some buyers ask where the item came from.
Work out spot value
Spot is ... an ounce right now (Loading). A 1oz Kangaroo holds one troy ounce of gold, so its spot value equals the spot price. Per gram, divide by 31.1035.
Verify your ID before you go
The Perth Mint needs 100 points of ID and an account; Jaggards asks for a physical driver's licence, or a passport with a second document; Ainslie asks postal sellers to verify online first.
Get two quotes
Use the online estimators, then call to confirm. Ask whether the price is firm or indicative and how it changes for larger amounts.
Sell in person or post it properly
Follow the buyer's posting rules exactly (parcel limits, Express Post, signature on delivery) and keep the receipt and tracking number.
Keep the sale record for five years
The ATO says CGT records should be kept for at least five years after the sale. Store the sale invoice with the purchase invoice.

What tax applies when you sell gold in Australia?
GST
None on investment gold. The ATO's ruling GSTR 2003/10 treats sales of "precious metal" (gold of at least 99.5% fineness in investment form, such as bars, wafers and bullion coins) after the refiner's first sale as input taxed, so no GST is added when you sell a Kangaroo or a .9999 bar back to a dealer. Jewellery and 22 carat coins are ordinary goods for GST, but a private individual selling personal items is not carrying on an enterprise, so no GST applies to your sale. GST you paid when buying a 22 carat coin is not refunded; it becomes part of your cost base.
Capital gains tax
| Situation | How the gain is treated |
|---|---|
| Resident individual, owned 12 months or more | 50% CGT discount, then the rest is added to income |
| Resident individual, owned under 12 months | Whole gain added to income |
| Complying super fund or SMSF, 12 months or more | One-third discount |
| Company | No CGT discount |
| Sold at a loss | Capital loss, set against capital gains now or later |
The ATO's CGT discount page says to exclude both the day you bought and the day you sold when counting the 12 months. Example: you bought a 1oz bar for A$4,200 in March 2025 and sell it to Ainslie for A$5,877.61 today. The gain is A$1,677.61; after the 50% discount, A$838.81 is added to your income. If you sold the same bar after 11 months, the full A$1,677.61 would be taxable. The ATO treats coins kept mainly for personal enjoyment as collectables, which have their own rules, so record why you bought each item. Our Australian gold tax guide covers this in detail, and SMSF trustees can read our guide to gold in an SMSF. This is general information, not tax advice.
Do you need ID, and what are the cash rules?
Australia tightened anti-money-laundering rules for bullion dealers in 2026. AUSTRAC, the financial intelligence agency, says that from 1 July 2026, buying or selling precious metals is a designated service when it "involves the transfer of physical currency or virtual assets" worth A$10,000 or more, including transactions that appear to be linked. Sales paid only by bank transfer or card are not caught. For a seller, that means:
- Identity checks first. Dealers providing the service must complete customer due diligence before the trade, which is why the Perth Mint, Jaggards and Ainslie all verify ID up front.
- Large cash is reported. AUSTRAC lists threshold transaction reporting for cash transactions of A$10,000 or more.
- No splitting. Breaking a sale into smaller cash amounts to stay under A$10,000 is structuring, and dealers must report reasonable suspicion of it to AUSTRAC.
For most people the practical answer is simple: take payment by bank transfer. Be wary of any buyer who offers a large cash sum with no ID check, and read our guide to gold scams before dealing with anyone unfamiliar.

Frequently asked questions
Where is the best place to sell gold in Australia?
For bullion, large dealers that publish buyback prices usually pay closest to spot. On 12 October 2026, Ainslie Bullion's estimator quoted A$5,877.61 for 1oz of gold (1.96% below spot) and Jaggards listed A$5,798.57 for a 1oz .9999 bar or coin (3.31% below). Get two quotes and compare the net amount after postage.
Does the Perth Mint buy back gold?
Yes, in person at its bullion trading room in East Perth. It buys Perth Mint coins and medallions, gold and silver legal tender coins, bars and ingots, and natural gold nuggets. First-time sellers open an account with 100 points of ID, and payment reaches your bank account after two business days. It also buys gold jewellery at published per-gram rates.
How much does the Perth Mint pay for gold jewellery?
At 3:35 pm AWST on 12 October 2026, the Perth Mint's indicative buy prices ran from A$55.80 a gram for 9k to A$148.64 a gram for 24k. In each case that was about 77% of the spot value of the gold in the item. Prices are finalised in store, and jewellery payment takes two to five business days.
Do I pay GST when I sell gold in Australia?
Not on investment gold. Under the ATO's GST ruling GSTR 2003/10, sales of precious metal (gold of at least 99.5% fineness in investment form) after the first sale by the refiner are input taxed, so no GST is added. A private individual selling jewellery or 22 carat coins is not carrying on a business, so no GST is charged either.
How much capital gains tax do I pay on gold in Australia?
A capital gain on gold is added to your assessable income and taxed at your marginal rate. If you are an Australian resident individual and owned the gold for at least 12 months, the ATO lets you reduce the gain by 50% first. Complying super funds get a one-third discount. See our Australian gold tax guide.
Can I sell gold for cash in Australia?
Yes, but large cash sales are regulated. From 1 July 2026, AUSTRAC treats buying or selling precious metals for A$10,000 or more in cash or virtual assets as a designated service, so the dealer must identify you and has reporting duties. Jaggards pays cash on the spot only for sales under A$5,000. Bank transfer is the norm for bigger sales.
Can I post gold to a dealer to sell it?
Several dealers accept posted bullion. Ainslie Bullion asks sellers to verify ID online, limit each parcel to A$25,000, and send it by Express Post with signature on delivery; it says it insures the parcel and locks the price when the metal arrives. Jaggards also buys by post after inspecting and testing the items.
