Monthly gold dealer premium tracker (original data)
In October 2026, the cheapest 1oz gold coin or bar we found cost 1.68% over spot (a Maple Leaf at Gold Stock Canada, paid by wire). The cheapest UK Britannia was 2.80% over spot, the cheapest US Eagle 3.33% and the cheapest Australian 1oz bar 2.86%. Paying by card added about 4 percentage points.
This page is GoldVetted's own data set: what real dealers charge for one popular gold coin or bar, compared with the value of the gold inside it, on a stated date and spot price. It updates every month, starting with this first report for October 2026.
- Countries: UK, US, Canada, Australia
- Dealers priced: 11 sellers, 22 buy prices, 2 buyback prices
- Check dates: 10 and 11 October 2026
- Spot source: gold-api.com
- Next update: November 2026
How do we measure gold premiums?
A premium is the extra you pay above the spot price, which is the wholesale market price for one troy ounce of pure gold. It is the part of the price that differs between dealers, so it is the fairest way to compare them. Our method is the same every month:
One item, the dealer's own page
We read the price for a single coin or bar (quantity 1) on the dealer's own product page. We do not use "from" prices, bulk tier prices or prices from comparison sites.
Payment method recorded
Where a dealer shows different prices for wire transfer and card, we record both. Where only one price is shown, we say which.
Spot price at the same time
We take the spot price in the matching currency from gold-api.com at the time of the check. The gold market was closed on both check dates (a Saturday evening and a Sunday), so prices were not moving during the checks.
One formula
Premium = price / (fine gold ounces x spot) - 1. A 1oz Britannia, Maple Leaf, Kangaroo or 1oz bar holds one troy ounce of pure gold. A 1oz American Eagle also holds one troy ounce of pure gold (in a heavier 22 karat coin). A full Sovereign holds 0.23542 troy ounces (7.3224 g).
Automated, monthly
Every price is captured automatically by script. If a dealer's site blocks automated checks, we do not publish a premium for it rather than estimate one.
Our wider dealer scoring is set out in how we review gold dealers. To check a quote of your own with the same formula, use the premium calculator.

What did the October 2026 data show?
| Country | Cheapest seller and product | Premium | Range found |
|---|---|---|---|
| Canada | Gold Stock Canada, Maple Leaf (wire) | 1.68% | 1.68% to 7.29% |
| UK | Chards, Britannia | 2.80% | 2.80% to 8.14% |
| Australia | The Perth Mint, 1oz cast bar | 2.86% | 2.86% to 4.80% |
| US | SD Bullion, American Eagle (wire) | 3.33% | 3.33% to 9.84% |
- The same coin can cost very different amounts. A 1oz Britannia ranged from 2.80% to 7.13% over spot across four UK sellers: a gap of £137.21 on one coin. Buying direct from the mint was the most expensive option in the UK.
- Paying by card costs about 4 points more. The card premium was 4.31 points higher than wire at SD Bullion (US$180.64 on one Eagle), 4.39 at APMEX, 3.81 at Gold Stock Canada and 4.13 at Canadian PMX. Jaggards' bank transfer discount was smaller, at 1.80 points.
- The round trip costs roughly 6% to 7%. Buying a Britannia from Chards for £3,259.95 and selling it to Hatton Garden Metals the next day for £3,067.15 would lose £192.80, or 5.91% of what was paid. Buying and selling both at Hatton Garden Metals would lose £214.04 (6.52%). For a Sovereign at Hatton Garden Metals the loss is £46.58 (6.07%). Gold has to rise by at least this much before a buyer breaks even. See gold dealer spreads.
- Mixed-year and "best value" coins were usually cheapest. The lowest UK Britannia and Sovereign prices, and the lowest Canadian Maple Leaf, were all for coins of mixed or random years rather than the current year.
Premiums are one cost among several. Delivery charges, insurance, sales tax (in some US states) and minimum order values also matter. Read gold premiums explained for what drives them.
Which dealers are not priced, and why?
| Dealer | Country | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| JM Bullion | US | Site does not allow automated price checks (returned an access error) |
| Money Metals Exchange | US | Site does not allow automated price checks |
| BullionByPost | UK | Product pages blocked our automated check; only "from" prices were visible, which we do not use |
| Silver Gold Bull | Canada | Site does not allow automated price checks |
| ABC Bullion | Australia | Site does not allow automated price checks |
Because these sites do not allow automated price checks, we do not publish a premium for them. Their absence says nothing about whether their prices are high or low. If a dealer's site allows automated checks in future, it will be added.

When is the next update?
The tracker updates monthly. October 2026 is the first monthly report, and each country also gets its own dated report page. Live spot is not a dealer price: add the premiums above to estimate what you would pay.
Frequently asked questions
What is a gold premium?
It is the amount a dealer charges above the spot price of the gold in a coin or bar, shown as a percentage. If a 1oz coin costs £3,259.95 when one ounce of gold is worth £3,171.03, the premium is 2.80%. It covers minting, handling, the dealer's costs and its profit. Read gold premiums explained.
Which country had the lowest gold premium in October 2026?
Canada. Gold Stock Canada sold a random-year 1oz Maple Leaf for CA$6,079.19 by wire on 11 October 2026, 1.68% over spot. The cheapest UK Britannia was 2.80% (Chards), the cheapest Australian 1oz product was 2.86% (Perth Mint cast bar) and the cheapest US Eagle was 3.33% (SD Bullion, wire).
How much more does paying by card cost?
In our October 2026 check, paying by card instead of wire added 4.31 percentage points at SD Bullion, 4.39 at APMEX, 3.81 at Gold Stock Canada and 4.13 at Canadian PMX. On a US$4,300 coin that is roughly US$180 extra. Jaggards in Australia showed a smaller gap of 1.80 points for bank transfer or cash.
Why are some big dealers missing from the tracker?
We only publish prices captured automatically from a dealer's own product page. JM Bullion, BullionByPost, Money Metals Exchange, Silver Gold Bull and ABC Bullion did not allow automated price checks when we tried, so we do not publish a premium for them. Being missing is not a judgement on their prices.
How often is the premium tracker updated?
Monthly. October 2026 is the first monthly report. Each update keeps the same products and method where possible, so you can compare one month with the next. Dates, times and the spot price used are shown under every table.
Can I use this data in an article or AI answer?
Yes, with a credit and a link to this page. Please quote the date and the spot price with any figure, because premiums change. A suggested citation line is given in the 'How to cite' section on this page.
