What is gold worth per ounce, gram and kilo in pounds?

UK dealers and jewellers quote in grams, while the wholesale market quotes in troy ounces. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, a little heavier than the everyday ounce you use in a kitchen. Bullion bars in Britain come in gram and kilo sizes as well as ounces, so it helps to see all three side by side. The pennyweight is an old jeweller's unit that some UK scrap buyers still use.

How much is 9ct, 18ct and 22ct gold worth in the UK?

Most gold that British people own is jewellery, and it is rarely pure. UK hallmarks show purity as parts per 1,000: 375 for 9ct, 585 for 14ct, 750 for 18ct and 916 for 22ct, with 990 and 999 for near-pure gold. Those six are the only gold standards UK assay offices hallmark, so 9ct (375) is the lowest. Any gold item over 1 gram sold in the UK as gold needs a hallmark from one of the four assay offices: London, Birmingham, Sheffield or Edinburgh (hallmarking guidance). The table multiplies the live price by each purity.

What are Sovereigns, Britannias and gold bars worth?

The gold in a UK coin is worth the same as the gold in any other coin of equal weight. What differs is the premium you pay on top, and whether the coin is free of Capital Gains Tax. Sovereigns are 22ct, so a full Sovereign weighs 7.98 g but holds 7.3224 g of pure gold. Modern Britannias are 999.9 fine and hold a full troy ounce. The table shows what the gold content alone is worth right now.

What will a UK dealer actually charge compared with spot?

The spot price is only the starting point. A dealer adds a premium to cover minting, insurance, stock and profit. We recorded single-coin prices on dealer sites on 10 October 2026, when spot was £3,171.03 an ounce. This is the GoldVetted price check, 10 October 2026, and our premium tracker keeps it up to date.

BullionByPost blocked our automated check on its product pages, so we do not publish a premium for it. Its category page showed a 1oz Britannia "from" £3,272 at the time.

How much will a UK dealer pay me back?

Selling is the other side of the gap. On the same evening, Hatton Garden Metals published these buy-back prices:

Dealer buy-back prices against gold value, 10 October 2026 (spot £3,171.03/oz)
Dealer and coinBuy-back priceAgainst gold value
Hatton Garden Metals, 1oz Britannia£3,067.15-3.28%
Hatton Garden Metals, Sovereign£720.90-3.43%

Buying a Britannia at 2.8% over spot and selling it at 3.3% under means the price has to rise by roughly 6% before you break even. That gap is called the dealer spread. Our UK dealer comparison shows who is cheapest overall.

If you want to compare current dealer prices yourself, Visit Chards showed the lowest 1oz Britannia premium in our check. Prices change through the day, so always confirm on the dealer's own page.

Does tax change the price I pay in the UK?

Yes, in two ways. There is no VAT on investment gold (HMRC Notice 701/21), so a bar or coin is priced close to spot, but gold jewellery includes 20% VAT, which is one reason a ring costs far more than its melt value.

Capital Gains Tax applies when you sell at a profit. HMRC treats Sovereigns minted from 1837 onwards and Britannias as sterling currency, which is exempt (CG78305). Gold bars and foreign coins such as Krugerrands are chargeable. For 2026 to 2027 the annual exempt amount is £3,000, and gains above it are taxed at 18% or 24% depending on your income. Details are in our UK gold tax guide. Gold held in an ISA or SIPP works differently, and those products can be regulated by the FCA; see gold in a SIPP or ISA.

Why does the gold price change during the day?

Gold trades almost around the clock, from Sydney through London to New York, so the price moves whenever buyers and sellers disagree. The main drivers are:

  • Interest rates. Gold pays no interest. When savings and bonds pay more, gold looks less attractive, and the reverse is also true.
  • The US dollar. Gold is priced in dollars, so a stronger dollar usually pushes it down.
  • The pound. This is the UK twist. If sterling falls against the dollar, the gold price in pounds rises even if the dollar price stays still.
  • Central bank buying. Governments that add gold to their reserves create steady demand.
  • Fear. Wars, banking stress and inflation worries send investors towards gold.
  • Jewellery and industry demand. This rises and falls with the seasons and with the price itself.

The market is usually shut from Friday evening to Sunday evening, so the price you see at the weekend is Friday's close. See the gold price history in GBP for longer trends.

What time is the gold price fixed in London?

London is the centre of the world's wholesale gold market, so UK readers get the benchmark on their own clock. What people still call "the London fix" is now the LBMA Gold Price, an electronic auction run by ICE Benchmark Administration. The auction is set in US dollars. The LBMA's price page also shows pounds and euros, which it describes as indicative prices for settlement (see the LBMA price page).

New York times convert from 6:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. US Eastern time on CME Globex and can shift by an hour for a few weeks a year when UK and US clocks change on different dates. Between auctions, our figure comes from a live spot feed. Our guide on how gold prices are set explains more.

How should I use the price when buying or selling?

  1. Check the live spot price above, then work out the gold value of the item with the gold value calculator.
  2. Divide the dealer's price by that value and take away one. That is the premium.
  3. Compare premiums across dealers, and include delivery and payment fees.
  4. When selling, ask for the buy-back price as a percentage of spot before you hand anything over.

Frequently asked questions

What is the gold price in the UK today?

The live figure is in the price box at the top of this page, in pounds per troy ounce, with the update time beside it. It is the spot price, the wholesale price for gold delivered now. It is not what a dealer will charge you for a coin, because dealers add a premium on top.

Why is the gold price in pounds different from the US dollar price?

Gold is traded worldwide in US dollars, then converted into pounds at the current exchange rate. So the pound price moves with gold itself and with the pound against the dollar. If the pound weakens, gold can rise in pounds even when the dollar price is flat.

How much is a gram of gold worth in the UK?

Divide the ounce price by 31.1035, the number of grams in a troy ounce. The table above does this live. The result is for pure 24ct gold. Jewellery is worth less per gram because it is mixed with other metals, for example 9ct is only 37.5% gold.

How much is 9ct gold worth per gram in the UK?

9ct gold is 37.5% pure, hallmarked 375. Its melt value per gram is the live gram price multiplied by 0.375, shown in the hallmark table on this page. Scrap buyers pay a share of that, so a 9ct chain is worth noticeably less than its melt value when sold. Compare a few quotes as a percentage of melt value before you sell.

How much is a Sovereign worth in pounds?

A full Sovereign holds 7.3224 g of fine gold, which is 0.23542 of a troy ounce. Multiply that by the live ounce price to get its melt value, shown in the coin table above. In our 10 October 2026 check, dealers sold new Sovereigns for 2.8% to 8.1% more than that.

Is the spot price what I get when I sell gold?

No. Buyers pay less than spot because they need to cover costs and make a profit. In our check on 10 October 2026, Hatton Garden Metals offered 3.28% below spot for a 1oz Britannia and 3.43% below the gold value of a Sovereign. Scrap and jewellery buyers usually pay a lower share of melt value than bullion dealers.

What time is the London gold fix?

The old "fix" is now the LBMA Gold Price, an electronic auction run by ICE Benchmark Administration at 10:30 and 15:00 London time on each London business day. It is set in US dollars, and the LBMA says its sterling and euro figures are indicative prices for settlement. Live prices between auctions come from continuous trading.

Do I pay VAT on gold in the UK?

Not on investment gold. HMRC Notice 701/21 exempts bars of at least 99.5% purity and coins minted after 1800 that are at least 90% pure, are or were legal tender, and normally sell for no more than 180% of their gold value. Gold jewellery includes 20% VAT. Capital Gains Tax is separate: Sovereigns (1837 onwards) and Britannias are exempt.
