Most people searching for the gram price in Britain are holding a piece of jewellery and wondering what it is worth. That is why this page leans on hallmarks and real scrap rates, not just the bullion price. UK jewellery is mostly 9ct, with 18ct common in engagement rings and 22ct in traditional wedding bands and South Asian gold. Each carat is worth a fixed share of the pure gram price.
How much is 9ct, 14ct, 18ct and 22ct gold worth per gram?
A UK hallmark states the gold content in parts per thousand. UK assay offices hallmark six gold standards: 375 (9ct), 585 (14ct), 750 (18ct), 916 (22ct), 990 and 999 (hallmarking guidance notes). Find that number on your item, then read across.
| Carat | Hallmark | Gold content | Melt value per gram | Melt value per 10g |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 24ct | 999 | 99.9% | ... | ... |
| 23.76ct | 990 | 99% | ... | ... |
| 22ct | 916 | 91.6% | ... | ... |
| 18ct | 750 | 75% | ... | ... |
| 14ct | 585 | 58.5% | ... | ... |
| 9ct | 375 | 37.5% | ... | ... |
Spot-based melt values. Loading. Hallmark figures are the legal minimum, so a 375 item contains at least 37.5% gold.
The hallmark rules also matter if a piece is unmarked. Gold items under 1 gram are exempt from compulsory hallmarking, but anything heavier sold in the UK as gold should carry a mark from London, Birmingham, Sheffield or Edinburgh. An unmarked heavier piece will be tested before a buyer pays for it. Our guide to gold hallmarks explains the symbols.
What do scrap gold buyers pay per gram in the UK?
A buyer melts and refines scrap, so it pays a share of melt value, not the full amount. Hatton Garden Metals, a London bullion dealer, publishes its scrap prices per gram. We recorded them on 11 October 2026 at 10:56 UTC.
| Carat | Scrap price per gram | Price per 10g | Share of melt value |
|---|---|---|---|
| 9ct (375) | £32.03 | £320.30 | about 83.8% |
| 14ct (585) | £49.96 | £499.60 | about 83.8% |
| 18ct (750) | £64.05 | £640.50 | about 83.8% |
| 22ct (916) | £78.23 | £782.30 | about 83.8% |
| 24ct (999) | £85.40 | £854.00 | about 83.8% |
Source: Hatton Garden Metals scrap gold prices, captured 11 October 2026, 10:56 UTC, a Sunday when the gold market was closed. Share of melt compares each rate with the gold content at spot of £3,171.03 an ounce. Rates change with the gold price.
Two points stand out. First, the same percentage applies to every carat, which makes the offer easy to check. Second, the gap between 9ct and 18ct is large: a 10g 9ct chain fetched about £320 at these rates, while the same weight in 18ct fetched about £640. Weighing and sorting by hallmark before you sell is worth the effort.
How do I check a scrap offer in seconds?
- Note the weight in grams and the hallmark of each item.
- Find the live melt value per gram for that hallmark in the table above.
- Divide the buyer's per-gram offer by that melt value. The result is the share of melt you are being offered.
- Compare at least two buyers on the same basis, and include any postage or testing fees.

What are 1g, 5g, 10g and 100g gold bars worth?
Gram bars let you buy investment gold in small amounts. Bars of at least 99.5% purity are free of VAT in the UK (HMRC Notice 701/21), unlike jewellery. The table shows the gold inside each size at today's price.
| Bar size | Troy ounces | Gold value at spot |
|---|---|---|
| 1g | 0.0322 | ... |

Grams or troy ounces: what is the difference?
The wholesale market prices gold per troy ounce of 31.1035g. The ordinary ounce on a kitchen scale is 28.35g, about 9.7% lighter. Dividing the ounce price by 28.35 by mistake makes every gram look nearly 10% more valuable than it is. UK jewellers and buyers work in grams, so convert once and stick to grams.

How much do UK dealers charge per gram of gold?
Buying is the mirror image of scrap. Dealers add a premium to spot. Converting their prices into pounds per gram of fine gold shows the real cost. This is the GoldVetted price check, 10 October 2026, for a single 1oz Britannia (one troy ounce of fine gold), when spot was £3,171.03 an ounce, or £101.95 a gram.
| Dealer | Coin price | Per gram of gold | Above spot per gram |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chards (best value, Minty) | £3,259.95 | £104.81 | £2.86 |
| Hatton Garden Metals | £3,281.19 | £105.49 | £3.54 |
| Atkinsons Bullion | £3,285.02 | £105.62 | £3.67 |
| The Royal Mint (2027 coin) | £3,397.16 | £109.22 | £7.27 |
On the selling side, Hatton Garden Metals' buy-back price for a 1oz Britannia that evening was £3,067.15, or £98.61 per gram, £3.34 below spot. Compare that with £85.40 per gram for 24ct scrap the next morning: a recognised coin sells back for far more per gram than the same gold as scrap. BullionByPost blocked our automated check, so we do not publish a figure for it. See our premium tracker for later checks.
To compare current per-gram costs yourself, Visit Chards had the lowest Britannia premium in our check, and Hatton Garden Metals publishes both its scrap and buy-back rates. Our guide to the best places to buy gold in the UK compares more dealers.
Does tax change the gram price in the UK?
For buying, VAT is the big one: none on investment bars and qualifying coins, 20% on jewellery. For selling, Capital Gains Tax may apply to gains above the annual exempt amount, but Sovereigns and Britannias are exempt because HMRC treats them as sterling currency (CG78305). Gram bars are not exempt. Details are in our UK gold tax guide.
The gram price moves in step with the ounce price and with the pound against the dollar. Long-run figures are in our gold price history in GBP. This page is information, not financial advice, and gold can fall as well as rise.
Frequently asked questions
What is the price of 1 gram of gold in the UK today?
One gram of pure gold is worth the troy ounce price in pounds divided by 31.1035. The live figure is at the top of this page. On 10 October 2026, with spot at £3,171.03 an ounce, a gram of pure gold was worth about £101.95. Jewellery is worth less per gram because it is an alloy.
How much is 9ct gold per gram in the UK?
9ct gold is 37.5% pure, hallmarked 375, so its melt value per gram is the live gram price multiplied by 0.375. Buyers pay less than melt. On 11 October 2026, Hatton Garden Metals published a scrap price of £32.03 per gram for 9ct, about 84% of its melt value at the time.
How much is 18ct gold worth per gram?
18ct gold is 75% pure, hallmarked 750, so a gram is worth three quarters of the pure gram price at melt. The karat table on this page shows it live. On 11 October 2026, Hatton Garden Metals' published scrap rate for 18ct was £64.05 per gram.
What percentage of the gold price do scrap buyers pay?
It varies by buyer. Hatton Garden Metals' published rates on 11 October 2026 worked out at about 83.8% of melt value for every karat. Some high street and postal buyers pay less. Divide any per-gram offer by the melt value per gram for that carat to find the percentage.
Is there VAT on gold bought by the gram?
Not on investment gold. HMRC Notice 701/21 exempts gold bars of at least 99.5% purity, so a 1g or 10g bar from a recognised refiner carries no VAT. New gold jewellery includes 20% VAT, which is one reason a ring costs far more per gram than its gold is worth.
Why does a 1 gram gold bar cost more per gram than a 1oz coin?
Making, assaying and packing a 1g bar costs almost as much as making a much larger bar, but the cost is spread over only one gram of gold. So the premium per gram is much higher on tiny bars. Divide the bar price by its weight to compare it with a Britannia.
Do UK jewellers have to hallmark gold?
Any item sold in the UK and described as gold must be hallmarked by one of the four UK assay offices (London, Birmingham, Sheffield or Edinburgh) unless it weighs under 1 gram. The hallmark shows the fineness, such as 375 for 9ct or 750 for 18ct, which is what sets its value per gram.
