What is gold worth per ounce, gram and kilo in dollars?
The US market quotes gold per troy ounce, but Americans also meet it in other units. Scrap buyers and pawn shops often talk in pennyweights and grams, and international bars come in grams and kilos. Mixing up a regular ounce (28.35 g) with a troy ounce (31.1035 g) is a classic beginner error that costs real money, so use the troy figures below.

How much is 10k, 14k and 18k gold worth?
American jewelry is usually 10k, 14k or 18k, marked with a stamp such as 14K or 585. Under the FTC Jewelry Guides, a karat stamp must sit right before the word "gold", and the federal stamping law allows a tolerance of only 3 parts per thousand (7 where solder is used), so a genuine 14K piece is very close to 58.3% gold (16 CFR 23.3). Pieces sold abroad may be 22k or 9k. The table multiplies the live price by each purity, which gives the melt value before a buyer takes their cut.
| Karat | Fine gold | Melt value per gram | Melt value per troy oz of item |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24k (bars, Buffalo coins) | 99.9%+ | ... | ... |
| 22k (Gold Eagle alloy) | 91.7% | ... | ... |
| 18k (750) | 75% | ... | ... |
| 14k (585) | 58.3% | ... | ... |
| 10k (417) | 41.7% | ... | ... |
A buyer pays only part of melt value. Use the gold value calculator to enter your own weight, and see what 24 karat gold means.
What are American Eagles, Buffalos and gold bars worth?
US coins have an odd quirk. The American Gold Eagle is 22 karat (91.67% gold), so the 1 oz coin weighs 1.0909 troy ounces (33.931 g) in total, but the US Mint guarantees it contains one troy ounce of pure gold. The American Gold Buffalo is 24 karat, .9999 fine. Pre-1933 $20 Double Eagles are 90% gold and hold 0.9675 oz. The table shows the gold inside each, at today's price.

What will a US dealer actually charge compared with spot?
The difference between spot and the sticker price is the premium. US dealers usually give a discount for paying by bank wire or check, because cards cost them a fee. This is the GoldVetted price check, 10 October 2026, when spot was $4,195.60 an ounce, for a single 1 oz American Gold Eagle (random year).
| Dealer | Wire price | Wire premium | Card price | Card premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SD Bullion | $4,335.39 | 3.33% | $4,516.03 | 7.64% |
| APMEX | $4,424.29 | 5.45% | $4,608.64 | 9.84% |
Paying by wire rather than card saved about $181 to $184 on one coin. The gap between the two dealers was $88.90 on a wire payment. JM Bullion does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a premium for it. See the best places to buy gold in the US and our premium tracker.
Dealers mentioned in our check include Visit SD Bullion and APMEX. Prices move all day, so confirm on the dealer's page before you pay.
Does tax change what I pay or keep in the US?
Two layers apply. State sales tax on bullion depends entirely on where you live and what you buy, with some states exempting it and others charging it on coins. Federal tax comes later: the IRS says net gains on collectibles "such as coins" are taxed at a maximum 28% rate (IRS Topic 409), higher than the usual long-term rate on stocks, and gold held a year or less is taxed as ordinary income. See the US gold tax guide for your state and the current rules.
Why does the gold price change during the day?
Gold trades from Sunday evening to Friday evening US time, as the action moves from Asia to London to New York. Prices shift when traders reassess:
- Federal Reserve expectations. Lower interest rates make non-interest-paying gold more attractive.
- The dollar. A weaker dollar tends to lift gold, as it makes it cheaper for buyers using other currencies.
- Inflation and jobs reports. Big US data releases often cause sharp short moves.
- Central banks. Reserve purchases by governments add steady demand.
- Fear. Geopolitical shocks and market stress send money towards gold.
Weekend quotes just repeat Friday's close. For the longer picture, see gold price history in USD.
When is the gold market open in the US?
The US reference for the gold spot price is COMEX gold futures, traded electronically on CME Group's Globex platform, alongside the LBMA Gold Price auction in London. Spot quotes are built from these markets, so they stay within a few dollars of each other. CME lists gold futures trading from Sunday to Friday, 6:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. Eastern time, with a one-hour break each afternoon (CME gold fact card).
| Event | Eastern time | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Weekly open (CME Globex) | Sunday 6:00 p.m. | Spot starts moving after the weekend |
| LBMA Gold Price, morning auction | 5:30 a.m. (10:30 London) | Global benchmark price |
| LBMA Gold Price, afternoon auction | 10:00 a.m. (15:00 London) | London and New York both open: most trading |
| Daily break | 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. | Quotes pause briefly |
| Weekly close | Friday 5:00 p.m. | Weekend quotes repeat this price |
London times convert to Eastern time with a five-hour gap for most of the year; for a few weeks in March and in October to November the gap is four hours because clocks change on different dates. Read how the LBMA publishes its price or our guide to how gold prices are set.
Why is the spot price on one site different from another?
Small differences are normal. Spot is quoted as a bid (what buyers will pay) and an ask (what sellers want), and some sites show the bid, some the ask and some the midpoint. Feeds also update at different speeds. A gap of a few dollars an ounce is nothing to worry about. A dealer's "spot" figure is only a reference: what matters is the final price you pay for the coin or bar, which is why we show the premium in dollars and percent above.
How should I use the price when buying or selling?
- Work out the gold content in troy ounces, then multiply by the live spot price.
- Compare the dealer's total price with that number to find the premium.
- Price the same coin at two or three dealers, using the cheapest payment method.
- When selling, ask what percentage of spot the buyer will pay, in writing.
This is information, not advice. Gold can fall as well as rise, and no one can promise a return.
Frequently asked questions
What is the spot price of gold today?
The live spot price is in the box at the top of this page, in US dollars per troy ounce, with the time it was last updated. Spot is the wholesale price for gold delivered now. Coin and bar dealers charge more than spot, and the gap is called the premium.
How much is an ounce of gold worth in dollars?
One troy ounce of pure gold is worth the live spot price shown above. A troy ounce is 31.1035 grams, slightly more than a regular ounce. A 1 oz American Gold Eagle holds exactly one troy ounce of gold, even though it is 22 karat, because the coin weighs more than an ounce in total.
How much is 14k gold worth per gram?
14 karat gold is 58.33% pure, often stamped 14K or 585. Multiply the live per-gram spot price by 0.5833 to get the melt value, which the karat table on this page shows live. Pawn shops and scrap buyers pay only part of that figure, so ask what percentage of melt value they offer before you sell.
Why do dealers charge more than the spot price?
Spot covers raw gold only. A dealer also pays for minting, shipping, insurance and storage, and needs a profit. In our 10 October 2026 check, a 1 oz American Gold Eagle cost 3.33% above spot at SD Bullion and 5.45% at APMEX when paying by wire, and more when paying by card.
Is gold sales tax free in the US?
It depends on the state. The federal government charges no sales tax, but states set their own rules, and many exempt gold bullion above a certain value while others charge sales tax on coins. Check your state's revenue department, or see our US gold tax guide, before you order.
How is profit on physical gold taxed in the US?
The IRS lists coins among collectibles, and physical gold bullion is generally taxed the same way. A net gain on gold held for more than a year is taxed at a maximum rate of 28%, not the lower long-term rates that apply to stocks. Gold held for a year or less is taxed as ordinary income. Ask a tax professional about your own situation.
Is the gold spot price the same as the COMEX futures price?
Not exactly. Spot is the price for gold delivered now. COMEX futures, traded on CME Group in New York, are prices for delivery on a future date, so they usually sit a little above spot to reflect interest and storage costs. Most websites build their spot quote from the nearest futures contract and the London market, so the two move together.
