Gold price per gram in the US today (USD)
The live price of one gram of pure gold in US dollars is shown below: it is the troy ounce spot price divided by 31.1035. On 10 October 2026, spot of $4,195.60 an ounce meant $134.89 per gram. A 14k gram is worth about 58% of that, and dealers charge more per gram than spot.

This is the spot price for pure gold, converted to grams. It is a melt value, not a dealer price. New to the term? Read what the spot price means. For ounce and kilo prices, see the main gold price today in USD page.
Gold is traded worldwide by the troy ounce, yet most of the gold Americans actually hold is weighed in grams. A jeweler weighs your ring in grams, a refinery quotes per gram, and small bars from refiners such as PAMP and Valcambi are sold as 1 g, 5 g or 10 g pieces. This page converts the live market price into those gram figures and shows how far real prices sit from them.
How much is gold worth per gram for 24k, 22k, 18k, 14k and 10k?
Karat tells you how many parts in 24 are pure gold. A 14k chain is 14 parts gold and 10 parts other metals such as copper, silver or zinc. To get the melt value of one gram, multiply the pure gram price by the gold fraction. The table does that live.

Why is 10k the lowest karat sold as gold in America?
The Federal Trade Commission's Jewelry Guides say it is deceptive to call an item "gold" if its alloy is under 10 karat, and they require any karat mark to be accurate. The National Gold and Silver Stamping Act allows only a small tolerance on a stamped piece (16 CFR Part 23). So 10k is the floor for US jewelry. You may still own 9k pieces, stamped 9K or 375, bought in the UK, Ireland or Australia, where 9 carat is a standard grade. They contain real gold and are valued the same way: 37.5% of the pure gram price.
What about gold-filled and gold-plated items?
Stamps such as GF (gold filled), GP or GEP (gold plated) and HGE (heavy gold electroplate) mean only a thin layer of gold over another metal. Their gold content per gram is tiny, so the karat table above does not apply. Most buyers will not pay melt prices for them.
What are 1 g, 5 g, 10 g and 100 g gold bars worth?
Gram bars are the entry point to physical gold for many buyers because they cost less in total than a 1 oz coin. The table shows the value of the gold inside each common size at the live price. Bars from accredited refiners are at least 99.99% pure, so we use the full gram price.

Grams or troy ounces: which unit should I use?
Use troy ounces when comparing bullion prices, because dealers and the market quote that way. Use grams for jewelry, scrap and small bars. The problem is that "ounce" means two different things:
| Unit | Grams | Where you see it |
|---|---|---|
| Troy ounce (ozt) | 31.1035 | Spot price, coins, bullion bars |
| Regular (avoirdupois) ounce | 28.3495 | Kitchen and postal scales: never used for gold prices |
| Pennyweight (dwt) | 1.5552 | Some US jewelers and scrap buyers |
| Grain | 0.0648 | Old jewelry and dental gold records |
| Kilogram | 1,000 | Large bars, central bank holdings |
Conversion factors from NIST Handbook 44, Appendix C. One troy ounce is exactly 31.1034768 g.
A troy ounce is about 9.7% heavier than a regular ounce. If a buyer weighs your gold on a kitchen scale set to ounces and multiplies by the troy price, the numbers will not match. Ask for the weight in grams. If an offer is quoted per pennyweight, divide it by 1.5552 to get the per-gram figure, then compare it with the karat table.

How much do you really pay per gram when buying gold?
No dealer sells gold at spot. The extra is the premium, which pays for minting, shipping and the dealer's margin. Turning a dealer's price into a cost per gram of fine gold makes any product easy to compare. This is the GoldVetted price check, 10 October 2026, for a single 1 oz American Gold Eagle (which holds exactly one troy ounce of gold, per the US Mint), when spot was $4,195.60 an ounce, or $134.89 a gram.
| Dealer and payment | Coin price | Per gram of gold | Above spot per gram |
|---|---|---|---|
| SD Bullion, wire | $4,335.39 | $139.39 | $4.50 |
| APMEX, wire | $4,424.29 | $142.24 | $7.35 |
| SD Bullion, card | $4,516.03 | $145.19 | $10.30 |
| APMEX, card | $4,608.64 | $148.17 | $13.28 |
Per gram, the cheapest option in our check cost $4.50 over spot and the dearest $13.28, a difference of nearly three times. Paying by wire made the biggest difference. JM Bullion does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a figure for it. Our premium tracker repeats the check over time.
Small gram bars usually cost more per gram than a 1 oz coin, because the fixed cost of making and packaging a bar is shared over less gold. Before buying a 1 g or 5 g bar, divide its price by its weight in grams and compare the result with the figures above.
To compare current prices per gram yourself, Visit SD Bullion had the lowest 1 oz Eagle premium in our check, and APMEX lists a wide range of gram bars. Our guide to the best places to buy gold in the US compares more dealers.
What do jewelers and dealers pay per gram?
Selling turns the maths around. What you get depends mostly on what you are selling:
| What you sell | How it is priced | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Bullion coins and bars | Close to spot, often a little below | Easy to resell, purity is known |
| Gold jewelry (scrap) | A percentage of melt value per gram | Must be tested and refined; stones and solder add cost |
| Dental gold and mixed scrap | Lower percentage, after testing | Purity varies and is not stamped |
A fair scrap buyer will tell you the weight in grams, the karat they recorded and the price per gram before you agree. You can check that price against the live karat table: divide their per-gram offer by the melt value per gram for that karat to see what percentage of melt you are being offered. Get two or three quotes. More detail is in our guides to selling scrap gold and selling gold in the US.
Tax may apply when you sell at a profit. The IRS treats coins as collectibles, and physical gold bullion is generally taxed the same way, at a maximum 28% rate on long-term gains (IRS Topic 409). Sales tax on buying depends on your state: see our US gold tax guide.
Has the price per gram changed much over time?
Yes. Because the gram price is just the ounce price divided by 31.1035, it rises and falls exactly in line with the ounce price, minute by minute while markets are open. Weekend figures repeat Friday's close. For long-run trends, see our gold price history in USD. This page is information, not financial advice. Gold can fall as well as rise.
Frequently asked questions
How much is 1 gram of gold worth today in dollars?
One gram of pure gold is worth the troy ounce spot price divided by 31.1035. The live figure is at the top of this page. On 10 October 2026, with spot at $4,195.60 an ounce, that worked out to about $134.89 per gram. Jewelry is worth less per gram because it is not pure gold.
How much is 14k gold worth per gram?
14k gold is 58.3% gold, so its melt value per gram is the live gram price multiplied by 0.583. The karat table on this page does the sum live. A jeweler, pawn shop or refiner buying 14k scrap will pay less than that melt figure, so ask what share of melt value they offer.
How many grams are in an ounce of gold?
A troy ounce, the unit used for gold, is 31.1035 grams. A regular kitchen ounce is only 28.35 grams. If you divide the gold price by 28.35 instead of 31.1035, you overstate the value of a gram by about 9.7%, which is a common mistake when checking a scrap offer.
Is 9k gold real gold in the US?
9k gold (37.5% gold) is real gold alloy and is common in the UK, but under the FTC Jewelry Guides it may not be marketed in the US as gold, because the word gold is reserved for alloys of at least 10 karat. You will usually see 9k on imported or antique pieces stamped 375.
Why does a 1 gram gold bar cost so much more than the per-gram price?
Making, assaying and packaging a 1 gram bar costs almost as much as making a 10 gram bar, but the cost is spread over only one gram of gold. So the premium per gram is far higher on tiny bars. Bigger bars and 1 oz coins usually cost less per gram of gold.
What do dealers pay per gram when I sell gold?
Bullion dealers buy coins and bars close to spot, often a few percent below. Jewelry and scrap are bought at a lower share of melt value because they must be refined. Ask the buyer for a per-gram price for each karat, then compare it with the live melt values on this page.
Do I pay sales tax on gold bought by the gram?
It depends on your state, not the weight. Some states exempt bullion entirely, some exempt it above a set dollar amount and some tax it. Jewelry is normally taxed like any other retail purchase. Check your state revenue department or our US gold tax guide before you buy.
