Costco gold in Canada: what you can buy and what it costs

By GoldVetted Editorial TeamLast updated Last fact-checked How we research
Quick answer

Costco Canada sells gold only occasionally, to members, online. On 12 October 2026 the only gold item we found on costco.ca was a 1/20 oz Royal Canadian Mint collector coin at CA$399.99, out of stock. Costco gold cannot be returned and is not sold in Manitoba or the territories.

Costco's gold bars made headlines in the United States, and Canadian members have been asking ever since whether they can do the same. The short version: Costco Canada has sold gold bars and Maple Leafs before, but not as a steady range, and the rules are stricter than for almost anything else in the warehouse. Here is what costco.ca actually listed when we checked, the conditions attached, and how to judge a Costco price against a Canadian bullion dealer.

Can you still buy gold at Costco in Canada?

Sometimes. Costco Canada's gold appears in short runs, often sells out, and then disappears. We searched costco.ca's product pages and product index on 12 October 2026 and found one gold item. Here is that item alongside the gold Costco Canada has offered before, from reliable sources.

The 2023 bar price reflects the gold price at that time, not today's. The Mint said in 2024 that its single-mine Maple Leaf was "available at select Costco stores across Canada, as well as online at www.costco.ca", with Costco members getting "the first opportunity" to buy it. We did not find either product listed on costco.ca in October 2026.

Costco's US site has carried a wider range of 1 oz bars; see our guide to Costco gold bars in the US. The Canadian range on costco.ca is separate and much smaller.

What are Costco Canada's rules for buying gold?

The costco.ca gold listing we checked sets out these conditions. Earlier gold products have carried similar terms, but Costco changes them, so read the listing before you order.

In 2023, Global News reported a limit of two bars per member every seven days, the same Manitoba restriction, and extra UPS delivery fees for the territories. Limits have changed between products.

Why can you not return it?

Gold's price moves every minute. If buyers could return a coin after the price fell, the retailer would carry all the risk, so Costco treats precious metals as final sale. In practice, your only exit is to sell to a dealer, a bank that buys back metal, or a private buyer. Our guide to selling gold in Canada explains how buyback prices work. We found no buyback service for gold on costco.ca.

How do you pay?

Costco shows one price on its gold listings, whatever card you use. That is a real difference from bullion dealers, most of which charge more for cards: on 11 October 2026, Gold Stock Canada's card price for a 1 oz Maple Leaf was CA$227.97 higher than its wire price. Costco's own credit card in Canada is the CIBC Costco Mastercard.

Is Costco gold cheaper than buying from a Canadian dealer?

The fair way to judge any gold price is its premium: how much you pay above the spot price, the live market value of the gold inside. We worked out the premium on the costco.ca coin and set it beside our latest Maple Leaf checks.

Costco Canada vs a dealer and a bank: price over the value of the gold
Seller and productDatePriceGold value at spotPremium
Gold Stock Canada: 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf, random year (wire)11 Oct 2026CA$6,079.19CA$5,978.731.68%
TD Precious Metals: 1 oz Gold Maple Leaf (2026)12 Oct 2026CA$6,191.98n/a3.82%
Costco.ca: 1/20 oz 2026 Lucky Dragon collectible coin (out of stock)12 Oct 2026CA$399.99CA$298.4134.04%

How we checked: the Costco price was read automatically from the costco.ca product page at 07:37 UTC on 12 October 2026, with spot at CA$5,968.27/oz (gold-api.com). The coin holds 1/20 troy oz of 99.99% gold, so its gold value is 0.05 x spot. Costco's price includes shipping; dealer prices may not, though Gold Stock Canada ships free over $500. The Costco coin is a small collector piece, so it is not a like-for-like match with a 1 oz bullion coin. See the premium tracker for more checks.

Two lessons come out of this. First, small coins carry big premiums everywhere, because minting and packaging cost about the same whether a coin holds 1/20 oz or 1 oz. Second, a collector coin is priced for its design and mintage, not just its gold. When Costco does list a 1 oz bar or Maple Leaf, compare it with a dealer's price for the same product on the same day, with shipping included and paid the way you plan to pay.

Does the Executive Reward change the maths?

Costco Canada pays Executive Members an annual 2% Reward on qualified purchases, up to CA$1,250 in any 12-month period, and says terms and exclusions apply. If gold counted, a CA$6,000 coin would earn CA$120 back, worth about 2 percentage points of premium. We could not confirm on costco.ca whether precious metals are qualified purchases, so treat that as a possible bonus, not part of the price. The CA$65 upgrade from Gold Star to Executive also eats into it unless you would upgrade anyway.

Is buying gold at Costco Canada worth it?

In Costco's favour

  • Products come from known makers such as the Royal Canadian Mint and PAMP
  • Insured shipping included in the price
  • Same price whatever card you use
  • Possible 2% Executive Reward, if gold qualifies

Against

  • Rarely in stock, and the range is tiny
  • Membership needed
  • No returns, no cancellations, no buyback
  • Not sold in Manitoba or the territories
  • Strict limits per individual

For most Canadians who simply want gold at a low premium, an online dealer with a steady range and a stated buyback policy is the more predictable route. Costco makes most sense for a member who spots a specific product they want and whose price holds up against a dealer's on the same day. Our Costco Canada review goes deeper, and TD vs Costco gold compares the two most familiar non-dealer options. TD and CIBC's offers are in our guide to buying gold from Canadian banks.

What about GST and HST on Costco gold?

Under the Excise Tax Act, gold bars, ingots, coins and wafers refined to at least 99.5% are "precious metals", and buying them is a GST/HST-exempt financial service. That covers 1 oz bars and the Maple Leaf, which is 99.99% pure (see our Gold Maple Leaf guide). Costco labels its Lucky Dragon coin a "collectible coin", and collector items can be taxed differently even when the metal is pure, so look at the tax line at checkout. Selling at a profit is a separate question: for most buy-and-hold owners, half of a capital gain is taxable. Our Canadian gold tax guide covers both.

How to check a Costco gold deal, step by step

  1. Note the exact product: weight, purity, maker and whether it is bullion or a collectible.
  2. Check live spot in CAD and multiply by the fine gold weight to get the gold value.
  3. Work out Costco's premium: price / gold value - 1. Shipping is already included.
  4. Get a dealer quote for the same or closest product, including shipping and your payment method.
  5. Remember the exit: no returns at Costco, so check what dealers pay to buy that item back.

Frequently asked questions

Does Costco Canada sell gold bars?

It has in the past. Global News reported in September 2023 that costco.ca sold 1 oz PAMP Suisse bars at CA$2,679.99, two per member every seven days. When we checked costco.ca on 12 October 2026, the only gold item we could find was a 1/20 oz Royal Canadian Mint collector coin, marked out of stock. Stock changes often.

Can I buy gold at Costco Canada without a membership?

Generally no. Costco.ca says non-members cannot buy member-only items and pay a 5% surcharge on other orders. A Gold Star membership costs CA$65 a year and an Executive membership CA$130, plus sales tax. Precious metals listings also set limits per individual, so one membership does not let you buy unlimited coins.

Can I return gold bought at Costco Canada?

No. The costco.ca gold listing we checked says the item cannot be returned or refunded and is not eligible for cancellation, price adjustments or promotions. That is very different from Costco's usual returns promise. If you change your mind, you would have to sell the gold to a dealer, usually at a price below what you paid.

Can I buy Costco gold in Manitoba?

Not from costco.ca, based on the listing we checked. It says the item is not available for purchase in Manitoba, Yukon, Nunavut or the Northwest Territories. Global News reported the same Manitoba restriction for Costco's gold bars in 2023. Buyers there can use online dealers that ship across Canada; see our Winnipeg gold guide.

Is Costco gold cheaper than a Canadian dealer?

Compare the exact item. On 12 October 2026 the 1/20 oz collector coin on costco.ca was priced 34.04% above the value of its gold. On 11 October, Gold Stock Canada sold a 1 oz Maple Leaf at 1.68% over spot by wire. Small and collector coins always carry higher premiums, so the fair test is the same product at both.

Do I pay GST or HST on Costco gold?

Gold bars and government-issued coins at least 99.5% pure are exempt from GST/HST wherever you buy them, under the Excise Tax Act. Costco describes its 2026 Lucky Dragon coin as a collectible, and collector items can be treated differently, so check the tax line at checkout. Our Canadian gold tax guide explains the rules.

Does gold count toward the Costco Executive 2% Reward?

Costco Canada pays Executive Members a 2% Reward on qualified purchases, capped at CA$1,250 a year, and says exclusions apply. We could not confirm on costco.ca whether precious metals qualify, so ask Costco before counting on it. On a CA$6,000 coin, 2% would be CA$120, if it applies.
