Costco gold bars: what you can buy, the limits and how the price compares
Yes, Costco sells gold bars, but only online and only to members. In October 2026 it listed 1 oz, 999.9 fine bars from PAMP and Rand Refinery, limited to 4 per 24 hours per membership. They cannot be returned and Costco does not buy them back, so price your exit before you buy.
Costco began selling gold bars in 2023, and they sold so fast that its then chief financial officer said in an earnings call that they were "typically gone within a few hours" after going on the website (MINING.COM). Wells Fargo analysts later estimated Costco was selling $100 million to $200 million of gold a month, according to Money. This guide sets out what Costco actually offers, the rules that come with it, and how a Costco bar compares with buying from a bullion dealer.
What gold does Costco sell?
Costco's gold range is narrow: one-ounce bars from two large refiners, plus occasional one-ounce coins. These are the bars we found listed on costco.com on 11 October 2026.
| Bar | Refiner and origin | Weight and purity | Packaging |
|---|---|---|---|
| PAMP Suisse Lady of Liberty (item 1943074) | PAMP, Switzerland | 1 troy oz, 999.9 (24k) | Sealed CertiPAMP assay card with certificate |
| PAMP Bald Eagle, "America the Free" series (item 1929992) | PAMP, Switzerland | 1 troy oz, 999.9 (24k) | CertiPAMP assay card, proof-like finish |
| Rand Refinery (item 1943085) | Rand Refinery, South Africa | 1 troy oz, 999.9 (24k) | Sealed assay card with serial number and RandTrack QR certificate |
Source: Costco product pages. The Rand Refinery bar was marked out of stock when checked. Costco's site also showed a PAMP "Good Luck Yellow Dragon" 1 oz bar in search results. Designs rotate, so expect different names over time.
Costco describes both PAMP and Rand Refinery as LBMA Good Delivery refiners. That means they are accredited by the London Bullion Market Association, the body that sets standards for the wholesale gold market. An assay card is the sealed plastic card that holds the bar and certifies its weight and purity. Keep it sealed: an intact card makes the bar easier to sell later. Read more about each refiner in our guides to PAMP Suisse bars and Rand Refinery bars, or about the size itself in our 1 oz gold bar guide.
Money reported in May 2025 that Costco also sold 1 oz gold coins, with a limit of two per transaction. Coins appear less often than bars. Product listings say the item "may be available in your local warehouse, prices may vary", and press photos have shown gold bars on sale in some warehouses, but most members buy online.
What are Costco's rules for buying gold?
Gold is not sold on normal Costco terms. The listings set out these conditions:
| Rule | What Costco says |
|---|---|
| Membership | Members only. Gold Star is $65 a year; Executive is $130 a year. Non-members cannot buy member-only items. |
| Purchase limit | 1 transaction per membership, maximum 4 units per 24 hours |
| Address cap | Precious metals orders to the same address limited to 8 units per day, even across several memberships; orders above this may be cancelled |
| Returns | Non-refundable; not eligible for cancellation, price adjustments or promotions |
| Shipping | Insured FedEx included in the price; estimated 3 to 5 business days |
| Delivery checks | Adult aged 21+ must be present; a scan of US government ID may be required; no redirection to pickup points, warehouses or other addresses |
| Where it will not ship | Alaska, Nevada and Puerto Rico |
| Payment (Costco.com generally) | Visa cards, Mastercard, most PIN-based debit cards and Costco Shop Cards |
The limits have changed several times. FOX Business reported in May 2025 that the bars were limited to 2 units per 24 hours, down from 5 per 24 hours earlier that year. The October 2026 listings allow 4. Costco has not publicly explained these changes, so treat any limit as temporary.
Unlike most bullion dealers, Costco does not offer a cheaper price for paying by bank wire or check. You pay the same price whichever accepted card you use, which is why card rewards matter so much in the comparison below.
How does Costco's gold price compare with spot?
The spot price is the wholesale price of one ounce of gold for immediate delivery. Every retailer charges a premium above it to cover refining, packaging, shipping and profit. Costco's site does not allow automated price checks: the product page would not load in our automated browser on 11 October 2026, so we do not publish a Costco premium.
Press reports give a sense of how Costco has priced its bars. In May 2025, FOX Business quoted the Rand Refinery bar at $3,249.99 and the PAMP Lady Fortuna bar at $3,389.99. Money reported the Rand bar at about $3,250 when spot was around $3,295, which put it slightly below the spot price at that moment. That is unusual for retail gold, and it is part of why bars sold out.
The catch is timing. Dealers reprice every few seconds with the market; Costco's listed price moves less often. When gold is falling, a Costco price can lag above spot, and when gold is rising it can lag below. Check the live price on our gold price today page and compare it with the Costco price on the day you buy.
Costco vs online dealers: which costs less?
For comparison, this is the GoldVetted price check, 10 October 2026, when spot was $4,195.60 an ounce. We did not capture bar prices at dealers, so the comparison uses a single 1 oz American Gold Eagle coin, a product that usually carries a higher premium than a plain 1 oz bar.

How do Costco card rewards change the maths?
Costco's gold listings advertise two separate rewards: 2% cash back with the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi, and the Executive membership's annual 2% reward, which is capped at $1,250 a year. Check each programme's current terms for exclusions before relying on them. Here is the illustration, using the spot price from our check:
- If a Costco bar were priced exactly at spot ($4,195.60), 4% back would be worth about $167.82, making the net cost roughly 4% below spot.
- Buying an Eagle from SD Bullion by wire cost $139.79 over spot in our check, about 3.3%.
- So when Costco prices near spot, a member with both rewards can come out ahead. If Costco's price sits a few percent above spot, the advantage disappears.
The Executive reward cap matters for larger buyers: at 2%, it is reached after $62,500 of purchases in a year across everything you buy at Costco. The $130 membership fee also counts against any saving if you join only for gold. This is an illustration, not a Costco price.
If you want to compare a dealer's live bar prices on the same day, Visit SD Bullion had the lowest Eagle premium in our check, and APMEX is part of the MKS PAMP Group, the company behind PAMP. How do you sell a Costco gold bar later?
This is the part many buyers forget. Costco's listings offer no buy-back, and the bar cannot be returned. To turn it back into cash, you sell it like any other bar:
- Keep the assay card sealed. A PAMP or Rand Refinery bar in its original, undamaged card is easy for a buyer to verify. A bar taken out of its card may need testing, which can lower offers.
- Get two or three quotes. Ask online dealers, a local coin shop and, if you like, a pawn shop for a price as a percentage of spot.
- Compare against spot, not against what you paid. Dealers usually buy 1 oz bars a little below spot. The gap between buying and selling prices is called the spread.
- Keep your Costco receipt. You will need your purchase price to work out any gain for tax.
Gains on physical gold are generally taxed by the IRS as collectibles, at a maximum federal rate of 28% for gold held more than a year. State sales tax rules on buying bullion vary too. See our US gold tax guide, and our guides to selling gold bars and selling gold in the US.
Is buying gold at Costco worth it?
Points in its favour
- Bars from two well-known LBMA Good Delivery refiners
- Price has at times been close to, or even below, spot
- Up to 4% back for members with the Citi card and Executive membership
- Insured shipping included
Points against
- Membership required, and limits of 4 bars per 24 hours
- No returns, no cancellation and no buy-back
- Stock sells out and designs change without notice
- No delivery to Alaska, Nevada or Puerto Rico
- Only 1 oz sizes, so no small gram bars or large bars
Costco can be a sensible place for an existing member to pick up a few 1 oz bars when its price is close to spot. It is not set up for buyers who want choice, larger quantities or someone to sell back to. Whatever you decide, compare the final price with a dealer's on the same day. Frequently asked questions
Does Costco still sell gold bars?
Yes. On 11 October 2026, Costco.com listed 1 oz gold bars from PAMP and Rand Refinery, including the PAMP Lady of Liberty and the PAMP Bald Eagle. Stock comes and goes: the Rand Refinery bar was marked out of stock when we checked. Listings change often, so check costco.com for what is live today.
Do you need a Costco membership to buy gold bars?
Yes. Costco's listing data marks the gold bars as requiring a membership, and Costco says non-members cannot buy member-only items. A Gold Star membership costs $65 a year and an Executive membership $130 a year. Limits are applied per membership, not per person.
How many gold bars can you buy at Costco?
The October 2026 listings allow one transaction per membership, with a maximum of 4 bars per 24 hours. Separately, Costco caps precious metals orders to the same address at 8 units per day across all memberships, and may cancel orders above that. In May 2025 the limit was 2 bars per 24 hours.
Can you return a Costco gold bar?
No. Costco's normal return policy does not apply. Each gold bar listing says the item is non-refundable, not eligible for price adjustments, and cannot be cancelled once ordered. If you change your mind, your only option is to sell the bar to a dealer or coin shop.
Does Costco buy back gold bars?
Costco's listings describe no buy-back service, and the bars cannot be returned. To sell, you would go to an online dealer, a local coin shop or a pawn shop. A PAMP or Rand Refinery bar still sealed in its original assay card is a widely recognized product, which helps when you get quotes.
Is Costco gold cheaper than online dealers?
Sometimes, but not always. In May 2025, Money reported Costco's Rand Refinery bar at about $3,250 when spot was around $3,295. Its prices are set less often than dealers', who update all day. Card rewards of up to 4% can tilt the maths, so compare the final price on the day.
How is a Costco gold bar delivered?
By insured FedEx, with shipping included in the price. Costco estimates 3 to 5 business days. An adult aged 21 or over must sign, and a scan of US government ID may be required. Bars cannot be redirected to a pickup point or warehouse, and delivery is not available to Alaska, Nevada or Puerto Rico.
