Where to buy and sell gold in Calgary

By GoldVetted Editorial TeamLast updated Last fact-checked How we research
Quick answer

Calgary's walk-in option for bullion is Canada Gold, with three stores; its 1 oz Maple Leaf was CA$6,050, 1.68% over spot, on 12 October 2026. Silver Gold Bull was founded in Calgary but sells online. Alberta has no PST, and gold at least 99.5% pure is GST-exempt, so a Maple Leaf carries no sales tax.

Calgary punches above its weight in the Canadian gold trade. One of the country's largest online bullion dealers started here in 2009 and still keeps a vault in the city, yet if you want to walk in and buy a coin today, the choice is narrower than you might expect. This guide sets out the Calgary dealers we could verify from their own sites and the Royal Canadian Mint's dealer list, how their prices compare with delivery from elsewhere, why Alberta is one of the simplest provinces for sales tax, and where to sell. For the full national comparison, see the best places to buy gold in Canada.

Which gold dealers are in Calgary?

The Mint's authorized bullion dealer list names two businesses in Calgary: Canada Gold, with stores on 58th Avenue SW and at South Trail, and Silver Gold Bull, listed at a Calgary mailing address. Canada Gold's own site adds a third store, on 14th Street NW.

Canada Gold is a 19-store chain and Royal Canadian Mint authorized distributor that says customers can walk in with no appointment. Its Alberta stores take a wider range of payments than its Toronto or Quebec stores, though any electronic payment needs a 20% deposit made in store first. You can check stock for each Calgary store on its price page, and you need photo ID at pickup. Its Calgary North store has recently moved, so confirm the address on its site before you go.

Being local helps mainly if you want storage or sell large amounts: Silver Gold Bull says sales over $100,000 can be dropped off at its Calgary vault, and metal already stored there counts as pre-verified when you sell. For a single coin, it is an online dealer like any other, with a 4% discount for e-Transfer, bill payment or wire. Its site does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a premium for it.

Calgary Coin Gallery is a numismatic shop (coins valued for rarity as well as metal) with a storefront and online store. It sells Royal Canadian Mint products and buys collections of all sizes. We did not find standard gold bullion coins or bars in its online shop on 12 October 2026, so it suits collectors and sellers of old coins more than someone after the lowest price per ounce.

Is it cheaper to buy gold in Calgary or have it delivered?

On a 1 oz Maple Leaf, Calgary's walk-in price tied with the cheapest online dealer we checked in Canada. The table compares it with sellers that deliver to Alberta.

Distance is the main cost of buying online from Calgary. The Royal Canadian Mint, for example, quotes 4 to 9 days by Canada Post to major cities outside Ontario for its own online orders, plus two days of processing, and Silver Gold Bull says orders can take up to five business days to pack. A walk-in purchase is in your hand the same day. Online wins on range: bar brands, sizes and silver that a single store may not carry.

Fractional coins cost more per ounce everywhere. At Canada Gold, a 1/2 oz Maple Leaf was CA$3,150, a 5.88% premium, compared with 1.68% on the full ounce.

Is there sales tax on gold in Alberta?

Alberta is one of the easiest provinces for gold buyers. It has no provincial sales tax, and the CRA's rate table lists only the 5% GST. Even that does not apply to investment gold: under the Excise Tax Act, gold bars, ingots, coins and wafers at least 99.5% pure count as "precious metal", and their sale is exempt, as the CRA's Memorandum 17-1 explains.

Sales tax on a CA$6,000 gold purchase: Calgary compared with other cities
ProductCalgary (GST only)Toronto (13% HST)Montreal (GST + QST)
1 oz Maple Leaf or .9999 barCA$0CA$0CA$0
1 oz Krugerrand or Gold Eagle (22 karat)CA$300CA$780about CA$899

Illustrative tax on a CA$6,000 price. Rates from the CRA's GST/HST rate table and, for Quebec, the 9.975% QST. Taxable status follows the 99.5% purity test.

So in Calgary, choosing a 22 karat coin over a Maple Leaf costs you 5%, not the 13% to 15% buyers pay in Ontario or the Atlantic provinces. That narrows the gap, but a Maple Leaf is still tax-free. Profits on sale are a separate question for income tax; our Canadian gold tax guide explains capital gains.

How to stay safe buying gold in Calgary

  • Use dealers you can verify. Start with the Mint's authorized dealer list. Below-spot offers on classified sites are a classic gold scam.
  • Get the per-coin price in writing and check it against the live spot price on this page.
  • Carry ID, not bundles of cash. Canada Gold's Alberta stores take debit, wire and bank draft, and dealers must report cash of CA$10,000 or more.
  • Check what you are handed. Maple Leafs from 2014 onwards carry the Mint's Bullion DNA mark; our guide on how to tell if gold is real covers basic tests.
  • Decide on storage first. Compare a home safe, a bank box and a dealer vault in our gold storage guide.

Gold buying in other Canadian cities

Our other local guides cover buying and selling gold in Toronto, where Gold Stock Canada has a downtown showroom, buying and selling gold in Winnipeg, home to a Royal Canadian Mint boutique, and buying and selling gold in Montreal, where Kitco has its head office.
