50 gram gold bar: price, size and how it compares

By GoldVetted Editorial TeamLast updated Last fact-checked How we research
Quick answer

A 50 gram gold bar holds 1.6075 troy ounces of 99.99% gold, worth the live value below. On 12 October 2026 single 50 g bars cost between 2.48% and 6.19% above their gold value at four dealers in Canada, Australia, the US and the UK. Per gram, that is cheaper than a 10 g bar and close to a 100 g bar.

Fifty grams is the size people often skip. Dealer lists jump from 20 g to 1 oz to 50 g to 100 g, and most buyers look at the two ends. Yet the 50 g bar answers a common question neatly: how do I get a low premium without putting five figures into a single bar? Below are the refiners' own measurements, the live gold value, the prices four dealers charged on the morning of 12 October 2026, and a size-by-size comparison of what you pay per gram.

How big is a 50 gram gold bar?

Roughly the size of a postage stamp and only a few millimetres thick. Most 50 g bars on sale are minted, meaning cut from a rolled strip of gold and stamped with a design, then sealed in a card. Here is what the refiners publish.

The Perth Mint lists maximum dimensions within its manufacturing tolerances. The Royal Mint does not publish thickness. See every weight side by side in our gold bar sizes guide.

The Perth Mint bar is 3.10 mm thick at most, which shows how flat minted bars are. A cast bar, poured into a mould, packs the same gold into a shorter, thicker block. Valcambi makes both versions at 50 g. Our guide to cast vs minted bars explains how they are made.

What is a 50 gram gold bar worth today?

Its gold value is 50 grams times the live spot price, the wholesale market price of gold. Dealers sell above this and buy back below it.

What did 50 gram gold bars cost on 12 October 2026?

Our automated check opened each dealer's product page between 07:32 and 07:35 UTC on Monday 12 October 2026, read the price for one bar at the cheapest payment method shown (usually bank transfer or cheque), and compared it with the gold-api.com spot price at that moment. The premium is the extra you pay above the value of the gold.

Two things stand out. First, the spread between dealers is wide: buying direct from the Royal Mint cost about 3.2 to 3.7 percentage points more than the Perth Mint or Gold Stock Canada charged for the same weight. The Royal Mint's prices include delivery and it offers a 2+ bar price of £5,384.83 for its Britannia bar, but on a single bar a specialist dealer is usually cheaper. Second, at APMEX the cast Valcambi bar was only US$15.75 cheaper than the minted one, so the sealed assay card cost very little extra. Our explainer on gold premiums covers what makes up the difference.

Is a 50 g bar cheaper per gram than other sizes?

Yes than smaller bars, and only slightly dearer than 100 g. The fairest test is the same maker and dealer at different weights, so the table below puts our 12 October figures for each dealer's 10 g, 50 g and 100 g bars side by side and turns them into a price per gram.

Price per gram of gold by bar size, same dealer and range, 12 October 2026

Premium over spot in brackets. The 10 g and 100 g figures come from the same morning's checks published in our 10 gram and 100 gram guides (06:35 to 06:42 UTC), so spot was within a few dollars. Perth Mint 20 g Kangaroo: A$200.24 per gram (3.82%).

The pattern is clear. Going from 10 g to 50 g cut the premium by roughly 2.5 to 3.3 percentage points at every dealer. Going on from 50 g to 100 g saved much less, under 1 point at the Royal Mint and the Perth Mint. At APMEX the step was bigger (1.7 points), so US buyers gain more by going up to 100 g. In practice, 50 g is where most of the size discount has already arrived. For a list that weighs brands as well as sizes, see the best gold bars to buy.

Who is a 50 gram gold bar right for?

Suits

  • Buyers spending roughly the value of one bar at a time who want a lower premium than 10 g or 20 g bars.
  • Anyone building up gradually: four 50 g bars give the same gold as two 100 g bars with more ways to sell part.
  • People who like a sealed, serial-numbered card they can check at home.

Less ideal for

  • Small budgets: a single bar costs over £5,000 or US$7,000 at October 2026 prices.
  • US buyers chasing the lowest cost, since 100 g was noticeably cheaper per gram at APMEX.
  • UK buyers expecting big gains: bars are liable to Capital Gains Tax, while Britannia and Sovereign coins are exempt.

Brands matter for resale more than for price. Bars from LBMA-listed refiners such as PAMP Suisse, Valcambi, the Perth Mint and the Royal Mint are recognised by almost every bullion buyer.

How do you check, store and sell a 50 gram bar?

  1. Check the card. Minted 50 g bars come sealed with a serial number that should match the bar. Do not open the seal if you might sell, as an intact card makes resale easier. See what an assay card is.
  2. Measure it. Compare length and width with the refiner's figures above. A fake can match the weight but rarely the weight and size together. More in how to tell if gold is real.
  3. Store it sensibly. A 50 g bar is small enough for a home safe, but check your contents insurance limit. Options are compared in our gold storage guide.
  4. Know the buyback. On 12 October 2026 Hatton Garden Metals listed a buyback price of £4,880.28 for a 50 g bar, about 4.0% below spot. Its own Best Value 50 g bar was listed at £5,233.58 (2.91% over spot) but was out of stock at the time of our check. Buying at that price and selling straight back would return about 93% of what you paid. See selling gold bars.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 50 gram gold bar worth?

Its gold is worth 50 times the spot price per gram, which is 1.6075 troy ounces, shown live on this page. Dealers charge more than that. On 12 October 2026 we saw single 50 g bars at £5,395.85 (Royal Mint), A$9,920.19 (Perth Mint), C$9,833.77 (Gold Stock Canada) and US$7,074.43 (APMEX).

How many ounces is a 50 gram gold bar?

1.6075 troy ounces. Gold is weighed in troy ounces of 31.1035 g, not the 28.35 g ounce used for food, so a 50 g bar is a little over one and a half troy ounces. The Royal Mint and the Perth Mint both state the gold content of their 50 g bars as 1.608 troy oz.

How big is a 50 g gold bar?

About the size of a postage stamp, two or three millimetres thick. The Royal Mint lists its Britannia 50 g bar at 52.95 x 30.88 mm. The Perth Mint gives maximum dimensions of 47.60 x 27.60 x 3.10 mm for its minted Kangaroo 50 g bar, with a minimum gross weight of 50.000 g.

Is a 50 g gold bar a good size to buy?

It is a middle size. In our check on 12 October 2026 a 50 g bar cost less per gram than a 10 g bar from the same maker at every dealer we compared, but slightly more than a 100 g bar. It suits buyers who want a lower premium than small bars without putting over 10,000 in one item.

Is a 50 gram bar cheaper than two 1 oz bars?

Not directly comparable, because two 1 oz bars hold 62.2 g of gold against 50 g. What matters is price per gram. At the Perth Mint on 12 October 2026 the minted Kangaroo 50 g bar cost A$198.40 per gram, against A$198.83 per gram for its cast 1 oz bar in our 11 October check, so the two were almost level.

Can I sell a 50 gram gold bar back to a dealer?

Yes. 50 g is a standard weight and bullion dealers buy it from known refiners. On 12 October 2026 Hatton Garden Metals listed a buyback price of £4,880.28 for its 50 g bar, about 4% below spot. Keep the card or certificate and your invoice to make selling simpler.
