Who makes Perth Mint bars, and is it LBMA accredited?
The Perth Mint is operated by Gold Corporation, a Western Australian government-owned body. The LBMA Good Delivery list, which names refiners whose bars meet the professional market's standard, lists Gold Corporation (T/A The Perth Mint) in Perth with an accreditation date of 24 January 2003. Its earlier life as an Australian branch of the Royal Mint, London, appears on LBMA's former list.
In March 2023, after ABC reports that bars shipped to China in 2018 to 2021 did not meet the Shanghai Gold Exchange's own tighter specification, LBMA opened an incident review. Kitco reported on 5 April 2023 that LBMA found no zero-tolerance breaches, kept the Perth Mint on the list, required a corrective action plan with third-party checks, and said the quality of its gold was never in question. The Perth Mint published LBMA's confirmation on its own site.

Should you buy a cast or minted Perth Mint bar?
Perth Mint is one of the few brands where you can easily buy a 1oz cast bar. Cast bars have a rustic poured look and no design; minted bars are polished, carry the Kangaroo or Swan, and come sealed. In our check, the new 1oz cast bar actually cost more than a pre-owned minted bar. Read cast vs minted bars for the general rules.
Who are Perth Mint bars best for?
- Australian buyers who want a local, government-owned brand that is GST-free.
- Anyone who prefers a cast bar in small sizes.
- Buyers worldwide who want an LBMA brand recognised by dealers in all four of our markets.
How do you verify and store a Perth Mint bar?
- Check the card: the serial number on a minted bar should match its assay card; the seal should be intact. See what an assay card is.
- Check cast bar stamps: Perth Mint logo, weight, 999.9 and serial number.
- Weigh and measure on accurate scales, and compare the dimensions with the dealer's listing.
- Test anything loose or second-hand. Our guide on telling if gold is real explains the checks.

Frequently asked questions
Who owns the Perth Mint?
The Perth Mint is run by Gold Corporation, which is owned by the Government of Western Australia. LBMA lists it on the Good Delivery list as "Gold Corporation (T/A The Perth Mint)", Perth, Western Australia, with a current accreditation date of 24 January 2003. Its earlier history as a branch of the Royal Mint, London, appears on LBMA's former list.
Is the Perth Mint still LBMA accredited after the doping story?
Yes. In March 2023 LBMA reviewed reports that some Perth Mint bars sent to China between 2018 and 2021 did not meet the Shanghai Gold Exchange's specifications. Kitco reported in April 2023 that LBMA found no zero-tolerance breaches, kept the mint on the list and required a corrective action plan. LBMA said the gold's quality was not in question.
Are Perth Mint cast bars cheaper than minted bars?
Not always in small sizes. In our 11 October 2026 check at Chards, a new 1oz Perth Mint cast bar was 5.05% over spot, while a pre-owned 1oz minted Kangaroo bar was 3.95%. Cast bars tend to win in larger sizes. Compare like for like, including whether the bar is new or pre-owned.
What is the Perth Mint green certicard?
It is the green assay card used on many older Perth Mint minted bars, showing the weight, purity and serial number. Chards and APMEX both listed classic green-card bars in October 2026. Later bars use newer packaging. Keep the bar sealed in its card, because it helps when you sell.
Can I buy gold bars direct from the Perth Mint?
Yes, the Perth Mint sells bullion directly online and from its shop in Perth, and through distributors and dealers worldwide. Australian buyers can compare dealers in our Australian dealer reviews, including our Perth Mint review.
Is there GST on Perth Mint gold bars in Australia?
Investment gold of at least 99.5% purity, in a form traded on the international bullion market, is GST-free in Australia under the ATO's precious metal rules. Perth Mint bars are 99.99% pure, so they normally qualify.
