20 gram gold bar: value, real prices and how it compares

By GoldVetted Editorial TeamLast updated Last fact-checked How we research
Quick answer

A 20 gram gold bar holds 0.643 troy ounces of gold, so its gold value is 20 times the live spot price per gram shown below. Dealers charge more: on 12 October 2026, single 20 g bars cost 3.97% to 7.57% above gold value at four dealers in the UK, US and Australia.

If you are deciding between small bars and the 1 oz bar, the 20 g bar is the size to look at closely. It holds about two thirds of an ounce, and at most dealers its premium is already close to that of a full ounce. In our check it cost under 4% over gold value at the Perth Mint, and only one dealer charged more than 7%. Below are live values, the makers' published measurements, the prices we read on 12 October 2026 and a size-by-size cost comparison.

What is a 20 gram gold bar worth right now?

A bar's gold value is its weight multiplied by the spot price, the live wholesale price of gold. Twenty grams of 99.99% gold is 0.6430 troy ounces:

How big is a 20 gram gold bar, and what does it look like?

Gold is dense, so 20 g fits on a fingertip. The Royal Mint and the Perth Mint publish exact measurements; the dealers' listings for Swiss bars do not.

The Perth Mint's figures are maximums within its manufacturing tolerances; it guarantees a minimum gross weight of 20.000 g. The Royal Mint does not publish thickness. Compare every size in gold bar sizes.

All four are minted bars: cut from a rolled strip of gold, then struck and polished, which gives sharp edges and a design on both faces. The Perth Mint's 20 g bar carries its swan logo, which it describes as a London Bullion Market Association (LBMA) registered mark, and kangaroo motifs on the back. Larger bars are often cast (poured into a mould) instead; cast vs minted bars explains why that matters for price.

What did 20 gram gold bars cost on 12 October 2026?

Our automated check read the single-bar price (quantity one, cheapest payment method) on each dealer's product page between 07:37 and 07:39 UTC on Monday 12 October 2026, then compared it with spot from gold-api.com at the same moment.

Spot used (gold-api.com): £3,164.38 (Royal Mint, 07:37:03 UTC), £3,164.98 and US$4,188.70 (07:37:25 to 07:37:38 UTC), A$5,995.23 (07:38:41 UTC) per troy ounce. Premium = price / (20 g x spot per gram) - 1. Hatton Garden Metals showed its own premium as 5.50%, against its own spot feed. APMEX's card price was US$2,995.62 (11.22%). Two other APMEX 20 g pages (Royal Mint and Perth Mint bars) did not allow our automated check, so we do not publish a premium for them. We did not find a 20 g gold bar listed at the Canadian dealers we checked. Repeat checks: premium tracker.

The spread between dealers (3.97% to 7.57%) is far narrower than for 5 g bars, where the same morning's range was 6.90% to 15.26%. The Royal Mint's Britannia was the most expensive in-stock bar but still cost only £43.70 more than Hatton Garden Metals' best-value bar, which was out of stock and comes from whichever refiner is available. The Royal Mint also cuts its unit price as you buy more, down to £2,159.26 each for 100 or more, which shows how much of a single bar's premium is handling cost.

Is 20 g the sweet spot between small bars and 1 oz?

For many buyers it is close. Here is cost per gram across sizes at three dealers, all captured on 12 October 2026:

Perth Mint Kangaroo minted bars from one full price list read at 06:35 UTC (its 20 g bar was A$4,005.61 then). Royal Mint Britannia and APMEX Valcambi bars, single bar, from our 1 g, 10 g, 5 g, 20 g and 100 g checks the same morning.

Two things stand out. First, the drop from 10 g to 20 g is small at the Royal Mint (about £1 a gram, or £22.61 if you compare one 20 g bar with two 10 g bars), but bigger at the Perth Mint, where the premium fell from 6.27% to 3.91%. Second, past 20 g the gains are slim: at the Perth Mint, moving all the way to 100 g saved only another 1.35 percentage points. Four 5 g Royal Mint bars, by contrast, would have cost £2,317.76, which is £128.99 more than one 20 g bar.

20 g bar or 1 oz bar?

The 1 oz bar is the most traded retail bar size and a little cheaper per gram, but it holds about 55% more gold, so it is a bigger single purchase. If a 1 oz bar is a stretch, a 20 g bar gets you most of its cost advantage. If you can afford a full ounce, the extra weight usually brings the per-gram cost down a little further. A half-ounce bar (15.55 g) sits just below 20 g if you want a slightly smaller step. Our best gold bars to buy guide puts these choices by budget side by side.

Who is a 20 gram gold bar right for?

  • Good fit: buyers who want a low premium without committing to a full ounce.
  • Good fit: people building a holding in steps, who want each step to be a bar they can sell on its own later.
  • Good fit: a substantial gift (a wedding or a milestone birthday), where a sealed national-mint bar looks the part.
  • Less suited: UK buyers who expect large gains, because bars are liable to Capital Gains Tax while Britannia and Sovereign coins are not. See gold coins vs gold bars.

How do you check, store and sell a 20 gram bar?

  1. Leave the seal intact. The card ties the bar to its serial number; read what an assay card is.
  2. Check it against the maker's specification, such as 31.20 x 18.2 mm for the Royal Mint bar. More checks in how to tell if gold is real.
  3. Store it securely and tell your insurer if it pushes you over your valuables limit; see the gold storage guide.
  4. Know the buyback. On 12 October 2026 Hatton Garden Metals offered £1,952.11 for a 20 g bar, 4.08% under spot. Against the Royal Mint's £2,188.77, that is a £236.66 round-trip cost, about 11%. Against Hatton Garden Metals' own selling price it would be £192.96, about 9%. That gap is the dealer spread; see selling gold bars.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a 20 gram gold bar worth?

Its gold is worth 20 times the spot price per gram, or 0.643 troy ounces, shown live on this page in four currencies. A dealer will charge more than that. On 12 October 2026 single 20 g bars cost between 3.97% and 7.57% above their gold value at the four dealers we checked in the UK, US and Australia.

How big is a 20 gram gold bar?

About the size of a large postage stamp. The Royal Mint lists its 20 g Britannia bar at 31.20 mm x 18.2 mm. The Perth Mint gives maximum dimensions of 31.80 mm x 18.80 mm x 2.90 mm for its 20 g Kangaroo minted bar, with a minimum gross weight of 20.000 g.

Is a 20 g bar better value than a 10 g bar?

Slightly. At the Royal Mint on 12 October 2026 the 20 g Britannia cost £109.44 per gram against £110.57 for the 10 g bar, so two 10 g bars would have cost £22.61 more. On the Perth Mint's price list the gap was larger: A$200.28 per gram for 20 g against A$204.83 for 10 g.

Should I buy a 20 g bar or a 1 oz bar?

Is there VAT or GST on a 20 gram gold bar?

Not on 99.99% bars in the UK, Canada or Australia. HMRC treats gold of 995 fineness or more as VAT-free investment gold, and Canada and Australia exempt precious metal of at least 99.5% purity from GST/HST and GST. In the US there is no federal sales tax, but some states charge it on bullion.

What will a dealer pay me for a 20 gram gold bar?

A little under its gold value. On 12 October 2026 Hatton Garden Metals in London showed a buyback price of £1,952.11 for a 20 g bar, about 4% under spot. Bought from the Royal Mint at £2,188.77 that morning and sold straight back, you would recover about 89% of what you paid.
