100 gram gold bar: price, sizes and cast vs minted
A 100 gram gold bar holds 3.215 troy ounces of 99.99% gold, worth the live value shown below. It is one of the cheapest sizes per gram: on 12 October 2026 single 100 g bars cost 0.96% to 5.38% above gold value at five dealers in Canada, Australia, the US and the UK.
The 100 g bar is where many people move from "buying some gold" to holding a serious amount. It costs about as much as a small car, its premium is close to that of much bigger bars, and it is still small enough to sell on its own. It is also the size where you get a real choice between cast and minted bars from the same maker. Below: dimensions from the refiners, live value, the prices we captured on 12 October 2026, cast against minted, and how a 100 g bar compares with three 1 oz bars or a kilo.
How big is a 100 gram gold bar?
Small for its value. A 100 g bar fits easily in the palm. The shape depends on how it is made, so we list each refiner's own published figures.
| Bar | Type | Purity | Dimensions | Minimum gross weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| The Perth Mint 100 g cast bar | Cast | 99.99% | 44.20 x 26.20 x 4.80 mm (maximum) | 100.012 g |
| The Perth Mint Kangaroo 100 g | Minted | 99.99% | 47.60 x 27.60 x 5.40 mm (maximum) | 100.000 g |
| The Royal Mint Britannia 100 g | Minted | 999.9 | 54.6 x 31.6 mm | Not stated |
| The Royal Mint Best Value 100 g | Minted | 999.9 | 55.15 x 32 mm | Not stated |
The Perth Mint gives maximum dimensions within its tolerances. The Royal Mint does not publish thickness. Compare every size in our gold bar sizes guide.
Notice the cast bar is the most compact. Casting pours gold into a small, deep mould, so the bar is thick and short. Minting rolls gold into a thin strip and stamps out a wider, flatter bar with room for a design. Both hold the same gold.

Cast or minted: which 100 g bar is better?
Neither is purer; both are 99.99% gold. The differences are cost, looks and packaging.
| Feature | Cast 100 g | Minted Kangaroo 100 g |
|---|---|---|
| How it is made | Molten gold poured into a mould | Struck from a rolled strip, polished |
| Price | A$19,707.25 | A$19,764.19 |
| Premium | 2.21% | 2.47% |
| Size (maximum) | 44.20 x 26.20 x 4.80 mm | 47.60 x 27.60 x 5.40 mm |
| Finish | Rippled surface, stamped marks | Sharp edges, kangaroo design on reverse |
The cast bar saved A$56.94. Cast bars are usually stamped with a serial number and sold with a certificate rather than sealed in a card; minted bars are sealed in tamper-evident packaging. If you plan to store in a vault, cast is the natural choice. If you want something to inspect at home or sell to a high-street dealer, a sealed minted bar can be simpler. More in cast vs minted bars.
Is a 100 g bar better than three 1 oz bars or one kilo?
A 100 g bar is 3.215 troy ounces, so three 1 oz bars hold slightly less gold (93.3 g). At the Perth Mint on 12 October 2026, its cast 1 oz bar cost A$6,162.81, a 2.76% premium, against 2.21% for the cast 100 g bar. Three 1 oz bars would have cost A$18,488.43 for 93.3 g; the 100 g bar A$19,707.25 for 100 g.
| 3 x 1 oz | 1 x 100 g | 1 x 1 kg | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Premium (typical in our checks) | About 3% | About 1% to 4% | Lowest; see the 1 kg guide |
| Sell part of your gold | Easy | Whole bar only | Hard |
| Dealers who buy it | Almost all | Almost all bullion dealers | Fewer; may test the bar |
| Storage space | Small | Small | Small, but high value in one item |
For many buyers a handful of 100 g bars is a practical middle path: the premium is near kilo-bar levels, yet you can sell one bar at a time. The best gold bars to buy guide puts these sizes side by side with brand choices.
Who is a 100 gram gold bar right for?
- Good fit: buyers putting in a five-figure sum who want a low premium without tying it all up in one kilo bar.
- Good fit: vault storage users, where cast 100 g bars stack neatly and cost least.
- Less ideal: UK buyers expecting large gains. Bars are liable to Capital Gains Tax, while Britannia and Sovereign coins are not.
- Less ideal: anyone who might need to sell small amounts; smaller bars or coins give more flexibility.
How are 100 g gold bars taxed in each country?
| Country | When you buy | When you sell at a gain |
|---|---|---|
| United Kingdom | No VAT (995 fine or more, Notice 701/21) | Capital Gains Tax applies to bars |
| Canada | No GST/HST (99.5% or more, Memorandum 17-1) | Capital gains rules apply |
| Australia | No GST (99.5% or more, GSTR 2003/10) | Capital Gains Tax applies |
| United States | Varies by state | Taxed at collectibles rates federally |

How do you check, store and sell a 100 gram bar?
- Keep the paperwork. Match the serial number on the bar to its certificate or card, and keep the invoice. See what an assay card is.
- Check size and weight against the refiner's figures above. A fake with the right weight rarely has the right dimensions. See how to tell if gold is real.
- Store it properly. At this value, check your insurance limit or consider a vault; compare options in the gold storage guide.
- Know the buyback. On 12 October 2026 Hatton Garden Metals offered £9,760.56 for a 100 g bar, about 4% below spot, in line with the 4.27% discount it listed for all bars from 1 g to 1 kg on 11 October. Bought from that dealer and sold straight back, you would recover about 93% of the price. See selling gold bars.
