This is the spot price scaled up to a kilo: a melt value, not what a dealer charges. If spot is a new term, read what the spot price means. Ounce prices and coin values are on our gold price today in GBP page.

A kilo is where gold stops being a coin purchase and becomes a six-figure decision. At that size, small percentages turn into thousands of pounds, so the useful questions are practical ones: how close to spot can you buy, what will you get back, how does tax treat a bar rather than a coin, and where does something worth a house deposit actually live? This page answers those. Smaller amounts and jewellery by the gram are covered on the gold price per gram (GBP) page.

How do you work out the value of a kilo of gold?

Gold is quoted per troy ounce, which weighs 31.1035 g. Divide 1,000 g by that and you get 32.1507 troy ounces in a kilo. So: kilo value = spot per ounce x 32.1507. The benchmark most UK dealers and banks track is the LBMA Gold Price, set twice a day in London in US dollars, with sterling figures alongside. Our live figure uses a market feed between those auctions, so it can differ by a few pounds from the LBMA number. Learn more about the unit in what is a troy ounce.

A common slip is to use ordinary (kitchen) ounces. A kilo is 35.27 of those, and multiplying spot by 35.27 overstates the value by nearly 10%, close to £10,000 at October 2026 prices.

What do UK dealers charge for a 1kg gold bar?

The difference between spot and the price you pay is the premium. On kilo bars it is the smallest you will find in retail gold, because one bar spreads the dealer's handling costs over 32 ounces. We read the single-bar price on each dealer's product page on Monday 12 October 2026 and compared it with gold-api.com spot at that minute.

Chards and Atkinsons read 10:52 to 10:54 UTC with spot £3,157.27 to £3,157.35 per ounce (gold value £101,509 to £101,511). Royal Mint and Hatton Garden Metals read earlier that morning with spot £3,163.24 (gold value £101,700.65). Premium = price / (32.1507 oz x spot) - 1. Dealer prices move with spot through the day; Chards' listing for the same pre-owned bar showed £101,414.27 a minute before our product-page read. More checks on the premium tracker.

Two things stand out. First, the cheapest bar was second-hand. A pre-owned "dealer's choice" kilo is a bar the dealer has bought back from another customer; the gold is the same 999.9 fine, but you cannot pick the refiner. Second, the headline price is not the whole cost. Chards quoted delivery from £995 for this size, and Atkinsons lists its kilo bar as collection only. If you would collect anyway, the pre-owned bar was about £2,140 cheaper than the Royal Mint's kilo that day. If you need it delivered, add the delivery charge before comparing.

To see the current kilo range, Visit Chards had the lowest price in our check, and the Royal Mint sells its own branded cast bar with vault storage as an option. Our reviews of Chards and Atkinsons Bullion cover delivery and buyback in more detail, and the best places to buy gold in the UK guide compares more dealers.

How is a kilo of gold taxed in the UK?

The tax position is the biggest difference between a kilo bar and the same money in coins.

Here is what that means in money. Suppose a kilo bought at £101,500 is later sold for £121,500, a £20,000 gain. After the £3,000 allowance, a higher-rate taxpayer would owe 24% of £17,000, which is £4,080. The same gain on 32 one-ounce Britannias would be free of Capital Gains Tax, though the coins would have cost more to buy (our 10 October check found Britannias from 2.8% over spot). The £6,000 rule for personal possessions does not help here either, since a kilo is worth far more. Full detail is in our UK gold tax guide.

What will you get back if you sell a kilo bar?

Dealers buy kilo bars at a little under spot. Hatton Garden Metals listed £97,605.58 for a 1kg bar on 11 and 12 October 2026, 4.27% below the spot price it used, and the same percentage it showed for its smaller bars. So the kilo's saving comes almost entirely when you buy, not when you sell. Taking our cheapest buy price that day (£101,516.64) and that buyback, an immediate round trip would have lost about £3,911, or 3.9%, before any delivery cost. The gap between buy and sell prices is explained in dealer spreads.

Keep the certificate, the invoice and any sealed packaging. A buyer paying six figures may want to test a bar that has lost its paperwork, which can slow payment. You also have to sell the whole bar at once, so if you might need part of the money, a few 100g bars or coins give more flexibility. Our guide to selling gold in the UK covers how to get competing quotes.

How do you carry, store and insure a kilo of gold?

  • Collection or insured delivery. Expect to show ID, and expect to arrange collection or a paid, signed-for delivery. Atkinsons limits its kilo bar to collection; Chards quoted from £995 for delivery.
  • Home storage. Most home contents policies cap cover for valuables well below £100,000. Ask your insurer in writing before the bar arrives, and tell as few people as possible.
  • Vault storage. Several dealers offer storage in a professional vault. Chards listed storage for this bar from £42.30 a month on 12 October 2026. Check whether storage is allocated (a specific bar held in your name) and who insures it. Our UK gold storage guide compares options.
  • Pensions and ISAs. A bar you hold yourself cannot sit inside a standard ISA. Gold funds and some vaulted schemes are regulated investments; see gold in a SIPP or ISA and check firms on the FCA register.

Has the price of a kilo changed much over time?

Because the kilo price is spot times 32.1507, it moves exactly with the ounce price, just bigger: a £10 move per ounce shifts a kilo by about £322. Long-run sterling prices, including the effect of the pound against the dollar, are charted in gold price history in GBP. Gold can fall as well as rise, and this page is information, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a kilo of gold worth in pounds today?

Multiply the spot price per troy ounce by 32.1507. The live figure sits at the top of this page. At 10:53 UTC on 12 October 2026 spot was £3,157.27 an ounce, which made a kilo of pure gold worth about £101,509. A dealer will charge you more than that and pay you less when you sell.

Is there VAT on a 1kg gold bar in the UK?

No. HMRC's Notice 701/21 treats gold bars of 995 thousandths purity or more as investment gold, which is exempt from VAT. Standard kilo bars are 999.9 fine, so they qualify. VAT would only apply to gold that does not meet the investment gold rules, such as most jewellery.

Do I pay Capital Gains Tax on a kilo gold bar?

Yes, if your total gains in the tax year exceed the £3,000 allowance. Gold bars are not exempt, unlike Sovereigns and Britannias, which are UK legal tender. From 6 April 2026 gains are taxed at 18% within the basic rate band and 24% above it, according to GOV.UK.

What is the cheapest way to buy a kilo of gold in the UK?

In our 12 October 2026 check, a pre-owned 1kg bar of the dealer's choice at Chards cost £101,516.64, almost exactly spot. New branded bars were 1.38% to 2.13% over. Delivery is extra at some dealers (Chards quoted from £995), so compare the total with delivery or collection included.

How much will a dealer pay me for a 1kg gold bar?

Usually a few percent below spot. Hatton Garden Metals listed £97,605.58 to buy back a kilo bar on 11 and 12 October 2026, 4.27% below the spot price it used. Bars with their certificate and in good condition are the easiest to sell at the full rate.

How heavy and how big is a kilo of gold?

It weighs exactly 1,000 g, about 2.2 lb, but it is small because gold is so dense. The Royal Mint lists its 1kg cast bar at 118 mm by 53 mm, about the footprint of a phone. Most of the weight surprise comes when you first lift it.

Can I hold a kilo bar in an ISA or pension?

Not as a bar kept at home. Physical bullion cannot sit in a standard ISA. Some self-invested pensions (SIPPs) can hold investment-grade bullion in a vault, and gold funds are another route. These are regulated products, so check the firm on the FCA register and read our guide to gold in a SIPP or ISA first.
