Atkinsons Bullion review: is it a good place to buy gold?
Atkinsons Bullion & Coins is a long-running UK online dealer, registered in London and part-owned by NYSE-listed Gold.com. Its CGT-free 1oz gold coin cost 3.59% over spot in our 10 October 2026 check, and it shows a full price ladder down to monster boxes. Delivery is free and cards carry no fee.
Atkinsons is the dealer to look at if you plan to buy more than one coin. Every product page carries a table showing the price per coin at each quantity, from a single coin up to a sealed monster box, so you can see exactly what buying in bulk saves before you commit. Single coins are not the cheapest in the UK, though. This review sets out what we confirmed from Atkinsons' own pages, Companies House, Gold.com's announcements and Trustpilot, and what it costs compared with Chards and The Royal Mint.

Who owns Atkinsons Bullion, and how long has it been trading?
Atkinsons was founded by Paul and Keeley Atkinson and says it has been trading for more than 35 years, starting in jewellery before moving into bullion and coins. The company behind the website is C & C Jewellery Limited, which Companies House lists as an active private company incorporated on 22 March 2004 and classed as an internet retailer. It was called C & C Jewellery Imports Limited until December 2013. Its registered office is in Paul Street, London EC2A, and its latest accounts run to 31 March 2026.
Ownership changed in 2023. The Companies House record shows the two founders as the controlling shareholders until 17 March 2023. Since 24 March 2023 the only listed person with significant control has been Trossachs Holdings Ltd, holding 75% or more of the shares. In the same year Atkinsons began a partnership with Gold.com, the New York Stock Exchange listed precious metals group formerly called A-Mark. In January 2026 Gold.com announced it had bought a further 24.5% of Atkinsons, taking its total ownership to 49.5%. Atkinsons is also the only UK seller of Gold.com's own branded bars.
Atkinsons says it is an Affiliate Member of the London Bullion Market Association and has signed up to the Global Precious Metals Code, the market's conduct standard. Day-to-day contact runs through a Sutton Coldfield PO Box and a Birmingham phone number, and the company says it is opening an office in Edinburgh, with appointments from 19 October.

How much does Atkinsons charge?
Like every dealer, Atkinsons sells at the spot price plus a premium. Our guide to gold premiums explained covers what makes up that mark-up. Here is how a single coin compared on the night of our main UK check:
| Dealer | Coin | Price | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Chards | 1oz Britannia, best value (Minty) | £3,259.95 | 2.80% |
| Atkinsons Bullion | CGT-free UK 1oz coin, best value | £3,285.02 | 3.59% |
| The Royal Mint | 2027 1oz Britannia | £3,397.16 | 7.13% |
| Chards | 2027 Full Sovereign | £777.47 | 4.14% |
| Atkinsons Bullion | 2027 Full Sovereign | £792.65 | 6.18% |
| The Royal Mint | 2027 Sovereign | £807.30 | 8.14% |
Prices captured 21:13 to 21:15 BST on Saturday 10 October 2026, when the gold market was closed. Quantity one. Spot from gold-api.com. Premium = price ÷ value of the fine gold at spot − 1. More on our premium tracker.
The "CGT-free UK 1oz gold coin" is Atkinsons' choice of a Royal Mint 1oz coin with mixed designs and dates, which is why it costs less than a named 2027 Britannia. All such coins are UK legal tender, so the tax treatment is the same whichever design arrives. Our repeat check on 12 October at 07:51 UTC gave the same picture: £3,273.00 (3.59%) for the 1oz coin and £789.88 (6.19%) for a 2027 Sovereign. A single 2027 Half Sovereign was £406.91 (9.27%) that morning.
What does buying in bulk save?
This is where Atkinsons stands out. We read the full price ladders on Monday 12 October 2026 at 08:36 UTC, with spot at £3,156.82:
| Quantity | CGT-free 1oz coin, each | Premium | 2027 Sovereign, each | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 coin | £3,268.61 | 3.54% | £788.74 | 6.13% |
| Tube (10 x 1oz, 25 Sovereigns) | £3,254.21 | 3.09% | £780.54 | 5.03% |
| Monster box (100 x 1oz, 500 Sovereigns) | £3,237.81 | 2.57% | £777.90 | 4.67% |
Prices read from the dealer's product pages. Intermediate tiers (2 to 4, 5 to 9, 20 to 49 and so on) are also shown on each page. Sovereign premium uses 0.23542 oz of fine gold per coin. Atkinsons asks buyers of more than 1,000 Sovereigns to phone for rates.
In plain terms: buying a full monster box of 1oz coins saved £30.80 per coin against buying one, about £3,080 across 100 coins. The Sovereign discount is smaller, £10.84 a coin at monster-box size. Even at a tube of 10, the 1oz coin price was close to the single-coin price we saw at Chards, so for mid-sized orders the gap between the two dealers narrows. Compare like-for-like totals in Atkinsons vs Chards.
Atkinsons also runs a price match aim: it says it will try to match an identical, in-stock product from an authenticated UK seller if you ask before ordering, though it does not guarantee to.
How can you pay Atkinsons?
Cards are the strong point. Its FAQ says you can pay by debit card up to £60,000 or credit card up to £20,000 per order, with no fee, and the same limits apply through Apple Pay and Google Pay. American Express and prepaid cards are refused, and card payments cannot be taken over the phone. Bank transfer has no stated upper limit, and cheques take four working days to clear.
The price is fixed when you complete the order, and the website holds a price for five minutes while you check out. After that you have 48 hours to pay. If your bank caps transfers at £10,000 a day, Atkinsons asks you to tell its sales team so the payment can be spread out.
Delivery, insurance and collection
All UK orders are delivered free and fully insured. The service depends on value:
- Under £250: Royal Mail Tracked 48, usually 2 to 3 working days.
- £250 to £1,000: Royal Mail Tracked 24, usually next day.
- Over £1,000: Royal Mail Special Delivery or UPS, next day, signature needed.
First orders and high-value orders may be split across parcels, and Atkinsons may wait for you to confirm receipt of one parcel before sending the next. It does not deliver outside the UK. You can collect from its showroom by appointment if you pay by bank transfer, at least 24 hours after payment, with photo ID. The showroom holds no stock for walk-in purchases.
Storing gold with Atkinsons (Vaultor)
Vaultor is Atkinsons' storage service. Its pages say metal is held in UK vaults run by Brink's on a fully allocated basis, meaning your items are kept separate from other clients' holdings, and is fully insured. You can see valuations in your online account and sell back without taking delivery.
| Value of gold held | Yearly fee |
|---|---|
| £20,000 to £100,000 | 0.60% + VAT |
| £100,001 to £250,000 | 0.50% + VAT |
| £250,001 to £999,999 | 0.45% + VAT |
| £1,000,000 and over | 0.40% + VAT |
| Minimum charge | £30 + VAT a quarter |
Silver costs 0.90% + VAT at any value. Fees are calculated daily and billed quarterly. Delivery out of the vault costs £29.95 + VAT per parcel up to £30,000, plus £25 + VAT re-vaulting on part withdrawals.
New storage clients buying more than 1oz of gold get six months free, with a charge if they withdraw during that period. The £30 quarterly minimum works out at £120 a year before VAT, so storage only becomes cheap in percentage terms on larger holdings. Our UK gold storage guide compares the main options, and our BullionVault review covers a vault-first alternative.
Can you sell gold back to Atkinsons?
Yes, and the process is mostly online. The Sell to Us pages list what Atkinsons pays for each coin and bar. You add items to a package, confirm the sale, and Atkinsons tells you at checkout whether it can fix the price, which it then holds for two working days provided the parcel reaches it in that time. You print a packing slip and post the items by Royal Mail Special Delivery, and payment is by bank transfer or cheque. Scrap and proof coins are quoted individually.
When we read the buy prices at 08:37 UTC on 12 October 2026 (spot £3,157.20), Atkinsons offered £3,138.34 for a 2014-onwards 1oz Britannia, 0.60% below spot, and £740.52 for a mixed-date Sovereign, 0.37% below the value of its gold. Set against the £3,268.61 single-coin price that morning, buying and immediately selling one 1oz coin would have cost about £130, or 4.0%. That round-trip cost is why gold suits people holding for years. Compare buyers in our guide to selling gold in the UK.
Gains on Britannias, Sovereigns and other UK legal tender gold coins are free of Capital Gains Tax for UK residents (HMRC CG78305). Bars are not. See our UK gold tax guide.
What do customers say about Atkinsons?

Who Atkinsons suits, and who should look elsewhere
Good fit: buyers planning a tube or more of coins who want to see the bulk discount in advance, people who want to pay by card without a surcharge, and anyone who wants to sell back online with a locked price.
Look elsewhere if: you are buying one or two coins and want the lowest premium, or you mainly buy Sovereigns. In our checks Chards was cheaper on single 1oz coins and Hatton Garden Metals on Sovereigns. If you would rather buy straight from the mint, see our Royal Mint review and Royal Mint vs Atkinsons.
