Hatton Garden Metals review: is it a good place to buy gold?
Hatton Garden Metals is a family-run London bullion dealer and gold buyer with a shop in Hatton Garden, trading as a company since 2007. It had the cheapest Sovereign in our 10 October 2026 check (2.81% over spot) and publishes what it pays for every coin and bar, so you can see the full buy-and-sell cost upfront.
Most dealers tell you what they charge. Hatton Garden Metals also tells you, on the same product page, what it would pay to buy the item back today. That single habit makes it the easiest UK dealer to judge on total cost, and it reflects where the firm came from: buying scrap and coins from the jewellery trade in London's gold quarter. This review covers what we verified from its pages, Companies House and Trustpilot, our own dated price checks, and the gaps, including bars that were out of stock when we looked.

Who runs Hatton Garden Metals, and how long has it been trading?
The company is Hatton Garden Metals Limited. Companies House lists it as an active private company incorporated on 14 November 2007 (briefly called Cook Ninety Nine Limited until February 2008), classed under wholesale of metals and retail of second-hand goods. Its registered office is its own shop in Hatton Place, in the heart of London's jewellery quarter. Its accounts to 31 December 2024 are the latest on file.
The firm describes itself as family-run and says its buyers have more than 40 years' experience in the gold trade. It started as a buyer for jewellers, pawnbrokers and casters, and still runs a trade service alongside its retail one. It melts and assays metal on site, with XRF testing. It also says it is an Affiliate Member of the London Bullion Market Association, an official partner of The Royal Mint, a supplier to members of the National Pawnbrokers Association, and approved under the Trading Standards Buy With Confidence scheme. We could not check the LBMA's own member list automatically, so treat the membership as the dealer's statement.
Buying in person is the main difference from online-only dealers. The shop is at Plouviez House on Hatton Place, and the site lists phone hours of 9am to 4pm. Its contact page also mentions branches in Manchester, the Midlands, Yorkshire, Essex and Scotland, and its payment page says cash is paid at its London and Manchester locations. For a wider look at the area's dealers, see our Hatton Garden gold guide and where to buy gold in London.

How much does Hatton Garden Metals charge?
Every dealer charges the spot price plus a premium. Our guide to gold premiums explained covers why small coins carry bigger mark-ups. Hatton Garden Metals' best prices come from its "best value" mixed-year stock: coins from any year, checked for condition, which cost less than the current year's issue but contain exactly the same gold.
| Dealer | Coin | Price | Premium |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hatton Garden Metals | Sovereign, mixed years (out of stock at check) | £767.48 | 2.81% |
| Chards | 2027 Full Sovereign | £777.47 | 4.14% |
| The Royal Mint | 2027 Sovereign | £807.30 | 8.14% |
| Chards | 1oz Britannia, best value (Minty) | £3,259.95 | 2.80% |
| Hatton Garden Metals | 1oz Britannia, best value (post-2012 mixed years) | £3,281.19 | 3.47% |
| The Royal Mint | 2027 1oz Britannia | £3,397.16 | 7.13% |
Prices captured 21:13 to 21:15 BST on Saturday 10 October 2026, when the gold market was closed. Quantity one. Spot from gold-api.com. Premium = price ÷ value of the fine gold at spot − 1; a Sovereign contains 7.3224 g (0.23542 oz) of gold. Full results on our premium tracker.
The Sovereign was back in stock when we checked again on Monday 12 October at 07:51 UTC (spot £3,159.69), at £764.60, 2.79% over spot, still the lowest of the four dealers. The best value Britannia was £3,267.51 (3.41%). Earlier that morning a mixed-year Half Sovereign cost £396.76, 6.54% over spot, cheaper than Chards (7.53%) and The Royal Mint (9.20%). Read our Chards review if 1oz coins are your main purchase, since Chards was cheaper on those.
Gold bars from 1 g to 1 kg
Hatton Garden Metals sells bars across the full size range, including Metalor certified bars bought direct from the Swiss refiner. Small bars cost far more per gram, as this check shows:
| Bar | Price | Premium | Buyback price | Stock at check |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Best value 1 g | £126.86 | 24.78% | £97.61 | Out of stock |
| Best value 10 g | £1,075.89 | 5.76% | £976.06 | Out of stock |
| Best value 100 g | £10,450.94 | 2.76% | £9,760.56 | In stock |
| 1 kg | £103,865.57 | 2.13% | £97,605.58 | Out of stock |
Prices read from product pages on 12 October 2026, with spot between £3,162.16 and £3,164.27 per oz at each read (gold-api.com). Buyback prices from its published bar list, captured 11 October 2026 at 10:56 UTC (spot £3,171.45), 4.27% below spot for each size. On 11 October a Metalor 1oz certified bar cost £3,328.74 (4.96% over spot of £3,171.03).
The lesson is the same at every dealer: a 1 g bar loses about a quarter of its price the moment you buy it, while a 100 g bar costs under 3% over spot. Bars are also not exempt from Capital Gains Tax, unlike Britannias and Sovereigns. Note too how often the popular sizes were out of stock; if you need a particular bar quickly, check availability before planning around it.
What does Hatton Garden Metals pay when you sell?
This is the firm's strongest point. Its selling pages list a buy price for each common coin and bar, updated daily from the London gold price, and every product page shows "buyback price today" next to the selling price. You can sell at the London shop without an appointment or send items by post, and it says it pays the same day, by Faster Payments bank transfer, PayPal, cheque or cash (cash capped at £8,000 per household a year).
| Item | It pays | vs gold value at spot |
|---|---|---|
| 1oz Britannia (24ct) | £3,067.15 | −3.29% |
| 1oz Krugerrand | £3,065.17 | −3.35% |
| Sovereign, mixed years | £720.90 | −3.45% |
| 1oz Britannia, pre-2012 (22ct) | £3,049.37 | −3.85% |
| Half Sovereign | £356.73 | −4.44% |
| 1oz gold bar | £3,035.53 | −4.29% |
| Scrap 9ct, per gram | £32.03 | −16.2% |
| Scrap 18ct, per gram | £64.05 | −16.2% |
| Scrap 22ct, per gram | £78.23 | −16.3% |
| Scrap 24ct, per gram | £85.40 | −16.2% |
GoldVetted automated check of the dealer's published buy lists, captured on a Sunday when the gold market was closed. 14ct scrap was £49.96 a gram. Prices move daily; get a live quote before you sell.
Putting the two sides together gives the true cost of owning gold here. Buying a Sovereign for £767.48 and selling it back for £720.90 would have cost £46.58, or 6.07%. For a Britannia, £3,281.19 in and £3,067.15 out is a loss of £214.04, or 6.52%. Gold has to rise by that much before you break even, which is why it suits long-term holders. Gains on Britannias and Sovereigns are free of Capital Gains Tax for UK residents (HMRC CG78305). See our UK gold tax guide.
Payment, delivery and collection
Product pages promise free, fully insured delivery on every order in discreet packaging, normally by Royal Mail Special Delivery the next working day. Orders under £200 excluding VAT go by Royal Mail Tracked 24 and may take one to three days. You can also collect from the London shop.
On payment, bank transfer is the main route, and the site says same-day transfers usually clear the same day. Its payment page says UK debit and credit cards are accepted online for orders up to £10,000, but a later line on the same page says it does not accept credit cards, so expect to use a debit card and check at checkout. In the shop, debit cards are taken by chip and PIN up to £10,000 with photo ID. Cash is accepted at the shop up to £8,000 per household in a rolling 12 months, with ID and proof of address.
Storing gold with Hatton Garden Metals
Hatton Garden Metals stores metal itself. Its storage page says items are held fully allocated, meaning the exact bar or coin you bought is the one kept for you, in a Grade 6 Chubb safe within a Grade 10 vault, and fully insured.
| Value held | Annual fee | Monthly fee |
|---|---|---|
| Under £20,000 | £120.00 | £10.00 |
| £20,000+ | From £130.00 | From £10.83 |
| £50,000+ | From £325.00 | From £27.08 |
| £100,000+ | From £650.00 | From £54.17 |
| £150,000+ | From £975.00 | From £81.25 |
The bands work out at 0.65% a year of the value held. A £15 administration fee applies. A first gold order over £2,500 gets three months free storage. Posting items out of storage starts at £9.95 for parcels up to £20,000 and 5 kg.
Holding gold with the same small company that sold it to you is convenient, but it puts more weight on that one firm than storage with an independent vault operator. Weigh the options in our UK gold storage guide and our BullionVault review.
What do customers say about Hatton Garden Metals?
We do not publish testimonials or invent ratings. This is what Trustpilot showed on 12 October 2026:
| Measure | Figure shown |
|---|---|
| TrustScore | 4.9 out of 5 ("Excellent") |
| Total reviews | 7,883 |
| 5-star share | 96% |
| 1-star share | Under 1% |
Many of its reviews come from people selling gold rather than buying it, which is worth bearing in mind if you are judging it mainly as a place to buy bullion.

Cons
- Popular coins and bars often out of stock in our checks
- Card payments capped at £10,000; credit card policy unclear

Who Hatton Garden Metals suits, and who should look elsewhere
Good fit: Sovereign buyers who want the lowest premium, anyone who wants to see the sell-back price before buying, Londoners who prefer to buy or sell face to face, and people selling scrap or coins who want a published price and same-day payment.
Look elsewhere if: you want a specific bar size right now and it is out of stock, you want to pay large sums by credit card, or you prefer storage with an independent vault company. For the reassurance of buying from the mint itself, see our Royal Mint review, though its premiums were roughly three times higher in our check.
