People look up the value of a kilo of gold for different reasons: pricing a large purchase, checking a figure from the news, or working out what an inherited bar is worth. Canada has a particular angle on this size. The Royal Canadian Mint makes its own kilo bar, the big banks sell it, and online dealers compete hard on price. This page compares them, explains the tax position and covers the practical side of owning something worth close to C$200,000. Grams and karat jewellery are on the gold price per gram (CAD) page.

How is the kilo price of gold calculated?

Gold trades by the troy ounce, which is 31.1035 grams. A kilogram therefore holds 32.1507 troy ounces, and the formula is simply spot per ounce x 32.1507. Most of the world's prices start from the LBMA Gold Price, set in London in US dollars; Canadian figures depend on that and on the loonie's exchange rate. That is why the CAD kilo price can rise on a day when gold is flat in US dollars, if the Canadian dollar weakens.

Watch out for ordinary ounces. A kilo is 35.27 avoirdupois ounces (the kind on a kitchen scale), and using that number instead of 32.15 inflates the value by almost 10%, around C$18,000 at October 2026 prices.

What do Canadian dealers and banks charge for a 1 kg bar?

Every seller adds a premium to the gold value. On a kilo it is small in percentage terms but runs to thousands of dollars, so the choice of seller matters. We read the price for one bar on each product page on Monday 12 October 2026 (Canadian Thanksgiving; online prices were still updating) and compared it with gold-api.com spot at that moment.

What makes the Royal Canadian Mint kilo bar different?

The Mint describes its updated 1 kg bar, as quoted on TD's listing, as accepted by precious metal exchanges around the world, with stylised maple leaf marks and a serial number framed by engraved lines borrowed from the Maple Leaf coin design. TD gives its size as 50.5 by 110.3 by 9.5 mm and its gold content as 32.15075 troy ounces at 99.99% purity. A recognised Canadian brand can make resale to Canadian dealers straightforward, but you pay more for it than for a dealer's-choice bar. More on the Mint itself in our Royal Canadian Mint guide.

A worked example: a kilo bought for C$193,000 and sold for C$213,000 gives a C$20,000 gain. Half of it, C$10,000, is added to your income for the year and taxed at your marginal rate. Full detail, including provincial differences, is in our Canadian gold tax guide.

What paperwork comes with buying a kilo?

Dealers in precious metals that buy or sell C$10,000 or more fall under FINTRAC, Canada's financial intelligence agency. They must verify identity for certain transactions and report cash payments of C$10,000 or more. In practice, at kilo size you should expect ID checks whichever way you pay. Bullion Mart's payment policy, for instance, says orders over C$10,000 may need two pieces of government ID, a utility bill and a signed enhanced due diligence form, plus a copy of the wire if you pay that way. Splitting a cash purchase to stay under a threshold does not avoid the rules.

How should you store and insure a kilo bar?

  • At home. Most home insurance policies set a low limit for bullion and cash. Ask your insurer in writing how much it will cover and what proof it needs before the bar arrives.
  • Safe deposit box. Banks rent boxes, but contents are not covered by deposit insurance, so you still need your own cover.
  • Bank or dealer storage. TD sells a version of the same Royal Canadian Mint kilo bar for its own secure storage, and several dealers offer vaulting. Check whether storage is allocated (a specific bar held in your name), the yearly fee and how you get the bar back. Compare options in the gold storage guide.
  • Registered plans. See gold in an RRSP or TFSA before assuming a bar can go in one.

How do you sell a kilo of gold in Canada?

Dealers buy kilo bars at a little below spot. A well-known bar such as a Royal Canadian Mint kilo, with its serial number intact and its paperwork, is the simplest to sell; an unbranded bar may need testing first. You must sell the whole bar, so if you might need part of the money, smaller bars or Maple Leafs are more flexible. Get two or three bids on the same morning; our guide to selling gold in Canada shows how.

Has the kilo price moved much over time?

The kilo price is spot times 32.1507, so it follows the ounce price exactly, just magnified: a C$10 move per ounce shifts a kilo by about C$322. For the long view, including the effect of the Canadian dollar, see gold price history in CAD. Gold can fall as well as rise, and this page is information, not financial advice.

Frequently asked questions

How much is a kilo of gold worth in Canadian dollars?

Take the spot price per troy ounce in CAD and multiply by 32.1507. The live result is at the top of this page. At 10:59 UTC on 12 October 2026, spot was C$5,956.87 an ounce, so one kilogram of pure gold was worth about C$191,518. Dealers sell kilo bars for a little more and buy them back for a little less.

Is there GST or HST on a 1 kg gold bar?

No, as long as the bar is at least 99.5% pure gold, which standard kilo bars (99.99%) are. The Excise Tax Act treats such bars as precious metal and a financial instrument, so their sale is exempt from GST/HST, as CRA explains in GST/HST Memorandum 17-1. Gold jewellery and most collector coins are taxable.

Where is the cheapest place to buy a kilo of gold in Canada?

In our 12 October 2026 check, Gold Stock Canada's 1 kilo bar (refiner of its choice, paid by wire) was lowest at C$193,027.54, 0.60% over spot. Bullion Mart's Royal Canadian Mint kilo was 1.39% over and TD's was 2.65% over when paid from a TD account. Prices change through the day.

How big is a Royal Canadian Mint 1 kg gold bar?

TD Precious Metals lists the current Royal Canadian Mint kilo bar at 50.5 mm by 110.3 mm by 9.5 mm, with 32.15075 troy ounces of 99.99% gold. That is roughly the size of a smartphone, but it weighs about 2.2 pounds, which surprises most people the first time they hold one.

Will I need ID to buy a kilo of gold in Canada?

Expect to. Dealers in precious metals that buy or sell C$10,000 or more must follow FINTRAC rules, including verifying identity for certain transactions and reporting cash of C$10,000 or more. Bullion Mart, for example, says orders over C$10,000 may require two IDs, a utility bill and a signed form.

Do I pay tax when I sell a kilo of gold in Canada?

Usually, yes, on the gain. For most individual investors half of a capital gain is added to taxable income; the planned increase in that inclusion rate was cancelled in 2025. If you trade gold often, CRA may treat profits as business income instead, which is fully taxable.

Can I put a kilo gold bar in my RRSP or TFSA?

Not by keeping it at home. Investment-grade bullion can count as a qualified investment for registered plans, but it has to be held through a plan administrator that offers it. Few do, and fees vary. Our guide to gold in an RRSP or TFSA explains the options and their trade-offs.
