Australia is one of the few countries where a kilo of gold is an everyday retail product. The Perth Mint casts one, ABC Bullion and Ainslie make their own, and dealers in Brisbane, Sydney and Melbourne price them live alongside 1oz coins. That makes it easy to see what you would pay. Less obvious are the extras: freight for something worth nearly A$200,000, insurance, and what you get back when you sell. This page covers all of it. Grams and carat jewellery are on the gold price per gram (AUD) page.
How is the price of a kilo of gold worked out?
Gold is priced by the troy ounce of 31.1035 g, so a kilogram is 32.1507 troy ounces. The kilo value is spot per ounce x 32.1507. Global prices start from the LBMA Gold Price, set in London in US dollars; the Australian price also depends on the exchange rate, so a falling Aussie dollar can lift the local kilo price even when gold is flat in US terms. Australia is a major gold producer, but that does not make local prices lower: dealers price off the same world market.
Don't use ordinary ounces. A kilo is 35.27 of those, and using that figure instead of 32.15 overstates the value by almost 10%, close to A$19,000 at October 2026 prices.

Premium = price / (32.1507 oz x spot) - 1. Jaggards' lower price applies to bank transfer and cash; its higher price is the standard (card) price, 4.19% to 4.24% over spot. Ainslie's site showed a spot of A$5,992.63, higher than our feed, so its prices may lag spot slightly; against that figure, its Perth Mint kilo was 1.97% over. The four dealer prices sat within A$474 of each other, so for a bank transfer the choice of brand mattered more than the choice of dealer. Paying by card at Jaggards added about A$3,450. Compared with the Perth Mint's own cast bars, the kilo is not dramatically cheaper per gram: the Mint's 10oz cast bar was 2.07% over spot on its own site that morning. The kilo's appeal is more about storing one serial-numbered bar than about a big saving.
To see today's prices, Visit Ainslie Bullion had the lowest kilo price in our check, and Jaggards lists both ABC and Perth Mint kilos with a separate bank transfer price. Our reviews of Ainslie and Jaggards, and the guide to the best places to buy gold in Australia, compare more dealers.
Why buy the Perth Mint kilo through a dealer?
Mainly speed and price visibility. The Mint's own listing was a special order with no online price, while Ainslie, a Perth Mint distributor, quoted the same cast bar live. The Perth Mint bar has maximum dimensions of 112 x 52 x 9 mm and comes with an assay certificate matching its serial number. How is a kilo of gold taxed in Australia?
| When | Rule | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Buying | No GST | Gold of at least 99.5% fineness in investment form is precious metal under GSTR 2003/10. Dealers' pages note the bar "does not attract GST". |
| Selling after 12 months or more | CGT, 50% discount | Individuals include half the gain in assessable income |
| Selling within 12 months | Full CGT | The whole gain is included |
| Held in an SMSF | One-third discount | After 12 months; the fund owns and stores the bar |

An example: a kilo bought for A$196,500 and sold two years later for A$216,500 gives a A$20,000 gain. With the 50% discount, A$10,000 is added to your income for that year and taxed at your marginal rate. More detail is in our Australian gold tax guide, and the rules for super funds are in gold in an SMSF.
What paperwork and payment rules apply to a kilo?
From 1 July 2026, businesses that buy or sell precious metals for cash (or virtual assets) of A$10,000 or more provide a designated service regulated by AUSTRAC, Australia's financial crime regulator. Expect identity checks at kilo size, and expect cash of A$10,000 or more to be reported. Splitting a payment to avoid reporting is an offence. Most buyers pay by bank transfer, which is also the cheapest option at dealers that publish a separate card price.
How do you get a kilo bar home, and where do you keep it?
- Freight is not automatic. Jaggards says parcels are insured only up to A$50,000 at checkout, and asks kilo buyers to contact it to arrange cover. Ainslie says a kilo exceeds the insurable value of its normal freight and asks buyers to call to discuss options. Collecting in person is the simple alternative.
- Home storage. Check your contents policy: many cap bullion and cash at a low figure. Get the insurer's answer in writing.
- Vaulting. Jaggards advertised private vaulting from A$265 a year on its kilo pages. Ask whether storage is allocated (a specific bar in your name) and who insures it. Our gold storage guide compares options.
What will you get back when you sell a kilo?
Ainslie's buyback estimator showed A$188.81 per gram of gold on 12 October 2026. Scaled to a kilo, that is about A$188,810, roughly 1.8% under our spot reading; Ainslie says the final price is set after the bullion is received and tested. Bought from Ainslie at A$196,561.10 for its own bar and sold back straight away at that estimate, a kilo would have lost about A$7,750, or 3.9%. That round-trip cost is why gold suits longer holding periods. You must also sell the whole bar at once. See selling gold in Australia for how to compare bids.
Has the kilo price moved much over time?
The kilo price is spot times 32.1507, so it tracks the ounce price exactly, just larger: an A$10 move per ounce changes a kilo by about A$322. Frequently asked questions
How much is a kilo of gold worth in Australia today?

Is there GST on a 1kg gold bar in Australia?
No. Under the ATO's ruling GSTR 2003/10, gold of at least 99.5% fineness in an investment form is precious metal, and its first supply after refining and later sales between dealers and buyers are GST-free or input taxed. Standard kilo bars are 99.99% gold. Jewellery and most collector coins do attract GST.
Can I buy a 1kg gold bar direct from the Perth Mint?
Yes, but it is a special order. On 12 October 2026 the Perth Mint's online shop listed its 1 kilo cast bar with no price shown and dispatch of up to four weeks. Dealers such as Ainslie and Jaggards list the same Perth Mint bar with a live price; Jaggards said stock would be available in two to four weeks.
What do dealers charge for a kilo of gold in Australia?
In our 12 October 2026 check, Ainslie's Perth Mint 1kg bar was A$196,461.10 (2.20% over spot) and its own Ainslie 1kg bar A$196,561.10 (2.25%). Jaggards charged A$196,844.80 for an ABC Bullion kilo and A$196,934.80 for a Perth Mint kilo by bank transfer, or about A$3,450 more by card.

Do I pay capital gains tax on a gold bar in Australia?
Yes. Gold bullion is a CGT asset, so a gain on sale is added to your assessable income. If you held the bar for at least 12 months, individuals can usually apply the 50% CGT discount, so only half the gain is taxed. SMSFs get a one-third discount instead.
How big is a Perth Mint 1kg gold bar?
The Perth Mint gives maximum dimensions of 112 x 52 x 9 mm for its 1 kilo cast bar, with a minimum gross weight of 1,000.010 g. That is about the size of a phone, and it is stamped with the swan logo, weight, purity and a serial number that matches its assay certificate.
