Most Americans never handle a kilo of gold, but plenty of people search for its value: some are pricing a large purchase, some are curious about central bank or news figures, and some have inherited a big bar. A kilo is also the size where the gap between spot and what you pay gets small enough to matter in percentage terms but large in dollars. This page covers the kilo specifically. Gram-sized amounts and karat jewelry are on our gold price per gram (USD) page.
How many ounces are in a kilo of gold?
One kilogram is 1,000 grams. Gold is priced by the troy ounce of 31.1035 grams, so a kilo is 32.1507 troy ounces. That is the number to multiply by. The table shows how a kilo converts into the other units you will meet.
| Unit | Amount in 1 kg | Used for |
|---|---|---|
| Troy ounces | 32.1507 | Spot price and all bullion pricing |
| Regular (avoirdupois) ounces | 35.274 | Kitchen and postal scales; never for gold prices |
| Pounds (avoirdupois) | 2.2046 | Shipping weight |
| Troy pounds (12 troy oz) | 2.6792 | Rarely used today |
| Pennyweights | 643.01 | Some jewelers and scrap buyers |
Calculated from the NIST definitions: 1 troy ounce = 31.1034768 g, 1 avoirdupois ounce = 28.349523 g. Background in what is a troy ounce.
The classic mistake is to multiply the gold price by 35.27 (regular ounces) instead of 32.15. On a kilo that overstates the value by about 9.7%, more than $13,000 at current prices. If someone quotes you a kilo value, check which ounce they used.

Investment kilo bars are almost always .9999 or .999 fine. Older bars can be .995, the minimum for most exchange-traded bars. A kilo of jewelry or scrap is worth far less because much of its weight is other metal. The table multiplies the live kilo price by each purity.

What does a 1 kilo gold bar cost from a dealer compared with melt?
No dealer sells at spot. The extra you pay is the premium. For kilo bars it is small as a percentage, because the cost of casting, assaying (testing purity) and shipping one bar is spread across 32 ounces. We read the single-bar price on two dealer product pages at about 06:27 to 06:36 UTC on Monday 12 October 2026, with gold-api.com spot at $4,183.30 an ounce. That put the gold in a kilo bar at $134,496.22.
| Dealer and bar | Wire or check | Over melt | Card or PayPal | Over melt |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| SD Bullion, 1 kilo bar (design our choice) | $136,755.66 | 1.68% | $142,453.81 | 5.92% |
| APMEX, 1 kilo bar (various mints, pre-sale) | $138,707.64 | 3.13% | $144,487.12 | 7.43% |
| APMEX, Perth Mint 1 kilo cast bar | $139,983.99 | 4.08% | $145,816.65 | 8.42% |
Premium = price / (32.1507 oz x spot) - 1. APMEX listed its various-mints bar as a pre-sale with an expected ship date of 23 October 2026. JM Bullion does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a figure for it. More dates on our premium tracker.
In dollars, the cheapest wire price was $2,259 over melt, or about $70 per ounce. Compare that with a single 1 oz American Gold Eagle, which cost $139.79 over spot at the same dealer in our 10 October check. Per ounce, the kilo bar cost about half as much over spot. The card surcharge works the other way: on a kilo bar it added roughly $5,700 to $5,800, so almost everyone buying this size pays by wire.
One thing to watch: each dealer shows its own spot ticker, and on the morning we checked both were about $10 to $20 higher than our gold-api.com feed. A dealer's "per ounce over spot" figure is measured against its own ticker, so it can look smaller than the premium in our table. Always compare the final price you pay with the live kilo value at the top of this page.
To compare current kilo bar prices yourself, Visit SD Bullion had the lowest wire price in our check, and APMEX listed the widest range of branded kilo bars. Our guide to the best places to buy gold in the US covers more dealers.
Branded or "dealer's choice": does it matter?
A "design our choice" or "various mints" bar is the cheapest because you get whatever accredited bar the dealer has in stock, often a secondary-market bar (one bought back from another customer). The gold content is the same. A named bar, such as the Perth Mint cast bar above, costs more but comes with a known serial number and assay certificate, which some buyers find easier to resell. The differences between poured and stamped bars are explained in cast vs minted gold bars.
How big is a 1 kilo gold bar?
Gold is about 19 times as dense as water, so a kilo is surprisingly small. A PAMP 1 kg cast bar measures 116 mm long, 51 mm wide and 8.67 mm thick, roughly 4.6 by 2.0 by 0.34 inches. Other refiners' bars vary in shape, but each weighs exactly 1,000 g and is stamped with the refiner's mark, the weight, the purity and a serial number. It fits in a hand, but it weighs 2.2 pounds, which surprises most people the first time they lift one. See all standard sizes in gold bar sizes.
What paperwork and payment rules apply when buying a kilo?
- Payment by wire is normal. Dealers price wire and check payments lowest, as the table shows. Large card payments carry the biggest surcharge.
- Cash triggers Form 8300. The IRS requires a business that receives more than $10,000 in cash in one transaction, or related transactions, to file Form 8300 within 15 days. In a sale of collectibles, which the IRS says includes coins and metal, "cash" can also include cashier's checks, bank drafts and money orders of $10,000 or less. Wire transfers and personal checks are not cash for this rule (IRS Form 8300 reference guide). Splitting a cash payment to stay under $10,000 does not avoid the rule.
- State sales tax varies. Many states exempt bullion, some only above a dollar amount, and a few tax it. On a $135,000 purchase the difference is large, so check our US gold tax guide before ordering.
- Delivery. Expect insured shipping that needs a signature. Check the dealer's own shipping page for its limits and insurance terms before ordering.
How should you store and insure a kilo bar?
A kilo bar packs a lot of value into a small object, so where it lives matters. Before keeping a bar at home, ask your insurer in writing how much bullion, if any, your homeowners' or renters' policy covers. The main options are a home safe with insurance arranged for the bar, a bank safe deposit box (the contents are not covered by FDIC deposit insurance, so you would still need your own cover), or a private depository that stores bullion on an allocated basis, meaning a specific bar is set aside in your name. The trade-offs, including yearly fees, are in our gold storage guide.
Can a kilo bar go in a gold IRA?
Yes, if it is at least 99.5% pure. Under 26 US Code 408(m), bullion that meets the fineness needed for futures delivery is exempt from the IRA collectibles rule, provided a bank or approved trustee holds it. Taking the bar home yourself would be treated as a distribution.
How do you sell a kilo of gold, and what is reported?
Bullion dealers buy kilo bars close to spot, often a little below. A bar from a well-known refiner in its original packaging is the easiest to sell. A bar with no recognizable mark, or one with damage, may need testing before a dealer will pay full value, which takes time and can cost money.
| Rule | What it means for a kilo bar |
|---|---|
| Form 1099-B (dealer files) | Gold bars of .995 or finer totaling 1 kilo (32.15 troy oz) or more are on the reportable items list, so a single kilo sale is normally reported |
| Federal tax on gains | Collectibles rate, up to 28% if held over a year; ordinary income rates if held a year or less (IRS Topic 409) |
| Form 8300 (if paid in cash) | Applies to businesses receiving cash; a dealer paying you by wire or check does not trigger it |
1099-B threshold from the reportable items list published by APMEX, which notes that rules can change. Not tax advice.
Because a 1099-B threshold sits at exactly one kilo, some sellers ask whether selling smaller bars avoids reporting. The tax is owed on the gain either way, so the reporting rule does not change what you owe. More detail on getting a fair bid is in how to sell gold bars and selling gold in the US.
Has the price of a kilo changed much over time?
The kilo price is the ounce price times 32.1507, so it moves exactly in line with spot. Small daily moves look big at this size: a $10 change per ounce moves a kilo by about $322. Frequently asked questions
How much is a kilo of gold worth today?
A kilo of pure gold is worth the troy ounce spot price multiplied by 32.1507. The live figure is at the top of this page. At 06:28 UTC on 12 October 2026, spot was $4,183.30 an ounce, so a kilo was worth about $134,496 at spot. A dealer's price for a 1 kg bar is higher than that.
How many ounces are in a kilo of gold?
32.1507 troy ounces, the unit used for gold prices. If you weigh a kilo on a kitchen scale set to regular ounces it shows about 35.27 oz, because a regular ounce (28.35 g) is lighter than a troy ounce (31.1035 g). Always multiply the gold price by 32.15, not 35.27.
How much does a 1 kilo gold bar cost from a dealer?
On 12 October 2026 we read $136,755.66 for a 1 kg bar (design of the dealer's choice) at SD Bullion and $138,707.64 for a various-mints kilo at APMEX, both paying by wire. That was 1.68% and 3.13% over spot. Paying by card cost about $5,700 to $5,800 more per bar.
Do I have to fill out paperwork to buy a kilo of gold?
Not for a normal wire or check purchase. Dealers must file IRS Form 8300 if they receive more than $10,000 in cash, which can include cashier's checks or money orders of $10,000 or less in a sale of collectibles such as coins or metal. Wire transfers and personal checks are not cash for this rule.
Is selling a kilo of gold reported to the IRS?
Usually, yes. Dealers file Form 1099-B when a customer sells gold bars of at least .995 fineness totaling one kilo (32.15 troy oz) or more, according to the reportable items list APMEX publishes. Profit on gold held over a year is taxed at the collectibles rate, up to 28% federally.
Can a kilo gold bar go in a gold IRA?
A 1 kg bar of at least 99.5% purity can be held in a self-directed IRA, because 26 US Code 408(m) exempts bullion that meets futures-delivery fineness, as long as a bank or approved trustee holds it. Keeping the bar at home would count as a taxable distribution.
How big is a 1 kilo gold bar?
Smaller than most people expect, because gold is very dense. A PAMP 1 kg cast bar measures 116 mm by 51 mm by 8.67 mm (about 4.6 by 2.0 by 0.34 inches), according to the bar's listing at BullionStar. Bars from other refiners differ slightly in shape but all weigh exactly 1,000 g.
