Costco vs online dealers: which is better?

By GoldVetted Editorial TeamLast updated Last fact-checked How we research
Quick answer

Choose Costco if you are already a member, want a few 1 oz PAMP or Rand Refinery bars and can earn up to 4% back with its Citi card and Executive reward. Choose APMEX, SD Bullion or JM Bullion if you want more than 4 bars a day, other sizes, vault storage or someone to sell back to.

Costco turned gold bars into a shopping-cart item, and that raises a fair question: is a warehouse club a better place to buy gold than a specialist dealer? The answer depends less on headline price than on rules. Costco limits what you can buy, refuses returns and will not buy the bar back. Dealers sell almost anything and buy it back, but charge more if you pay by card. Here is how they compare, using Costco's own listings and our reviews of each dealer.

Costco details from its product pages, 11 October 2026. Dealer prices from the GoldVetted price check, 10 October 2026 (spot $4,195.60). Dealer policies from our APMEX, SD Bullion and JM Bullion reviews.

Is Costco gold cheaper than APMEX?

We cannot give a like-for-like answer, and it is worth saying why. Costco's site does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a Costco premium (the markup over the spot price). JM Bullion's site does not allow automated price checks either. What we do have is a same-evening check on the same coin at two dealers:

1 oz American Gold Eagle (BU, random year), single coin, October 10, 2026 (spot $4,195.60)
SellerWire or checkPremiumCardPremium
SD Bullion$4,335.393.33%$4,516.037.64%
APMEX$4,424.295.45%$4,608.649.84%
JM BullionNot shown: its site does not allow automated price checks
CostcoNot shown: its site does not allow automated price checks

GoldVetted price check, 10 October 2026, market closed. Spot from gold-api.com. Premium = price / (fine gold oz x spot) - 1. A Gold Eagle coin usually carries a higher premium than a plain 1 oz bar, so these figures are a yardstick, not a bar price. See the premium tracker.

Press coverage shows how Costco has priced in the past. In May 2025 FOX Business quoted the Rand Refinery bar at $3,249.99, and Money reported it at about $3,250 when spot was around $3,295, slightly below spot. Costco's price moves less often than a dealer's, which updates through the day, so it can sit below spot when gold is rising and above it when gold is falling.

How much can card rewards be worth?

Costco's gold listings advertise 2% cash back with the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi and a separate 2% annual reward for Executive members (capped at $1,250 a year). Using our check as a yardstick, here is the highest Costco price per ounce at which a member would match SD Bullion's $4,335.39 wire price on the Eagle:

Break-even Costco price per ounce vs SD Bullion's wire price (illustration, spot $4,195.60)
Rewards you earnBreak-even Costco priceOver spot
None$4,335.393.3%
2% (Citi card only)$4,423.875.4%
4% (Citi card plus Executive reward)$4,516.037.6%

Our arithmetic: break-even = $4,335.39 / (1 - reward rate). Ignores the membership fee and assumes rewards apply to gold; check both programs' current terms. Not a Costco price.

The fee matters for a one-off buyer. If you join as an Executive member only for gold, the $130 fee wipes out the 4% reward on the first $3,250 of purchases, which is less than one 1 oz bar at today's prices. And the Executive reward cap is reached after $62,500 of spending a year across everything you buy at Costco.

What are the buying rules at each?

Costco's limits are tight and change often. The October 2026 listings allow one transaction per membership and a maximum of 4 bars per 24 hours, with orders to the same address capped at 8 units a day across memberships. FOX Business reported a limit of 2 bars in May 2025. Bars are non-refundable, cannot be canceled and are not eligible for price adjustments. Costco.com takes Visa cards, Mastercard, most PIN-based debit cards and Costco Shop Cards, and there is no discount for paying by bank transfer.

Dealers have no daily bar limit, but they shape orders through payment rules. All three give about 4% off for wire or check, so a card costs about 4.17% more. SD Bullion caps cards at $5,000 and PayPal at $500, will not take a wire under $2,500 and requires one over $20,000. A locked dealer price is binding too: miss the payment deadline and you can owe market losses (SD Bullion adds a 5% fee).

How does delivery differ?

Costco ships by insured FedEx with shipping included, estimating 3 to 5 business days. An adult aged 21 or over must sign, a scan of US government ID may be required, and parcels cannot be redirected to a pickup point or warehouse. Costco does not deliver gold to Alaska, Nevada or Puerto Rico.

The dealers ship free over $199. APMEX says a signature is optional unless you add one at checkout. SD Bullion's insurance does not apply if anyone other than the addressee signs or if the parcel goes to a mailbox store. JM Bullion's insurance ends once a signature or delivery confirmation is obtained. Whichever you use, be home to sign.

Who will buy the bar back?

This is the biggest practical gap. Costco does not buy back gold and will not take a return, so a Costco bar is sold like any other bar: to a dealer, a coin shop or a pawn shop. APMEX quotes on request and sends a prepaid, insured label. SD Bullion posts indicative buy prices and pays within 1 to 3 business days after processing. JM Bullion runs a Sell to Us service. A sealed PAMP or Rand Refinery assay card (the plastic card certifying weight and purity) helps any buyer verify the bar. Compare quotes against spot, and read how to sell gold bars and our local coin shop vs online comparison. Gains on gold held over a year are generally taxed as collectibles at up to 28%; see our US gold tax guide.

Frequently asked questions

Is Costco gold cheaper than APMEX?

Sometimes. Costco's site does not allow automated price checks, so we do not publish a Costco premium. APMEX charged $4,424.29 by wire for a 1 oz Gold Eagle on October 10, 2026 (5.45% over spot). In May 2025, press reports put a Costco Rand Refinery bar slightly below spot. With up to 4% back on rewards, Costco can win when its price is near spot.

Do you need a Costco membership to buy gold?

Yes. The gold bars are member-only items. A Gold Star membership costs $65 a year and an Executive membership $130 a year. APMEX, SD Bullion and JM Bullion need no membership: anyone with a US address can open an account and order.

How much gold can you buy at Costco?

Costco's October 2026 listings allow one transaction per membership, up to 4 bars per 24 hours, and cap precious metals orders to one address at 8 units a day across all memberships. Online dealers set limits by payment method instead, for example SD Bullion caps cards at $5,000 per order and requires wire over $20,000.

Can you return gold bought at Costco?

No. Costco's gold listings say the bars are non-refundable, cannot be canceled and are not eligible for price adjustments, so the usual Costco return policy does not apply. Online dealers also treat a locked price as binding, and may charge market losses or fees if you cancel.

Does Costco buy back gold bars?

No. Costco offers no buy-back. To sell a Costco bar you go to a dealer or coin shop. APMEX, SD Bullion and JM Bullion all run sell-back services, and SD Bullion posts indicative buy prices online. Keep the assay card sealed, as it makes the bar easier to sell. See selling gold bars.

Which credit card gets the best deal on Costco gold?

Costco's listings advertise 2% cash back with the Costco Anywhere Visa Card by Citi and a separate 2% annual reward for Executive members, capped at $1,250 a year. Online dealers charge more for cards: APMEX, SD Bullion and JM Bullion all price card payments about 4% higher than wire or check.

Does Costco store gold for you?

No. Costco ships the bar to your home by insured FedEx, and storage is up to you. APMEX offers vault storage through Citadel at 0.55% a year with a $15 monthly minimum, and SD Bullion through SD Depository at 0.29% a year with a $9.99 monthly minimum. See our US gold storage guide.
