Gold Kangaroo (Nugget): specifications, value and where to buy
The gold Kangaroo, first issued as the Australian Nugget in 1986, is The Perth Mint's bullion coin. The 1oz coin is 99.99% gold, has an A$100 face value and gets a new kangaroo design each year. It is GST-free in Australia. On 11 October 2026, Ainslie Bullion sold one at 3.78% over spot.
Most bullion coins keep one design for decades. The Perth Mint's Kangaroo does the opposite: the 1 oz and smaller coins get a fresh kangaroo scene every year, while the purity stays fixed at 99.99%. The series began in 1986 as the Australian Nugget, and the 2026 coin carries a "40" privy mark to celebrate that anniversary. Below are The Perth Mint's specifications, the live gold value, an Australian dealer price and the tax position in four countries.

How much do Australian dealers charge for a Kangaroo?
The premium is what a dealer charges above the gold value. On Sunday 11 October 2026, with the market closed and spot at A$6,012.71 an ounce, our automated check read Ainslie Bullion's single-coin prices for the 1oz Kangaroo.
| Product | Price | Over spot |
|---|---|---|
| 1oz Gold Kangaroo, various years | A$6,240.24 | 3.78% |
| 1oz Gold Kangaroo, 2026 | A$6,245.24 | 3.87% |
Premium = price / (1 oz x spot) - 1. Spot from gold-api.com (XAU/AUD). Prices shown on Ainslie Bullion's site on 11 October 2026; payment method surcharges not included. More dates: premium tracker.
The current-year coin cost only A$5 more than a mixed-year coin, a much smaller gap than we saw for the Britannia in the UK, where a new 2027 coin cost about 4 percentage points more than older years. We did not capture Kangaroo prices in other countries for this check, so we do not quote a premium for them. To weigh coins against bars, see gold coins vs gold bars.

How is the gold Kangaroo taxed in Australia, the US, UK and Canada?
| Country | When you buy | When you sell at a gain | Retirement accounts |
|---|---|---|---|
| Australia | GST-free 99.5%+ (GSTR 2003/10) | Capital Gains Tax applies | Not covered here |
| United States | Varies by state | Collectibles rate, up to 28% federally if held over a year | Meets IRA fineness 99.5%+ bullion, 26 USC 408(m) |
| United Kingdom | No VAT Investment gold coin | CGT applies Non-sterling currency (CG78305) | Not applicable |
| Canada | GST/HST exempt 99.5%+ (Memorandum 17-1) | Capital gains rules apply | Not covered here |
Australia. The ATO's GST ruling GSTR 2003/10 defines precious metal as gold of at least 99.5% fineness in an investment form, and no GST is charged when a dealer sells it to you. The Kangaroo qualifies, so there is no 10% GST on top of the dealer's price. A 22 carat coin such as the Krugerrand does not qualify. Gains on sale are subject to Capital Gains Tax. Full details in our Australia gold tax guide.
United States. The Kangaroo's 99.99% purity is above the 99.5% bullion threshold in 26 USC 408(m), so it can be held in a gold IRA by the trustee, provided the custodian accepts it.
United Kingdom and Canada. In the UK the coin is VAT free but not CGT-free, because it is not sterling. In Canada, its purity makes it GST/HST exempt, just like the Maple Leaf.
Which years and designs of the Kangaroo exist?
| Period | What happened |
|---|---|
| 1986 | Launched as the Australian Nugget, with real gold nuggets on the reverse |
| 1987 | Famous nugget designs such as the Welcome Stranger (1 oz) and Hand of Faith (1/2 oz) |
| 1989 | Kangaroo designs introduced; the coins become known as gold Kangaroos |
| 1991 to 1992 | 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg sizes added, with face values reset in 1992 |
| 2026 | "40" privy mark for the 40th anniversary of the Nugget; King Charles III effigy |

Because the design changes each year, some buyers collect one Kangaroo per year. For pure bullion buying, the year makes little difference: every 1 oz coin holds the same ounce of gold, and "various years" coins are usually the cheapest. The Perth Mint also issues the Perth Mint Lunar series, which follows the Chinese zodiac and usually costs more.
How do you spot a fake gold Kangaroo?
- Look for the micro-laser letter: modern bullion Kangaroos carry a tiny laser-engraved letter on the reverse, which you need a loupe or magnifying glass to see.
- Weigh it: the 2026 1oz coin has a minimum gross weight of 31.107 g.
- Measure it: up to 32.60 mm across and 2.95 mm thick. Tungsten-core fakes struggle to match both weight and size.
- Check the design for the year: each year has its own design, so compare the coin with The Perth Mint's image for that date. A design that does not match the year is a red flag.
- Test it: XRF (an X-ray scan of the surface metal) or ultrasonic testing at a dealer does not damage the coin.

Where can you buy Perth Mint Kangaroos?
In Australia you can buy direct from The Perth Mint or from dealers such as Ainslie Bullion, ABC Bullion and Jaggards. Our Australia gold buying guide compares the main options. In the US, APMEX stocks Kangaroos, and in the UK they are sold by dealers including BullionByPost, though UK buyers lose out on CGT compared with a Britannia.

Frequently asked questions
How much gold is in a Perth Mint Kangaroo?
The 1oz coin contains 1.000 troy ounce of 99.99% pure gold, with a minimum gross weight of 31.107 g, according to The Perth Mint. The series also comes in 1/20, 1/10, 1/4 and 1/2 oz sizes, plus large 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg coins. Every size is 24 carat gold.
What is the difference between the Kangaroo and the Nugget?
They are the same series. The Perth Mint launched it in 1986 as the Australian Nugget, with gold nuggets on the reverse. From 1989 the design switched to kangaroos, and the coins became known as gold Kangaroos. Many dealers still use both names. The 2026 coin carries a "40" privy mark for the Nugget's 40th anniversary.
How much does a 1oz gold Kangaroo cost in Australia?
On 11 October 2026, with spot at A$6,012.71 an ounce, Ainslie Bullion listed a 1oz Kangaroo (various years) at A$6,240.24, which is 3.78% over the gold value. A 2026-dated coin was listed at A$6,245.24 on the same day. Live gold value is shown on this page.
Do you pay GST on gold Kangaroos?
No. Under the ATO's ruling GSTR 2003/10, gold of at least 99.5% purity in an investment form is precious metal, and no GST is charged when you buy it from a dealer. The 99.99% Kangaroo qualifies. Selling at a profit can still create a capital gain for tax purposes. See Australia gold tax rules.
Is the gold Kangaroo IRA eligible?
It meets the purity test. 26 US Code 408(m) allows gold bullion at least as fine as futures delivery requires (99.5%) to be held in an IRA by the trustee, and the Kangaroo is 99.99%. It is not one of the named US coins, so check that your custodian accepts it. Coins must be kept in an approved depository.
Does the Kangaroo design change every year?
For the 1 oz and smaller coins, yes: a new kangaroo design is issued each year. The 2026 design by Neil Hollis shows two kangaroos leaping across water. The large 2 oz, 10 oz and 1 kg coins have kept the same red kangaroo design for many years. Gold content does not change with the design.
Is the gold Kangaroo free of UK Capital Gains Tax?
No. It is VAT free in the UK as an investment gold coin, but HMRC treats non-sterling currency coins as chargeable assets (CG78305). Gains count towards Capital Gains Tax. UK buyers wanting CGT-free gold usually choose the Britannia or Sovereign.
